From Max: Mudcat Update 2-25-09

25 Feb 09 - 09:21 AM (#2575482)
Subject: From Max: Mudcat Update 2-25-09
From: Max

Hi folks, sorry I've been silent for a while, but if you had any idea what I've been up to, you'd understand.

So, the mudcat move is happening this Friday, the 27th of February. We should be down from about Noon EST to sometime that evening/night (if all goes as planned). Because of the nature of Internet propagation, some will have access to the site sooner than others. I will attempt to publish the IP in various places, like Facebook, so you can get in the back door until the world updates our name's new number.

I'm planning a site upgrade/redesign by summer. As we evolve, the priorities of the site change and my new design will reflect our current focus. I will create a thread, in time, for you all to submit a wish list of features; please do not start that now or here in this thread.

We'll have some new Vols by Spring, I know some of you are waiting for word from me, hang in there another couple of weeks, it'll be the first thing I do once mudcat is moved and settled.

Do not send anything to the PO Box or any other address you have had for me or mudcat until further notice. I should have a new PO Box set up in the next couple of weeks.

That's all for now… much to do.

Max

No withdrawal here. Sorry Max, but there isn't much you can DO to fix the clique messes, or the Personal abuses. Including those from 'approved clones'. The existing clone/admin list might need some looking at.

I will no longer use mud 'chat' in the future. Just too much 'stuff' has been passed from room to room, including a lot of just plain LIES, and an attempt to get one person declared 'Mudcat insane' and 'paranoid'.

I have my own place now, and I admit that it is by Invitation ONLY, just like Gioks'.

If you'd like an invite to my chat room, send me a PM and include your email if you think I might not have it. I will check PM's

Thanks for all the fish.

Maybe we should all stand in a big circle and do a 10... 9... 8... countdown.

What did they used to prefix this with in the old sci-films when rockets were about to launch? "X-minus-10" or somthing? Anyone know what that phrase actually means?

I expected nothing less. My buddy is a whiz, and I am constantly blown away by his unique ability to juggle so many balls. I think, if the head examine folks were to peek in there, they would find that he is the perfect blend of insane IQ, ADHD, and a dude who just loves folks and family, life, music, and a beagle. Actually, I hope they don't figure out the beagle, cause that might be grounds for committal. I don't think they allow mudcat boxes in a padded cell......LOL. The insane IQ allows him to resolve problems quickly, and then the ADHD kicks in and he moves on to something else, like family, friends, music, and the beagle. The love of all that keeps him checking in until there is a problem again...... then he focuses on fixing it, and getting back on with loving life... see how it works? And we are all the happy recipients of this wonder of nature, and we are all over the world. I'm tellin' ya .... we are the world ...... we are the children .... we are

I'll get me aul cap and wellies and see meself out......

Hi Max
Thanks for all your effort.

One thing I have noticed is that normally, having read the latest post in a thread, the thread title changes colour to indicate that there are no new posts.
However, I am finding that the threads that I have looked at are not changing colour. I go back in and there are no new posts. It seems to be an intermittant issue.

For me it's not a big issue, but thought I would point it out as backburner issue. Maybe its just a teething issue.

Cheers
Les Worrall

Yes, I've found the same thing, though as Les says, it's intermittent.

Also, sometimes when I click Submit - with the preview box NOT ticked, so the message should then appear on the boards - it can just disappear without a trace or visible effect. A number of brilliant pearls of wisdom have been lost to civilisation that way. Now I scribble my sacred utterances down on Wordpad or TextEdit before sending them on their way, and sometimes I need to go back and copy-paste them again: it usually works on the second try, though once it took about four attempts. (Maybe the fates were trying to tell me something?)

I use both Windows-XP-Firefox, and Apple-OSX-Safari&Firefox. I think it has happened with both machines but can't be sure. It definitely happens with Windows.

This disappering post problem has been around for ages. I 'think' it has more to do with your browser's cache than Mudcat. After having it happen to me a couple of times, I have just adopted the habit of checking after I post...then, if it didn't 'take', I use my *back* button to return to what I typed. It should still be there....until you close your browser. Then I copy it, return to the main page and ***RELOAD*** Mudcat. Note..NOT 'refresh'. Reload puts a new copy of the Mudcat forum in the browser's cache, whereas 'refresh' may only get an older copy. Then I return to the thread, paste in my post, and submit again. All this takes only about 5 seconds.

I frankly do not know the technical details of everything that is happening, or why at a certain point Mudcat & your browser don't listen to each other...but it does work to do the 'reload' bit.

Yes, it does also work to do composing in WORD or some other program, but I never remember.

Or, just highlight and copy what you've written in the text box and you'll have it available if the post doesn't go through.

Yes if you remember each time..I don't ...but the post 'can' disappear more than once if the cache problem persists.

I forgot to mention that if it is a continuing problem, there are settings for each browser to control cache behavior - how often it is refreshed, how large it is...etc. My Opera version has a setting called "Check how often page is updated on the server" ...right now it is "every 2 hours", with options for "always", "never", and then from 5 minutes to weekly.

It could help to play with those settings. (No,I have no idea how you do it in IE)

I suspect that *IF* you were to set your browser to update the cache 'always'..that is, every time you post or access a page, this would not happen. The down side is that folks on slower connections would find it taking too long to do anything.

As more & more folks get fast broadband, it is less of an issue and updating the entire page is barely noticable....for the average site.

One can experiment. I find that my 'every 2 hours' setting seems to work ok, so I don't mess with it... (I think it was the default when I got the browser)

Hee hee hee - I copy-pasted Giok's three smileys, which on screen shows the smiley and in the preview text box shows the numbers & # 9 7 8 6 but without the spaces. Then I tried typing them manually and got the one in the second row. That must be how to do it on a Mac laptop, which is what I'm using.

Gonna go harvest the other numbers now - but I'll spare you all the fruits of my efforts.

In Windows XP, you can click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, right-click Character Map and click Create Shortcut. This will put an icon on your desktop. Character Map has all sorts of neat symbols...the ALT keystrokes are provided for some, others you have to copy and paste.

The Villan in his message at 02 Mar 09 - 05:08 AM mentioned threads not changing colour after he visited them.

I notice that the links in the graphic at the top now start with http://mudcat.org while all the other links still start with http://www.mudcat.org like they always did. This could be the explanation. With two different names for the web address the browser thinks it is two different pages even though we know they should be the same, so visited pages (changed colour) will appear as not visited (blue) if you click on the top graphic.

Does this make sense?

Often thread titles appear not to change colour after you have visited them because you return to the threads list by hitting 'Back'. This takes you to the page you have already seen, as it was when you visited it
To see the updated list of threads, go to "Lyrics & knowledge" instead (top left of the screen)!

Ah! Hash codes. I use them a lot for my foreigh language FAQs. see Russian but if you save the page I am not sure it saves all the fancy codes

Not all browsers show all codes.

If you look on several browsers you will get the idea, most of the code I had problems with were in the High Numbers.

I got a phone call from a Mudcatter last night. He said Mudcat was down Monday and Tuesday mornings. I was gone Monday, but I noticed Tuesday that at about noon Mudcat time (9 AM my time), Mudcat had a "placed offline by operator" message off and on.
Today, I notice that Mudcat is very slow at times.

I e-mailed Max, and he said that Mudcat has been slow or offline because he has been fixing and tweaking things. This process will continue over the next couple of weeks, so don't worry about it.
