I was trying to find a decent recording of some traditional english nursery rhymes as I hate all the cheesy pop versions! I was in dr barnardos in Brixton today where there was this old fashioned car ride, you know the ones where you put money in the slot and it sways from side to side? There were these buttons that had nursery rhyme pictures and when you pressed them, played different songs. My one year old son loved it and insisted on having six goes! Anyway, I couldn't believe my ears when one of the songs...Jack and Jill was being sung by Martin carthy!! Did an internet search when I got home and found it was from a recording called 70 golden nursery rhymes which looks exactly what I'm looking for....folk artists singing many of the songs...but I can't find where to buy it. Any ideas? I'm sure its been deleted...but I would love to try and get hold of a copy!! Emmie |

So my help is limited to encouraging you to keep looking - it was in a different league to most nursery music. |

Two good new discoveries there to send me off on another tangent, but no nursery rhymes cd....surely there should be people out there who would love to buy this cd and are also sick of the awful poppy cheesy nursery rhymes that are usually played....drives me insane. |

I can remember in the 1970s when Listen with Mother included the singing of Peta Webb and Alison MacMorland, but I doubt whether there are any existing recordings of that. And then there are the Bagpuss songs - not exactly nursery rhymes, but often tradtional-based, and charmingly sung by Sandra Kerr and others. You're right, it's worth making an effort to get away from the affected pop-style that pervades so many recordings now. Children respond to folk music very intuitively, it doesn't have to be "funky" and over-orchestrated. Marje |

It had six nursery rhymes and one of them was your dad singing with a fiddle player ( hmmm wonder who that could be although it didn't sound like himself), Say hello to your dad from Emmie ;-) and say he has to re-release the recording please, please as there are people out there who would love to listen to it again!! My son Oscar really liked it and he usually only likes arabic drumming because thats mainly what he heard in the womb :-) I was doing a lot of belly dancing at the time! I got the broadside bands nursery rhymes today and they are very nice ....really enjoyed hearing the verse about Jill laughing at Jacks plaster and her mum saying don't laugh at Jacks disaster as had never heard that one before! Also been listening to Sandra Kerrs playsongs which is very sweet. Rolyh, I'm going to contact you next time my son gives me a chance..also have bid on the ebay video even though I don't have a video recorder so I can atleast see it! ( no one else is allowed to bid against me mind :-) |

It's not nursey rhymes but the sort of folk songs people of my generation = pretty old now, used to sing at junior school. There are 11 tracks: Early one morning; Cockles and Mussels; Lavenders Blue; Way down Rio; The Minstrel Boy; Oh dear, what can the matter be; Highland Laddie; The Ash Grove; Oh, no John; John Peel; The Skye Boat Song. There has just been another copy on eBay but no longer. Luckily I already had a copy. The same combination also did an LP of Christmas carols, called Yule Tracks. |

Its really charming and easy on the ear. My son really enjoyed watching the puppets. I was watching it again last night by myself when my son was in bed and was sure that was Martin Carthy dressed as Aitken drum with a hat made of cream cheese and a coat made of good roast beef doing a merry jig and twanging on a ladle! Priceless!! |

It features Isla St Clair, Floella Benjamin, Mike Berry, Martin Carthy and Valentine Dyall. It is acted out by real people, and one bit has the Bampton Morris Men on it! It has each nursery rhyme as a "page" in a story book. It was pure luck - my mom, who knew nothing about traditional music and had never heard of Martin Carthy, just happened to give it to me as a present sometime around 1994 when my son was little. My two and a half-year old asks for it all the time. Fantastic to hear such musical versions of the nursery favourites with a hark back to the historical roots of each one. There's still no sign of a DVD release but some kind person has uploaded the entire original video to YouTube and I've stuck them all together in a handy little playlist. Saydisc also released a more specialised CD Children's Singing Games. If you are looking for something similar to the Broadside Band CD, there's the songbook and CD Sing Hey Diddle Diddle published by A & C Black where you can hear Vivien Ellis and Kevin Graal singing traditional nursery rhymes accompanied by Missak Takoushian on the classical guitar. (I prefer the singing of Vivian Ellis personally). You also might be very lucky if you can get hold of a VHS video called Singing Games for Children arranged and produced by Simon Nicol (of Fairport Convention - just in case you didn't know). Up until fairly recently you could get the DVD from Folk in Education (Toypost) but apparently they no longer have it. I have asked if they could make it available again but sadly I've had no reply. That said, they do still have quite a lot of very interesting folkmusic teaching materials for children. The other VHS video the children like a lot is The Grand Old Duke of York and other favourite nursery play rhymes - again it might still be available somewhere. Jacqui McShee (you don't need me to tell you which group she was in) has recorded with Ulrich Maske two CDs for children for a German record company called Jumbo - they are The Cat and the Fiddle and the second one - The Frog and the Mouse. Barefoot Books brought out a first edition of Playtime Rhymes for Little People with a CD arranged by Dave Townsend, with Paul Downes Charles Spicer and Caroline Butler and another one called Mother Goose Remembers. Lastly there's Hot Peas & Barley-O -Children's Songs & Games from Scotland compiled by Susan Brumfield. |
