Just guessing that you're using the "network connector" ... since you shouldn't need a browser for setup with the other kinds.

If that's the case, the first question is whether the computer is set up to be networked. Even if it's just one computer and one printer, you normally would want at least an ethernet "bridge" or a router between them to keep track of which is talking and which one should be listening - even if only one talks.

To use the network connection, the printer has to have an address, and the computer has to know what the address is. Most such printers can print a "test page" that will tell you what the current printer address is. Common methods are to press and hold a button until something blinks, or to hold a button down while the printer is turned on.

If you enter the printer's address, something like 1.192.168.100, into your browser, it should connect. Printer setup is then sort of like an "editable web page." A common problem is failing to save the page before exiting.

It the friends setup is really simple, it might be preferable to use a different input (serial/parallel/USB?) so that the browser isn't involved in the setup.

Thanks John, but no... :-)

It's a usb direct connection to the single printer - not the N version, the stupid bloody "Winprinter" that I got conned into as it was going VERY cheap and assured...!

OK - found a useful PPD file and got that linked in.

Now it needs a 'wrapper' which I am trying to handle with ''foo'(had to get gcc and do a 'make' of foo (something apparently didn't go right) .... etc) ... and I just discovered that I moved the files into 'root' and forgot to let them be readable here, so I CAN'T LOOK THEM UP AND TELL YOU MORE NOW.... AAAGGGHHHH!!!!

:-) - Aaaaaa'll be back later...

I'm not gonna be much help to you with the Fedora part of it. I've used just enough "network" printers - recently enough to remember some of the common indigestions, but it's been much too long since I've had a new hat of any kind for me to comment there.

I found lots of ads for the printer selling cheap with a quicky web glance. If it's not completely obsolescent I'd have thought that Samsung would maybe have drivers and such on their web site, but for anything but generic Windows it's hard to look with expectations of great success without knowing all the details of the systems involved.

I followed the instructions - then realised that perhaps I should have set it up from root, so transferred the files there and repeated. SELinux keeps telling me things I cannot understand in detail to fix... :-)

Linux has become so secure that I can't install SW anymore it appears...
