The daycentre for people with learning difficulties that I work with is going to form three "social firms". People will earn money and have said that they will enjoy being able to work like everyone else. I've asked them to come up with names for the 3 businesses which will be a garden centre a sandwhich making business(and conference facility)and a woodwork workshop making simple things like bird tables etc... So far people haven't come up with any names, I think the staff are too busy to do a good discussion with people. I am racking my brains now for ideas.It occurred to me that songs can be a good source for names. Any ideas?They must not be too dificult so that someone with a learning difficulty can relate to it. So far for the garden centre I have thought of under the sun, seasons and little acorns. I'm a bit stuck with the other two. I'm looking through the dictionary and a book of proverbs to get ideas. I know you guys are really clever and literary so see if you can come up with anything. By the way the people who will work in these groups will be voting for their favourite names. thankyou Emmie |

I have worked with people with Learning disabilities for nearly 30 years, and it is so difficult to find a name that they can relate to, is adult, and not childish (we in the buisiness call it age appropriateness). And be aware that someone with speech difficulties can say it. That's why I'm known as Bron rather than use my full name. Peter T's ideas are good, but try saying them with your mouth full, thats how difficult someone with Down's would find it. Where are you, Emmie, I've got clients who would love to improve literacy skills by having a pen-pal. Bron. |

I've also worked with stroke victims, people with cerebral palsy, and people with neonatal brain damage. What Bron says is *so* true. The words must be pronouncable, and not demeaning. Cleverness is nice, because it can help with memorization, and it can please some folks, both the employees and their customers, but it's not essential. I too like Seeds, Crumbs, and Splinters for their simplicity. Greens might work for the garden center, too. Thanks for the challenge... V |

For example, a restaurant or snack could be named MOMUS CAFE (for the so called cafe in Puccini's LA BOHEME, where bohemians used to meet) or LILLAS PASTIA, the name of the smuggler's tavern in Bizet's CARMEN, (from this opera I took my nickname, and because I sing too, non-professionally :)).
