Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar?

I think we have a clear run at March.

My diary is blank both 22nd and 29th (although lecturing both Mondays).

I know of nothing at Kings Arms Upnor, nor Good Intent Strood, nor Crayford Arms Crayford on either weekend.

Is there football or other big screen sport worth avoiding on either Sunday?

I'll check with the landlord but am tempted to go for the 29th -we can all be grumpy having lost an hour's sleep to the start of European Summer Time...

Does anyone know of any local clashes before I go firm on a date?

I can't make the 22nd. as I'm stewarding at Oxford Folk Festival. It's very likely that I'll be able to come on the 29th.

Well, us 1954 definitioners call it "Mothering Sunday" and refuse to use the modern, commercial, American nomenclature.

I suppose no-one here knows if there are major amounts of moronball on the 52 inch plasma screen on the 29th? I'll check that with the pub.

21 Feb 09 - 09:29 AM (#2572426)
Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar?
From: VirginiaTam

In UK, Ireland and Nigeria Mothering Sunday falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent. A throwback to 16th century tradition of returning to mother church, later the Victorian practice of permitting girls working as domestics to go home and visit their families.

A "Mother's Day" of some sort is practiced in most cultures and recognised officially in many countries. The 2nd of May event which RB denigrated above as an American invention, happens to be celebratred by dozens of cultures and countires. All of which have the same sentiment at heart, which is to honour one's mother.

The two dates are annoying to me, as I have to remember to pick up a Mothering Sunday card in March and then remember to send it in May. Involves too flipping much remembering.

It is the nomenclature "Mother's Day" that is American modern. THe correct name "Mothering SUnday" has been part of CofE nomenclature for centuries as has the religious festival so named.

I refuse to accept stuff for Father's Day" - an invention of the greetings card industry.

The first observance of Father's Day is believed to have been held in July 5 1908 a church in Fairmont, West Virginia, by Dr. Robert Webb of West Virginia at the Central United Methodist Church of Fairmont.

Mrs. John B. Dodd of Washington thought independently of the holiday one Sunday in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in church, and she arranged a tribute for her father in June 19, 1910. She was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance.

In the 1860s, companies like Marcus Ward & Co, Goodall and Charles Bennett (neither of them American companies) began the mass production of greeting cards. Hallmark (known as Hall Brothers) was founded in 1910 and sold only Christmas and Valentines cards. These were already being mass produced in England by Marcus Ward, etc.

I don't like the greeting card companies and they way they capitalise on any and every thing they can. But why bash American companies for being enterprising when the English were doing it first?

hey Pete - read pun induced grrrooooaaaann here

I have been playing Richard's mandolin all afternoon. Arrrggghhhh! I hate the A chord and don't like the sound of the 2 finger A chord. Been learning fingerstyle Boil That Cabbage Down and Cripple Creek. I am still rubbish at the thing.

Amazingly, I haven't had this little darling out of the case for some time and only the 1st E string was a tiny bit out of tune. What a charmer.

Started learning Sail Away Ladies and Midnight Special on the guitar.

So now I am pretty comfy with House of the Rising Sun, Erie Canal, Grey Funnel Line and Ride On. I love being able to play again.

Senor Caballo Muerto

I have already discovered that the private rheumatology clinic in Chelmsford is manned by the same monkeys which do the NHS clinic. My care would be no different, except I would be seen more often, for longer and get to pay for the priviledge.

The problem is they have not monitored the meds or mitigating conditions as the NICE guidance indicates they should. What I can do now I have found the NICE guidance is tell them their job. At least prevent them from killing me, if not improve my care.

re capo - Shouldn't that be instrument's hat?

Pierre. It is not what RB says or how he says it. It is those stern "headteacher not happy" glances, that make me go over all self-conscious. Especially when I harmonise on sing along songs. Hell! Hi Tam.
Re Mandolin. firstly Im concentrating on two fingered chords. making sure I am using the the correct fingers in regards to 1.2.3.4. I then want to get this chord par-larva worked out.
For instance
If one plays in C, you are actually playing in G.
And if one is playing in Gm you are actually playing A flat minor?

I thought you only got a A flat minor if one dropped a Piano down a Mine shaft.

And I am not certain if any thing I have wrote here is correct so do not take any notice of this because I do not want to confuse you . hence my haste to get it sorted.
The songs I am working on which was you original question are

Blow the man down.
Drunken Sailor.
Over the Hills and far away.
Maid of Amsterdam,
Bedlam boys.

These can all can be played using the two fingered chords
C and G7. but the last 2 songs above sound better with a F thrown in and that is a sod of a chord to get right.

I have a lot to learn but the fact the Mandolin is now near perfect I look at it has money well spent and that I can now crack on with it.

Pete, where are the free online lessons that you did?

I'm pussyfooting around with my Mandolin as well!!!! I'm going to try the ones you are working on when I get home tonight.

Perhaps all three of us should get together at each session and just find a quiet spot and chat to each other and chivvy each other along.

Mine is a lovely Crafter that Mr Bridge bought on my behalf, and Graham, who plays Banjo for my morris side, did the setup on it - so I DO want to get to grips with it if I can.

I think that learning to play is a bit like going to the gym - if you go with someone, you egg each other on to do better - if you go on your own, you start of with good intentions, but end up in the sauna or jacuuzzi ----- just like learning to play!!!

At this rate, we could have a couple or three brace of Mandolins at each session :-))

Pete- I second Kev's question. Where are the online lessons?

Kev- Good idea re practice and pushing each other. I will be leagues behind you guys, because I am so smitten with the new guitar it is difficult to divide my time.

The danger is the mandos may dominate the sessions. Wonder if RB would be willing to provide some mando tuition half hour or so prior to or after sessions?

One problem with our trio - We have the head (chapeau) and feet (clogs) covered. What exactly is my function?

Don't answer that!

Ok May I suggest you start with the D it fairly simple and I found it easy with the Plectrum.
When you have mastered it to a certain extent you can have some real fun doing mandolin lead .

by adding some backing with guitars in the same Key of D.
This has helped me no end today.

Im Giving all my secrets away here.

Let me know when you are ready for the guitar backing site. You wont find it.But once you are on it its so simple and its dead safe I have been on it all day and I am going back on it now.

Hardly ever worth playing G7 on a mandolin (0021) play G major (023).

But you don't want me to teach you mandolin, you want someone like Cliff Bayliss.

The pintatonic scale deserves its own thread. We could have a pintatonic scale festival.

All kinds of activities, including:

A new way to play water glasses. Pint glasses filled to variying levels with different Ales. Which Ales would be on the upper end of the scale? Which on the lower?

Drink to the note - Whenever a muso with comparable Ale in his/her glass hears matching Ale note played he/she must drink to the note.

Any other ideas?

I did not get enough sleep last night.

I seem to remember that John Barden has a song about the pintatonic scale, although to be absolutely accurate, his song's about the pintabeer scale (an ancient scale from which the pintatonic scale was developed, primarily, but not exclusively, for female musicians, many of whom found that the pintabeer scale caused strain in the right wrist while playing).

Over to you, Mr. Barden. Let's hear it (or rather, as this is an internet forum, let's see it).

I tried typing that scale into Gargle, but my cerveza wouldn't let me.
When I saw the pintatonic scale mentioned, I assumed it was a typo for Pinto-tonic, which is a medicinal potion for white horses.
Stops 'em from becoming Dead Horses.
And I always thought a mandril was the bit on ya boring tool that held the bits.
I usually hold me own bits, but sometimes a kindly passing stranger will oblige.

Mr Bridge "I am going for the copy write on the pintatonic scale. Mr Barden Indeed,
"I put it to you all, Twas it not a humble spelling mistake on my behalf ? That brought about this break through in music.

Kev and Vt , once mastered if you want to play my Pintatonic scale in D with backing from a struming guitar in the same key,Follow this.

Go to google.
                                                                Click on web page.
                                                                Type in search bar.
                                                                  Jam studio.com.
Up it will come click on the very first site.

Fill the boxes in front of with D taken from the chord rack.
Choose the guitar style you want to accompany from the style rack.
You can do the same with drums and bass but I tend to stick with just a guitar strumming/optional ?
Important click on the Loop box for continual loop in D. or you can have chord changes in every box if you want.
Turn your speakers on.
There is a tempo button on the far left. choose your tempo. I choose 120/ optional
press the play button under the chord rack for a continuous loop in D or whatever you wish.

I find it makes playing Mandolin scales much more fun then just sitting there.
its gives a sense of rhythm to play scales to.
And I have learned quicker then just siting there Playing with me self .Go for it.

I'm wondering, having read the inventively-family-publicising Rafflesbear's thread on "Feral Folk" whether the locals of Lower Coke (sorry, Stoke) count.

THere was the recent karaoke night when a girl presumably cristened "Charlotte" was to sing, but was missing (or should that have been a "p"?). The innocent operator announced "I'm looking for Charlie". A large gentleman with a flashing smile and a golden ring (spot the quote) announced "So's every other count in Lower Stoke".

Certainly Mad Mick and Sprout and his cousin John can, with the aid of a crossbow and a few dogs, can and do live off teh local marshes, and since they are not horses they must be folk, and since they live outside the norms of society are they not feral?

Or, since it is not a "Folk Club" whatever the blogspot says, is what we do there at least Folk Farouche?

Richard I understand that The last Nags session this year will be April 19th. Is that correct ?
given plenty of notice I can book the weekend off. I hate missing these sessions because I enjoy them so very much.

Kev the cloggs and Val showed up for the Martin Carthy gig at Folkmob Wed and I was given a Events program for The Bishop Gundolf's Morris for 2009.
I am looking forward to attending has many has possible,

Finally have a great session Sunday
all the best
Pierre.

That'll be George, not Paul, who comes with Fisheye, I think Paul might be the excellent guitarist who sometimes comes with Little Legs (or Wee Jock, as I think he prefers).

We might get Fiddlefit too (they ahve been before).

I will Txt Jeff too - you have not seen him in action I think, VT: he is truly excellent.

A young lad from the village asked if he could come and borrow a guitar - he said he was quite good - so I will lend him one.

One of these years I hope we will get the excellent Marian Button, and also Richard Matthewman.

Will Sleepy Rosie come albeit in disguise?

RM, the 25th was yesterday, can I have some of what you are smoking please? What is on at the Crayford on the 28th - Noreen from the Cat will be down with her husband and there seems to be nothing to do on the Saturday?

British Summer Time
British Summer Time (BST) starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October, at 1.00 am Greenwich Mean Time (GMT):

in spring the clocks go forward, losing an hour - at 1.00 am GMT the UK moves to 2.00 am BST
in autumn the clocks go back, giving an extra hour - at 2.00 am BST the UK moves to 1.00 am GMT
In the next three years, the summer time periods begin and end on the following dates:

                   2009      2010       2011
Clocks go forward 29 March   28 March   27 March
Clocks go back    25 October 31 October 30 October

Just found this thread!

Stewart and I had a lovely weekend, sightseeing, meeting new people and making and listening to music. Wish we lived closer so we could attend regularly.

Thank you Richard for your hospitality and for your folkie caravan, which will now go on to visit more and different festivals- perhaps it should have a visitors book to record where it's been and who it has met?!

I am trying to link some names on this thread to faces from today's sing.

I had already met Essex Girl, Dead Horse and Kay of the flying feet, and have now met Richard.
melodeon boy I can work out, he of the powerful shirt and even more powerful voice,
VirginiaTam I have worked out from the American accent- lovely House of the Rising Sun!
Don(Wyziwyg)T I worked out from his guitar (and Mudcat badge!)
Growler I heard someone mention, with the poorly foot
Fisheye with the camera, I presume
and
Dilligaf who arrived just as we were leaving.

Who else was there that I may have heard of on this thread and from elsewhere on the Mudcat?

Movement of the public is acceptable in a session as it adds to the atmosphere, however being barged out of the way does go a little too far, I will say no more as to the mentality or the reputation of the person.

I have to say, Fisheye, that that Rode mic you now have on the videocam does wonders!. Very directional, so Clive's splendid honky-tonk piano was not always captured, but the mic really really flattered my voice - which as you say was a bit on the rough side after that throat infecton all week, but relieved by strepsils before the event and beer during!

That Marks in the Grass, makes me cry. The message so powerful and rendered beautifully by both Romanyman's lyrics and Barden's composition and performance.

It is heartstopping good. Hell, my eyes are watering just thinking about it.

RB you did sound pretty amazing on Muddy Waters. Can you replicate laryngitis at will for specific songs?

RB I have had a response from B Rodgers. I replied and copied you in at your work addie. Miss my guitar, though this little Lamaq is lovely.

Great stuff. RomanayMan, it has a slightly different tune to the one that you have heard before.

John, I'll bring your tin back on Friday night.

Indeed ,Melodeon Boy. I believe you are right.
But in Laurel and Hardys case it was about Rent Money.

I am not sure if it was Blotto ? there was Stan And Ollie and James Finleyson. Bald Headed Landlord with those Hilarious Goggly Eyes. and L& Hs wife's. Brilliant confusion.

Yes Indeed "That is where I got the above from.

I am a great L&H Fan and have everything they have got on 2 DVD box sets.
You are welcome to borrow them and give em back at Sweeps. I ,ll bring em to RBS session at the Nags on the 19th April. If you like L& H you will love the box sets? Up to you mate.

Richard
I have been to link above and its good but for 1 thing. The leaving of Liverpool is blaring out in the back ground. Nothing wrong with that but it also continues to blare out when Vt is singing and when John is singing on the Vidios. which ruins everything because one has to endure a complete Row.
Regards to all Pierre.
