20 Feb 09 - 05:25 AM (#2571597) Subject: Kelham Island Tavern win National Award From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) The Kelham Island Tavern in Sheffield has won the CAMRA National Pub of the Year Award. The Kelham has always been an active supporter of Sheffield Folk Festival and there have been some magic sessions at Folk Festival weekends in the past years. As well as this it host a regular Sunday night session plus a once a month 'Old Timey' session. The award is justified as it is brilliant pub serving good beer at a sensible price, the fact it's my local means i am obviously biasedbut well done Trevor and Lewis. |

When I hear landlords whinging about not making any money and how trade is bad and supermarkets are killing business to a certain extent they do have my sympathy. But no-one wanted the Kelham Island, it was up for sale for ages. It was well-known as a pub that no-one could make any money owning. And in eight years of solid hard graft Trev and Lewis have taken it to the top. The staff are brilliant as well. It has had an extension - built by folkies by the way - and a fantastic amount of work on the garden. What for strangers might be even more remarkable is that there is another wonderful award winning pub about a hundred yards away. So it is not as if he has done this without a bit of competition. Jim is right it is his local. Any evening I go in there Jim is there. The same could be said for another two pubs though to my certain knowledge!! Jim's always in there as well. |
