20 Feb 09 - 11:47 AM (#2571837) Subject: Appropriate folk tunes for TV ads From: Will Fly I was whiling away a pleasant house last night, leafing through my scrapbook of papillae maximae with the TV burbling away in the background when, during the ad break, I heard the strains of that old English dance tune "The Winster Gallop". Couldn't remember what the ad was for, but it seems that the ad men have got round to using folk tunes in TV ads. What folkie tunes/songs do you think might be suitable for TV ads? You know the sort of thing: "I drove an old Rover for many a year..", etc. (Gets coat). |

Except maybe the Gypsy Rover song... That will certainly get me to shut the idiot box off. It makes my ears bleed. There is a black and white film of old man shearing sheep. The background music (gaelic I think) is a female singing lovely lilting, makes me tingle. Then it devolves into a should have gone to SpecSavers ad. The old sheepshearer has blindly sheared his dog. Pity! I thought it was a trailer for some film. I was bitterly disappointed. |

One advert filled the whole spot - unusual in in itself - for The Coop - The Shops, the Bank and all the other bits and pieces that remain of the British / English Cooperative Society. The music? Did I imagine it or was Woody Guthrie's car song used recently in an Audi advert? I also saw an advert (was it for a bank or insurance - I'm blowed if I noticed the product!) recently with cod-Dylan guitar strumming and harmonica. The Wild Rover's also been used on something recently. As mentioned above, The Galway Girl's been used to advertise a product that's passed off as cider. I'm sorry to be so vague about which adverts they were: I always seem to switch off from the product that they're advertising! |
