24 Feb 09 - 01:55 PM (#2574852) Subject: Australian Folk recommendations From: GUEST Hi, Im looking for a starting point in Australian Folk. Anybody have any tips? Recently listened to an album by Glen Tomasetti, which is amazing and has got me ready for more. Preferably after folk revival era stuff, but willing to give anything a try. Thanks |
24 Feb 09 - 04:25 PM (#2574980) Subject: RE: Australian Folk recommendations From: Rowan Get yourself along to the National Folk Festival, in Canberra, at Easter. You'll be exposed to just about every style going and meet most of the practitioners as well as being able to check out performances and sales of music, books and instruments. Cheers, Rowan |

24 Feb 09 - 05:37 PM (#2575048) Subject: RE: Australian Folk recommendations From: GUEST,Gerry I doubt that very many of the revival era recordings are available on CD. Here are a few artists to look out for, most of them post-revival, in random order, with apologies to all the ones I leave out: Phyl Lobl, Declan Affley, Gordon McIntyre and Kate Delaney, Dennis Tracey, Eric Bogle, Harry Robertson, The Fagans, Margaret Walters and/or John Warner, The Larrikins, The Bushwhackers, Wongawilli, Us Not Them (aka Jason & Chloe Roweth), Alistair Hulett, Kate & Ruth, Cathy O'Sullivan, .... Also possibly easier to find in the UK would be albums of Australian songs recorded by Martyn Wyndham-Reade (spelling?) and by Gerry Hallom. |
24 Feb 09 - 07:04 PM (#2575164) Subject: RE: Australian Folk recommendations From: rich-joy Try Paul the Stockman's pages on blogspot.com : http://australianfolk.blogspot.com/ "Australian Folk and Bush Music and Musicians : Focusing on folk and bush ballad music of Australia and Australian entertainers" (though that is possibly where you have heard Glen Tomasetti?!) Oz folk performer and folklorist, Warren Fahey, has a website that is a goldmine of Oz folk data. Ditto the "Simply Australia" website. The Australian monthly folk magazine "Trad & Now", has a vast Oz CD-for-sale cattledog, too .... Cheers, R-J |

But I've bookmarked it & have it pinned down. Warren Fahey's site Simply Australia Trad and Now Folk Trax, another Australian on-line CD shop |

22 Sep 15 - 07:57 PM (#3739181) Subject: RE: Australian Folk recommendations From: Stewie My favourite of current groups is Loaded Dog from Western Australia. Their albums have both contemporary and traditional folk, including some beaut compositions from band members, particularly Alan Mann, and wonderful tunes from Bob Rummery. Their website appears to have not been updated for some time, but has info on their first three albums. Unreservedly recommended. Loaded Dog --Stewie. |
23 Sep 15 - 12:07 AM (#3739209) Subject: RE: Australian Folk recommendations From: dick.hamlet About a year ago, John Thompson recorded and posted an "Australian Folk Song a Day". You can now buy a CD of the 365 songs at his blog: http://ozfolksongaday.blogspot.com The blog itself has lots of songs and information. These are mostly the traditional songs, recorded for the purpose of archiving them, and ideal for learning the tunes and words. |
