I hope someone posts the words, Chris - I like that song too. Last time I heard it sung was by Danny Kyle and the gang in Glasgow's Tron Theatre, during a memorial night for Josh McCrae, who wrote the song about the Clyde.

Can anyone please tell me who made this record and roughly what year it came out - 50's or 60's? Thanks

I don't know when it was recorded - probably in the late '60's but it is on an album called: I Wanna Sing You A Song, Max Bygraves, MACCD/MC172

More Info Here

Allan C - thanks for info but I'm looking for the guy who made the original record which went into the charts and I'm fairly certain it wasn't Max Bygraves. Thanks anyway. Jenny

Max? Ugh !(great repertoire but best sung by others, I have a great MB piano roll- all the words without his voice, for me to murder, pedalling is good for the thigh muscles too!). My first guess was Robin Hall & Jimmie McGregor but my mind's ear has a soft, slightly Irish, voice like Val Doonican's, not a brash breezy one like Max B.? 1960s would be my guess, rather than '70s. Steve Parkes, Britain's answer to Joe Offer, will probably pin it down- it isn't in my collection.

How about Josh MacRae? It must have been the early Sixties. Hamish Imlach talks about it in his book, but I don't have time to look it up just now.

Definitely early 60s. Something in me shouts "Robin Hall and Jimmie McGregor", but a more rational voice disagrees.

I can hear (mind's ear), the opening bars, with sound effects of oars in rowlocks, and water under the bows of a wooden rowing boat. I can only hear one singer. I wasn't the guy who did England Swings, was it?

Click here to get to that other thread, and lyrics, and tune, and background information. Seems the most credible-sounding allegation is that the song was popularized by Josh Macrae. Never heard the song, myself.

Thanks to everyone on this. Yes, it's Josh Macrae. Don't exactly go a bundle on it but at least I can put an end to my sad friend's continual nagging for the answer. Maybe he should buy a computer and get on-line?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Roger. I will always defer to Joe on Mudcat issues. After all, he's been around a lot longer than me.

Steve

P.S. I saw a poster recently advertising Julie Felix as "the English Joan Baez"!

Didn't think that Julie Feelsick was English in the first place, and in the second place equating her in any way with St Joan, is taking hyperbole to the farthest extent of it's definition.

Julie is Mexican/American. I 'played' with her in the earyt 60's in Germany, Garmisch PatenKirchen. We did the American soldiers camps, she played guitar and sang and I played the bagpipes! Honestly!

Thred creep and Link to Julie FeliX
Still touring and well worth seeing and meeting, I saw about 3 years ago in a church hall in Methil (Fife, I was led to believe that her previous gig to Methil was the Albert Hall in London.
