Playing with Others

Today I played music with another person for the first time in (literally) years. It was the most fun I've had since I can't remember when. I have also acquired two little recorder students, 5 and 7 years of age.

Their mother is one of my best and oldest friends, but we've hardly ever played music together. Apparently, she has accompanied me singing, but I don't remember this. Mostly, I accompanied myself on the guitar. Today I played the recorder and she played the piano.

Her middle little girl has been wanting to play the recorder and I gave her a little impromptu lesson when she came in with her recorder after we finished playing. I also showed her how to clean the recorder and grease the joints. During the "lesson", her big sister came and joined in. When my friend drove me home, she asked whether I'd considered giving music lessons. I said, I'd give them to her children, but otherwise didn't want to. She agreed immediately! Now I can put all my theories of early childhood musical education into practice.

My friend also wants us to play again, which is also nice. I think unaccompanied recorder might not go over too well at an open mike night, which is something I'd like to do in the not-too-distant future.

That's great!! Playing with others is an experience beyond words. It brings you back to life musically.

Jayto is right. Playing with others is wonderful. The most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Been having a similar joy, singing with others-- I've been taking spirituals out into the field (meetings, workshops) and sort of flipping the events into a looser mode as needed with an apt spiritual adapted for the occasion. Wow! What fun!

Piers, a solo at a club might work if you are as good as Franz Bruggen.

Otherwise, an accompanist is advised.

Learning to play with others is a qualification for being a good musician.

I am afraid you are probably right.

We played a couple of tangos by Carlos Gardel and she liked them and wants to work on them. I think they might go over well at a club, even if it's not the usual fare. Tango is very popular here, anyway, and his songs are very good.

Er, I suppose so. I mostly haven't had the opportunity or didn't really push it when I did have people around me who were playing together. My last attempt to find people by putting up a notice was somewhat of a disaster.

I did notice that sloppy counting (or not counting) does not work at all when playing with another person. I've gotten a bit lax in that respect. I often play songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim and other Latin American songs and one really has to count, so I do know better.

Good man PP! When I started playing guitar (now over 40 years ago) I was lucky enough to have a friend who started at the same time as me. To say that we learned from each other and helped each other would be an understatement. And I've been equally lucky to have found other musicians to play/jam/rehearse/busk with over the years. You can't beat it.

It beats playing with yourself.

I have had the privilege of playing in two duos, one with Richard Grainger, and one with Sue Miles[Weir],both were enjoyable because we listened to each other.
six months ago,I played in Sicily with Richard Grainger, and although we hadnt played together for a number of years,it worked well .http://www.dickmiles.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItcBocS_x_M&feature=channel_page
