Do you learn all your tunes by ear?

If so, then these tests were designed especially for you & all those other folks here, who reckon they have a REALLY GOOD EAR for learning tunes.

If you only learn your tunes by ear, then you should be hot stuff on these tests.

It'd be interesting to see if all those folks who only learn their tunes by reading the dots, are actually pretty rubbish at these tests, after all! :-)

Musical memory test 69.4% However, I don't sing play or understand music and to be fair, my daughter had the telly on in the background, which was pretty distracting

What interesting tests! I'm going to bookmark that and have another go another time when more relaxed.

Tonedeaf did the best 80.6 - just above average.
The pitch 4.5 and rythm 68 tests - both in average.

I thouhgt the pitch one was especially fascinating. And tricky.

It says I need to load something called 'Flash 1.14' before I take the test. And it wants to sell me something called Lumosity.

Is this secretly a test for shrewdness? Because I am not going to download an unknown program which might interfere with my cherished music activities.

Ha! musical memory - 86.1%; rhythm- 76%; and the pitch perception was "normal"...that one takes very careful listening. Thanks, Dick. I enjoyed those, the musical memory one, esp. Reminded me of the 9 years my brother lived with us and composed orchestral music full-time. I'd come home from work and he'd ask me to listen to some part with a one note variant and tell him which one I liked best. He also used to have me listen to the great classics when I was a kid and have me pick out each type of instrument. That, along with piano and violin lessons and playing in orchestra, was great training for me, as well as mom and dad's playing by ear and dots.

Interesting: Musical memory 80.6% (very good), Pitch Perception 0.675 Hz (exceptional), Rhythm 76% (very good).

I think that means I always know when my banjo is out of tune*

*Second attempt; I closed my eyes for pitch perception & found it really helped. I screwed up on the rhythm test first time round by misidentifying some 'same's as 'different' - I got 76% by being conservative and only pressing 'different' when I was sure. (Of course, that still means I was wrong 24% of the time!)

Heh, I tried them again early this morning, and got shit results, right down into the err, "you're completely fecked" range for most!

And OMG, the one with the pictures did my head in for the first half... With very mixed results.

This is very much like the Listening test from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne UK. They'd invited me to continue being tested but I haven't heard anything from them for a couple of years.

Just tried the shapes and sounds one and got 100, 100,95.2,97.8 and 100.
Is there any connection here with the fact that I predominantly think in chords rather than melody, the extra complexity is something I'm always dealing with in the way I listen?

The fact is, they all sound different for the simple reason they are generated using different tonal envelopes. This is why banjo players don't play guitars.

Give us a test using the same instrument. Or a clean tone generator, not midi. What is the control strategy of this so called 'scientific test' I wonder?*

yesterday a woman said she preferred my version of a well known recorded song to the original and 2 other people complemented me on my voice

having done similar tests at described whilst studying grades for the piano the joy of 'folk' is the freedom to do it yer own way crap or not

anyway i didnt want to sign up

so all you guys who scored well , well done , its good for your brain
as for Villan , get up and bloody sing a song, regardless.

Works fine with Firefox, here.

I like the use of the same instrument in the other link which MGAS posted, though it seems easier as they use the same tunes in different combos. I got 28 out of 30 on both; the next day I got 29 out of 30...the tunes become familiar.

I guess I should stick to drums then.
