the bad seed (charles kratz) on CD

Subject: the bad seed (charles kratz) on CD

Last fall, Joe, one of the members of my Monday night at Sally's group, told me he liked my singing--and even my banjo picking and harmonica playing--and told me he'd like to record me. Joe is a fine jazz guitarist whom we have dragged into the folk/old time camp, along with his classical violinist wife Courtney, under our decadent influence now a funky old time fiddler, and so I told Joe I'd love to be recorded--with him and Courtney joining me, and before we started, we also added two more members of the group, Clark on mandolin and Michael on stand up bass. We got together a couple of Sunday afternoons at Joe and Courtney's place in the city and spent three or four hours each day recording--and eating cheeze and drinking wine.

On a Monday just before Christmas Joe brought copies of a CD he'd engineered from the sessions and gave them to all of the other members of the group--the response was very positive (kind folks), and so I started making copies and giving them to other friends and local family members, and the response is uniformly positive--with the possible exception of a former student of mine, Joshua Redman, whom I met in a Burger King. The disk I handed him was without a jewel case--and up until then, without any notes on the tunes and performers, and so I emailed him a set list and some notes, and he hasn't yet responded. Joe was astonished that I had the gall to give our disk to such an accomplished, famous musician.

Anyway, I revised the note I sent to Josh and slapped it into a word processing document sized to fit in a jewel case, and have given a bunch to a lot more friends and dog park acquaintances, and got a bunch more positive feedback, and decided I'd try to make a bit better packaging and send them to my non-local family and friends.

The old time folk and country songs on the CD are all under copyright (not mine), so I can't sell them, but I'd be happy to give them to anyone who'd like to have one--for packaging and mailing costs. I don't know if it would be legal to sell them with a non-profit organization (the Mudcat) getting all the proceeds--someone can advise me on this. My idea is that if that is legally royalty-free, I'd do it, starting after a couple of weeks, with those who send me their snail mail addresses in that time getting one for the cost of shipping, and after that paying Mudcat shipping plus a few bucks, recipients of the free ones could suggest a reasonable price.

It's a short CD--37 minutes with eight songs, me singing lead vocal on seven or them, and two tunes (to which I contributed little). Anyway, if you want one and are willing to risk a buck or two for packaging and mailing, send me your address at

chazkratz@mac.com

I dunno' why the hell you'd think you had any friends around here...............

Actually, I miss you and a lot of folks from a few years back. And as kat said, you still have more friends here than you know. I ain't sure about El Swanno......If I were you I might forego getting together with him as he seems to be incredibly accident prone.

CD? Damn straight I'll take one.....even pay for it! Send me a PM with details on how to get you the money and I'll take care of it. And then you promise to at least look in now and then huh?

Thread Creep Warning: Ajanta? Are you local? Ajanta is in my top five Bay Area restaurants.

Ahem. Thanks to reading too fast, I sent my info to you in a PM rather than to your website, Oops. I'll remedy that now.

Thanks,

Sharyn

Yeah, Gargoyle got born again - sorta kinda. Now he's everybody's best friend - sorta kinda.
But it is good to see you back, Charles. It's been a long time since I've seen you. Maybe we should get you to go to Camp New Harmony in Santa Rosa some year?
Yes, sharyn, Charles is local. I've seen him at places where I've also seen you - but maybe not at the same time. He's very well-behaved, so you may not have noticed him like...some others. [grin]

I thought I sent this last night; I guess I just wrote it then forgot to post it. I haven't received an email from you. Could you try again or use a Mudcat personal message instead?

Hi, folks. Sorry to be late in sending the CDs--I've been having printer problems and have been unable to print out the liner notes/internal envelopes. I hope this weekend to solve the problems and get the thing shipped.

I sent out nine CDs so far (two to katlaughing--including one for Night Owl), and have received four responses (again, two from katl, and two from recipients unable to play them--I accidentally sent a blank one to oldhippie and the one I sent to Art was broken--in those stiff CD envelopes it must take some pretty rough postal handling to break a CD, and one response from Sharyn, in the form of a promise to send me hers to which I'm now listening--I've already sent a tested replacement to oldhippie and one will go into the mail to Art tomorrow morning). So, thus far I have heard only from Kat regarding the recording, and would appreciate hearing from the rest of you, preferably here rather than via PM. I'm still sending them out free to any Mudcatters willing to listen.

Also, I'm hoping to have another, more ambitious recording in the next few months. If I can keep my dogs quiet long enough I'll record some of it solo here, and more at Joe and Courtney's new house ("Live from the Haight-Ashbury", and perhaps a tune or two from the whole Monday Night at Sally's gang. This, too, because of the many copyrighted songs, will be free--or perhaps this time sold as a benefit for the 'Cat.

Hi Charles,

I haven't said anything only because no machine I own will play your disc -- they just say "no disc." I want to hear your music -- I just can't until my IT brother comes up here and tells me what to do.

I'll report in once I can hear your music. Thanks for sending it.

kat--sorry about katl--I had written out the whole name and decided I didn't need to so soon after having previously done so, and tried to shorten it down to kat--and didn't notice until just now that my deletion of the end of the longer name started a letter too late. Egad!

Sharyn, perhaps the same thing happened to you as happened to oldhippie--I accidentally sent an as yet unrecorded disk. It takes about ten minutes to record a disk but only about a minute to write the data on the disk, so I was writing on unrecorded disks, then popping them into my Mac to record on as the other disk finished, and somehow I got one--or more--unrecorded ones mixed up with the recorded ones. I'll send you a new one, one I will have checked to make certain it's recorded.

By the way, a Mac Mini--as do all Macs of recent years--has a disk drive; it's the long slot high on the face of the unit, I assume. You can use the drive to load CDs into your iTunes.

And sorry I missed your earlier message about this.

Upon first listen, my favorite bit was the harmonica solo on "Folsom Prison." And, uncharacteristically, for me, I really like the tune, "Whiskey Before Breakfast." The recording quality could be a bit clearer -- my computer won't play it loudly enough and it won't play at all on my CD player. You all seem to be having a good time, which is fun.

I appreciate the kind words from most of those of you who received and were able to play the CD, but most of you sent me PMs or emails so I'm not getting the public acclaim (patronizing though it may be). I expressed a desire in an earlier message to hear "...from the rest of you, preferably here rather than via PM. I'm still sending them out free to any Mudcatters willing to listen."

There are still a small handful of recipients from whom I have yet to hear and one to whom I have as yet been unable to provide a disk because of his failure to get through to me regarding a time we might share some curry.

If there are still some out there who have received the disk but whose CD players won't play it, try it in your computer. That seems to work--particularly if you have peripheral speakers or earphones. I don't know why this happens--they are not supposed to be MP3s, and the disk plays fine on my 15 year old cheapo Casio all-in-one audio system.
