09 Mar 09 - 08:49 PM (#2585213) Subject: Fear of Flying From: olddude So I just got home from a trip to Wisconsin. Left Buffalo to Chicago to Wisconsin. Well when I left Buffalo and we went to land in Chicago, yup they closed the airport due to bad weather. Well I was on one of those regional jets. You know the ones with the seats about 3 inches wide, and of course the guy sittin next to me is over 350lbs. Now I am not one to care about what anyone does or looks like and he was a nice sort of fellow. But my butt was on about a third of the seat cause you see he didn't fit so he took up my seat also I was hanging out onto the isle. The plane was jammed packed. Well since we couldn't land in Chicago they sent us to Grand Rapids. We landed but we could not get off the plane ... for 5 friggin hours. The large guy next to me brought his own salami so I had that going for me also. I thought I was going to die. Well after the weather cleared we left Grand Rapids and landed in Chicago ... lucky the outgoing flights had been delayed also so I was able to get my flight to wisconsin .. got in the plane sat down ... Right next to me, the same 350 lb salami guy that was next to me from Buffalo .. now what are the odds ... and again my arse was hanging out over the isle cause he didn't fit ... |

09 Mar 09 - 08:54 PM (#2585215) Subject: RE: Fear of Flying From: olddude and I don't blame the big guy, I blame the airlines, what kind of seats are they using anyway. I mean I am squeezed into them and I am 165 lbs go figure, It just seems to me they make em smaller these days or they tore out seats to add more to squeeze more people on the planes |

10 Mar 09 - 12:38 AM (#2585292) Subject: RE: Fear of Flying From: JennieG olddude, a few years ago colleague told me that her adult son was on an international flight and had very little seat room due to the large bloke sitting next to him...he quietly called the flight attendant over and pointed out that he had paid for a seat and didn't have one because he was so squashed....they moved him to another seat. He didn't rant or make a fuss, so perhaps that's why he was moved. I suppose that could only happen if there were spare seats, and there's no guarantee on that. Be thankful your seatmate wasn't eating curry! Cheers JennieG |

10 Mar 09 - 10:57 AM (#2585614) Subject: RE: Fear of Flying From: Jack Campin I have once performed in a play where there was a father and son watching in the front row each taking up two plastic bucket seats. Apparently they were from Alaska. I have wondered about that solution on planes. Would they need a passport for each buttock? |

10 Mar 09 - 08:02 PM (#2586031) Subject: RE: Fear of Flying From: bubblyrat Only ever flown in a jet airplane once in my whole life ( I am 62 this year)-----it was from Amsterdam to London, so only a short flight ( Boeing 727 ).It was OK I guess, but not really my thing: I'll stick to ferry-boats,trains and buses, thanks ! |

10 Mar 09 - 08:17 PM (#2586040) Subject: RE: Fear of Flying From: bubblyrat I suppose that I should point out that I once did a "test flight" in a twin-engine,propellor-driven Naval communication (navigation trainer) aircraft. It was fine until the pilot (Lt.Commander Slatter) decided to do "single engine stalls".Having shut down the starboard Alvis "Leonides" radial piston engine, he then got the airspeed down to around 74 knots before we started falling out of the sky.He repeated the exercise with the port engine shut down also, although he did at least have the decency to re-start the starboard engine first ( he was good like that ).After a bone crunching series of "Hard Landings " to test the main oleo- legs of the undercarriage ( gear), I exited the aircraft, kissed the ground ,and vowed never to fly again,if I could possibly avoid it ! |

10 Mar 09 - 09:01 PM (#2586067) Subject: RE: Fear of Flying From: Don Firth My first commercial flight was in 1955 in a DC-6B (four engine prop) from Seattle to Denver. Nice wide comfortable seats, snacks from time to time, and a lunch of shrimp cocktail, filet mignon, baked potato with fixin's, a veggie, and a slice of cherry pie, along with beverage of choice (including "Would you care for a cocktail before lunch?"). By 1961, the size of the seats on passenger planes had dwindled some, but I took a bus trip from Seattle to Berkeley on a Trailways bus. The seats (unlike Greyhound) were as wide as airline seats, there was an on-board rest room in the back, along with a small lounge with a table. They also had a couple of electric shavers "if any of the gentlemen would like to freshen up before arrival." The Trailways bus also featured a "stewardess" (now that you have to call them "flight attendants," what would you call a stewardess on a bus?), who passed out pillows and blankets to those who wanted them, and sandwiches and coffee periodically. I was amazed! In 1964, I flew down to Berkeley and back (Berkeley Folk Festival). On the way back on a 707, there were only about a dozen passengers on the plane. The stew passed out drinks to those who wanted them. Then she did it again. And again. . . . I flew from Berkeley back to Seattle at about 39,000 feet. But the plane was at about 35,000 feet. . . . The last time I flew, it was from Chicago to Seattle on a DC-10. The seats were almost as wide as those I had encountered on Greyhound buses, and instead of filet mignon, I had one of those little foil bags with five macadamia nuts in it. And . . . oh, yeah, a four ounce paper cup with apple juice in it. Don Firth |

10 Mar 09 - 09:37 PM (#2586080) Subject: RE: Fear of Flying From: Jeri I've never had much of a problem with large people. Mostly, it's some men who are a pain in the ass, and usually it's not butt space but leg space. Some guys need to sit with their knees in different time zones and there's a battle for territory. I've gotten a bit better at winning. Most people get creeped out if the other person doesn't flinch from contact and they give you the space. Having to deal with some guy's salami would be a little too much though. |

With half the folks being on the plus side of ideal weights and airlines reducing the seat size this is gonna be a problem... I used to love to fly commercial... That was back when ya' just got on the friggin' plane, it took off on time and arrived on time... I don't think I would do it again unless it was to the West Coast... That being said, give me an bug smashin' Cesna any day of the week... May be slow but ya' don't gotta be uncomfortable with Mr. Salami... Plus, ya wanta drop into some samll town and see what's what, just do it... But commercial flyin' ain't for me no more... B~ |
