Al - if I'm not gigging that night, I'll gladly give my support - you can wear it after me...

Incidentally, can you PM me with Colin Butcher's email address or telephone number? There's a bluegrass get-together in Charlwood, and my gnat's brain has forgotten the date and venue. :-)

Break a leg, mate.

I don't suppose anything ever came of the long discussion we had on here about Cecil Sharp House. Silly question.

'Gargling with salt water useful in these situations'. The mind boggles....

Gosh, I hope the throat is better soon, Alan. We could try some of Harveys Imperial Russian Stout on it - guaranteed to remove all just about any infection and small tree roots as well.

Hi Alan
At the mo I'm trying to decide whether to skip the joys of singing in Mozart's Requiem in Guildford Cathedral or come down and barrack from the back in reciprocation for the other week :-)

Just need to get myself organised. If I don't make it - hope it goes well. If I do - I'll find out!!

nswer :

This is an educated guess. Sore throats are sore due to inflammation. Usually, the inflammation is due to a viral or bacterial infection. (The common cold and strep throat are examples of each.) However, sore throat may also be related to allergies or physical injury to the throat. In each case, an inflammatory response has been triggered. Pain, swelling and an itchy or irritated sensation are the common symptoms of this inflammatory response.
The medical term for swelling is "edema." As part of the inflammatory response, there is an increase in the water content of the involved tissues. With respect to sore throat, a sense of fullness and difficulty swallowing are both related to edema of the tissue lining the throat (called mucosa).

Water tends to follow salt. Anyone who has ever salted a snail knows what happens to the snail. Here's a less disgusting analogy: Have you ever salted slices of raw eggplant? The salt draws moisture from the eggplant. After a few minutes, you can see beads of fluid on the surface of the eggplant.

Everyone has a different recipe for a saltwater gargle, but all recipes tend to be fairly salty. If the gargle has a higher salt concentration than your cells' salt concentration, it will tend to draw out some of the edema fluid from the mucosa of the throat. This will make SOME of your "sore throat" symptoms better. The relief is very real, but also tends to be short-lived, since the gargle has done nothing to remove the cause of the sore throat.

In some cases, gargling with saltwater also has a cleansing action. If you are suffering from postnasal drainage due to a bacterial sinus infection or allergies, the mucus that drains from your nasal cavity is full of chemicals that tend to promote an inflammatory response. As this stuff drains down the back of your throat, it leaves a trail of inflamed tissues in its wake. Frequent gargling with saltwater will help minimize this problem.

As with everything else in medicine, you can certainly overdo this one! Make the gargle salty enough, and you will dry out the mucosa of the throat. This could lead to even greater irritation than what you started with. My advice: The gargle should taste a little salty, but not overwhelmingly so. Begin with one teaspoon of salt per pint of water. Once the salt has dissolved, taste it. If it tastes like spit, add a bit more salt until it begins to taste salty.

Well here I am back from hospital where I have been since Thursday.
Whatever I have is growing in a laboratory but it is some form of Fungal infection (possibly yeast)
I have had an operation but luckily nowhere near my vocal chords but I am a bit croaky.
Thanks to all and Dick for your advice.

Hallo Will
I went in with what I suspected was a fish bone stuck in my throat, under x ray it did not appear and was dismissed by the hospital, overnight it got worse, so I went back the next day. They took me in straight away,I had to wait a day for an exploratory operation which took place yesterday and found nothing,My sore throat was nothing compared to what I woke up with and what I have now.
Penny Silling Penny Silling where for art thou ?
It would be lovely to see you Irene if you can make it even if you do barrack.
I will let everyone know if things change but it will take a lot for me to miss this one.

Thanks Valmai.
It would appear that I have a yeast fungus throat infection and the more I read about it the more I am amazed that the symptoms were not recognised immediately. It would appear that nearly all the population carry this infection, male and females ,which can be triggered by being run down,an offshoot of taking steroids,a possible after effect from taking penicillin, inhalers and the list goes on.It is fairly common in babies and females and is known as thrush. This was not sexually transmitted I hasten to add (we are just good friends).I should start the proper treatment today.

Valmai I have only once met a femail drinker that could down a pint of
King and Barns Ale in about six seconds. She was the daughter of Mr King of K&B who we affectionately called "Daisy". Like you a real character,
eventually married a Broadwood Morris Man.We all talk about Daisy with affection,a kiss from Daisy was a memorable experience.Broadwood used to do a dance where the dancers could only be revived by a ladies kiss and Daisy somehow always got the job.

Ummm ...well, the first time the Lewes Arms held a yard of ale competition I did win it, but not in later years.

The Angel of Death escaped from Glyndebourne, possibly by flight, so might be well qualified to do a floor spot; we haven't asked, though. A member of last week's audience identified it as having been part of a Russian opera based on an original idea by Pushkin and assured us that it's female. Hard to tell, but she hasn't got brow ridges so he could be right.

My ears and whiskers, you can't go round looking up angel's skirts without getting a bit of a reputation. This one is so skeletal that its nether regions wouldn't offer much clue; the robes are pretty equivocal, too.

The pub management isn't certain about this, but a bit of Googling leads me to the tentative theory that the opera was probably the 1992 production of Tchaikovsky's 'Pique Dame' (The Queen of Spades). There is a video of it in circulation.

Just be grateful it's only angels' skirts I'm looking up. Anyway, I've got the reputation - just need a bit of angel action to confirm it.

As to the production, I'm sure the production design will be in the Glyndebourne archive. I was tempted to contact Julia Aries, the archivist, but had a sudden thought that the Angel might be an illegal immigrant, without ticket-of-leave from the opera house... didn't want to give the game away... :-)

I like to imagine that the Angel did what some of the LPO used to do in the Long Interval - nip into Lewes for a pint and a bag of fish and chips. This resulted in chaps in evening dress in the games room of the Lewes Arms uttering cries of 'Reeds against the brass, gentlemen?' by the dart board.

Some of the stage crew used to live in the Elephant & Castle during the season; the Angel may simply have followed them home.
