24 Feb 09 - 12:52 PM (#2574810) Subject: Lyr. Add: CU CU RU CU CU PALOMA (Mendes) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Cu cu ru cu cu Paloma, a ranchera, was composed by Tomas Mendes Sosa (Thomas Mendez). It became popular in Latin America and in the southwestern United States (hit record by Lola Beltran). It was copied into "New Mexican Folk Songs," Charles F. Lummis (manuscript, indexed in Hispanic-American Folk Song Permathread). The version by Belafonte is accurate, but he revised the ending chorus, following Lola Beltran. Accents are added in the verses given below: Lyr. Cu cu rru cu cu ... no llores ... Las piedras jamás, paloma, ¿Qué van a saber ... de amores? Para terminar la canción: (Coda) Cu cu rru cu cu .......... cu cu rru cu cu .......... cu cu rru cu cu .......... Paloma, ya no le llores ...... From Charles F. Lummis manuscript. Titles of all songs in the MS are given in the Hispanic-American Folk Song thread, 118037: Hispanic American Lola Beltran Lyrics: Cu cu ru cu cu paloma |

Silliness and sarcasm on behalf of Monique and Mr Happy not only wastes time - you could just as easily have posted the lyrics - but is against the spirit of Mudcat. Shame on you. |
25 Feb 09 - 11:57 AM (#2575637) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julie Felix - Cu Cu Ru Cu Cu From: GUEST,leeneia I think Monique's post was perfectly reasonable. She supplied a good tip to use in searching and she guided us to a site which may have useful information about the song and additional songs of the same type. All these things are nice. Posting the lyrics again just wastes bandwidth. As for Mr. Happy, he made a little joke. We'll survive. Now I'm going to see if I can find a MIDI for this song. |

25 Feb 09 - 12:22 PM (#2575651) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julie Felix - Cu Cu Ru Cu Cu From: ClaireBear I could sing it for you...it was Top 40 in my house, growing up. Actually it was more like Top 2. Only Cancion Mixteca was more requested. But you gotta be able to yodel to do it right. Would you settle for a playable recording of Joan Baez singing it? I found that on this page. Look in the box in the middle of the page...it's the third song down, below Amapola and La Paloma. There are several audio files available for it (including a really bad MIDI and a rather improbable version by Nana Mouskouri). The Baez version, though, es muy autentico. And the Trini Lopez and Perla renditions are pretty good, too. Claire, or should I say Clarita? |

18 Oct 10 - 05:18 PM (#3010089) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cucurrucuru, Paloma (Tomas Mendez Sosa) From: GUEST,leeneia Many songs that we think of as Mexican folk classics are actually from old movies. Here's a version of this song from an old black-and-white. I like it. That's the kind of state I like my men to be in - overwhelmed and totally in thrall. And yes, if they can yodel, that's a plus. That MIDI (discussed above) has something wrong with it. I can't find the melody; all that's there is a repetitious accompaniment. Oops - I will have to put the link to the old movie in the next post. |
