08 Mar 09 - 10:54 AM (#2583862) Subject: Themed CD's of Traditional Songs From: Sleepy Rosie Over the last few weeks I've accidentally aquired or otherwise been introduced to a small shambolic miscellany of themed folk song CD's: One a collection of 'Sailors Songs and Sea Shanties' from my father who couldn't get on with it, another a collection of Celtic folk songs with magical themes called 'The Fairy Dance' (!) initially from bluddy Past Times of all places (including a great abridged version of Tam Lin that I've never seen anywhere), another was Chumbawumbas' 'English Rebel Songs', and most recently Anne Briggs 'Bird in the Bush' a collection of erotic folk songs. I've found these CD's quite interesting as introductions to different types of traditional song, so I wondered what others here might recommend as good little introductory collections on CD, of equivalently themed folk songs? |

Tony Engle, Reg Hall, Shirley Collins and others are currently working on another set basd on the recordings made by the late Peter Kennedy and to be called Voice of the People 2 |

I've heard some of these recordings on a sampler. And while I suspect I shan't invest in the entire twenty discs just yet, I have earmarked 'My Father's the King of the Gypsies' and 'You Lazy Lot of Bone Shakers' as looking like they could be of particular interest. |

There was a weaving one put out by a female singer some years back. Maritime--Victory sings at sea..and a newer one aimed to save the Wawona (oops, too late). Some Manchester based friends of mine would love the Lancashire Songs. And on a tangent is there an equivalent collection of songs from East Anglia? Anglo: "Thing is, it sort of depends on what themes you might be interested in." Well, I guess I'm not all that sure until I see them, or have them reccomended to me. I'm sure there are LOTS of themed collections out there, what I'm interested in is hearing of other peoples *favourites.* Though collections of traditional songs of seasonal celebration might be very interesting. Which I think is approximately what 'You Lazy Lot of Bone-Shakers' covers. |

09 Mar 09 - 05:22 AM (#2584441) Subject: RE: Themed CD's of Traditional Songs From: Jim Carroll I have no idea if they ever made it to CDs but Library of Congress issued an entire album of versions of Barbara Allen (edited by Charles Seeger) Some of their early LPs are totally themed, 'Assassination of Presidents' 'Miners and Railwaymen', Sea songs, Songs of the Mormons - some wonderful stuff. My own favourite themed album is the old Folkways on 'The Unfortunate Rake' which is completely made up of versions of Sailor/Soldier, Cowboy Cut down. Jim Carroll |

Look under English and especially albums on the Veteran label itself. Also (shameless self-promotion warning) For your East Anglian collection I can't resist pointing you at Fenlandia and Cold Fen which both include a generous helping of songs collected in Cambridgeshire and only recently reconstituted into singable form. On regional themes, was The Muckram Wakes' A Map of Derbyshire ever re-released as a CD? (The Wakes were Roger and Helen Watson and John Tams). Some great stuff on that. I seem to recall another LP I had called A Kentish Garland, by a band called Tundra, but I can't remember what's on that one. Wish I had a way to play vinyl these days. C |

Weird thing is, I've no idea how I came by it, and no recollection of owning it hitherto. Even weirder is Frankie Armstrong's Anglicised version of King Orfeo, and the inclusion of Peter Bellamy's singing of Al Stewart's Nostradamus. But the ultimate weirdness has to be the bonus track - The Chase Song, essentially Robert Grave's Allansford Pursuit (Go Into a Hare) set to '...the traditional tune of The Twa Corbies...' which is, of course, the Breton tune An Arlach Ar, because TWC has no traditional tune! So much for traditional songs; so much for research! I must say, it's all a bit Past Times... |
