21 Feb 09 - 12:19 PM (#2572514) Subject: Obit: RIP Buster B. Jones Guitarist From: Jayto One of my friends and big musical influences passed away Feb.2 2009. Buster B. Jones passed away in Oregon. He and I had been friends for 10 yrs or longer. He was a very innovative and high energy guitarist. Fingerstyle guitar has had a massive loss with Buster passing away. I will miss him and will never forget all the time spent hanging out with him and all the music we played over the years. RIP Buster. JT |

There are better videos but this is one of my favs. It reminds me of the many jams we had just sitting around. He would always go all over the place making songs medley's. He always laughed and said he had bad adhd but I know his mind was so musical every note made him think of a million more. Man I am gonna miss him. cya JT |

Thom Bresh introduced me to Buster when I was about 18 or so. Both of these guys took me under their and spent alot of time through the years hanging out and picking with me. Most of all though they were (and are) great friends. Buster and Bresh were best buddies and were together for years touring around and hanging out. Thom Bresh is Merle Travis's son for those that don't know him. Thank you Bonnie and your right he probably is picking with him right now. That so many super fine pickers held him in such esteem is a testimony to his influence. This is a great loss, but because Buster took so many young pickers like Jayto under his wing he has left a great legacy to both himself, the music, and the guitar. Truly a great picker who will live on through many of those who admired him. |

I can't believe I had no idea Brad took his talent, sittin on his front step pickin across the street, to the heights that he did... I've probably heard Tom Petty play him on XM Satellite and didn't even realize it! Growing up, Brad's three older sisters used to babysit us. Brad always looked so studious and reflective when he sat on his front step and practiced his skill... also seemed like it took him to a larger universe, far from the trivial chaos of our little neighborhood. I particularly liked him cuz he stuck up for me and gave me peace when all the other neighborhood kids were being mean and nasty, as kids will do. Brad was fun-loving and compassionate and kind. My deepest sympathy to all those who loved and were close to him. ...Memorial service will be in Boone, Iowa this afternoon. (We grew up on a two-block street called Summit Ave in Ames, Iowa--great big sledding hill behind my house, pine forest off to one side and Squaw Creek at the bottom of the hill. Can't believe they're replacing it all with an Aquatic Center! In Iowa?!) Thanks again, all. |

By the time he really caught on in the music world he had already been playing a while as Buster so it really caught my attention when I saw you say Brad. I remember I did this gig one time yrs ago. It was a real big multiple billing festival thing. Thom Bresh and Buster were also on the bill that night. Afterward a few of the performers were invited to this real fancy and ultra expensive get together at a local person's house. I had never met Buster at this point he blew my mind at the concert and I knew I wanted to meet him. Bresh and I had been friends for several yrs but Buster was new (and he went by Brad then). I arrived at the house and it was over the top. Everyone except the performers from the concert were in suits and ties you get the vibe. It was great and the host was very nice and hospitable. The food was GREAT I mean GREAT. After eating I fixed a drink and stepped outside. I am bad about that lol don't really mean to be rude just somewhat a loner unless there is music being played. I wasn't out there 5 minutes probably and Buster came out. He lit a cigarette and walked over and sit down on the steps by me. He looked over and said "They are nice folks I just don't dig the fancy vibe. I need to jump back to reality for a minute." I started laughing and told him "Me too man." We had a great time that night. We sit out there for ever just talking about everything from growing up to musical heroes. He was older than me but didn't treat me like a kid. That impressed me because at that time I caught that alot from the other performers in certain circles. We started crossing paths alot for a while after that and I watched his world totally change. I saw him transform into the master he became. He never changed his attitude and everytime I would see him right up until the last time he always took time to hang out and just talk. I have a picture I am looking for but I am afraid it lost. It is from the last time he and I hung out. Me, Buster, and Nokie Edwards (guitarist from the Ventures) were hanging out in Thom Bresh's backyard in Nashville Tn. grilling one day. A friend came up and said "now there's a picture that needs to be." They were right. cya JT |

Beautiful memorial service here in central Iowa yesterday afternoon, beautiful, warm, sunny day. I'm sure Nancy will share more on one of the other web sites when she gets back to Junction City/Oregon. Although I'd never met her before, it was as if we'd known each other forever. While I was looking forward to seeing the rest of the family after so many years (four of his six siblings were there, with lots of children!), I was so hoping to be able to meet Nancy, and there she was! ...Had a cigarette with her and Brad's best friend from Ames before going into the luncheon after the service and sat and ate and talked with them inside before reuniting and meeting the others... Even if someone master's his guitar chops they will never be him. I remember heading back to hotels and hanging out for hours with him telling jokes and card tricks and on and on. He was just a fun guy to be with. He never ego tripped or anything. He got more outgoing as he progressed in the music scene. Really though he remained himself. He just let himself be seen more. At first he was quite and more keptaround crowds. He would cut loose when just a few of us were around. The longer he went the more he allowed himself to open up when others were around. He was a blast. Then when he took the stage it was isanity. The licks he'd hit and the touch he had man. Jerry Reed was one of both our hero's. Jerry passed on last yr as well. Buster blew Jerry's mind and Chet's lol. That is not an easy task. Plus he was pretty rebellious for the scene. I always admired that aspect of him. I never met Nancy. I lost contact with him several years ago. I think about 3 if I remember right. Bresh had a cookout at his place and that was the last time we were together. Are schedules were different and we just stopped crossing paths. I hate it for sure now. I always asked Bresh about him and kept in touch through him. I remember that last time I saw him. Me, Thom Bresh, Nokie Edwards, Jack Clement, Murial Anderson, John Knowles, and Tommy Emmanuel all hung out at Bresh's all day and night. We picked and ate and picked and ate ...etc it was a great day. One I will never forget now for sure. |
