I would like to preface them with a note: this is a Welsh tune, and these are Welsh verses. Carreg has married the two up and produced a lovely piece. It is in the Welsh tradition that you take tunes and find traditional ('floating') verses, which the Welsh call "penillion", that fit and that you like. So, if you ever hear this tune to other words or these words to another tune, it isn't a more, or a less, 'correct' piece, it's just the way the tradition should work. Again, I think all these verses are found in a collection of 100s of folk verses called "Hen Benillion" (Old Verses) collected by TH Parry-Williams. They are simply all numbered individually, and these 4 did not make up one specific song. I imagine that these are 4 which Carreg likes and which held together so they've used them, in this order. I think it's a lovely piece and very much 'in the tradition'. Before the Welsh singer, Siwsi George, passed away, she was working on a CD of songs involving birds. She told me that, over the centuries, the roles played by birds changed. In the 19th & 20th centuries, for instance, blackbirds were the ones who carried love messages and knew 'stuff' in general but in previous years the fashions were different. I know she was looking at the roles of seagulls, owls, magpies, cuckoos, etc. I don't know if there's a manuscript of all her work somewhere; I do know that she'd finished the backing tracks for the CD but never got any farther. I've always had it in my mind that it's a project that all her musician friends should finish on her behalf. Her original intention was to do it in aid of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Anyway, I digress. Hope that helps. sian |
