"NO PARKIG" I saw this sign outside someone's house. I was dying to leave a note asking if their cold was better!

Not misspelt but a sign to chill the blood:(seen at a garden gate backing on to a towpath on the Basingstoke canal near Mytchett):"Beware of the dog. Stand still if challenged"

I have seen "Garag Sale" and "Gong Out of Business" signs. Most of us have seen the often used trick of misspelling part of a sign like "Used Ferniture" or something like that. They often produce surprisingly good results in customer traffic because of those folks who can't resist going into the store and informing the proprietor of the "error". But I doubt that the parking sign was of this category.

My favorite sign is not misspelled but I like it just the same. It indicates a small country road named, "Pinch Her Slyly".

I was on a small island in the Azores called San Miguel which is considered a Portuguese island. In the main town, in the middle of the square is a large statue of an imposing angel. At the base of the statue was the name of the angel "SANTMICHODEARCANGO" "SANT" "MICHO" "DE" "ARC" "ANGO". I'm not kidding. I thought it was great.

Beautiful island, great people. Very inexpensive to be there.

Forgive me for being scatalogical (blame it on Catspaw) but I have in my possession a photo that I took outside a motel in Plattsburg NY. Their sign says "AFTER DINNER RELAX IN OUR HEATED POO". I kid you not.

OK, so it's not a sign but I must get one last weak "joke" in before I go off on leave: headline in today's press "EU attacks Gibraltar bottleneck".
Does that mean Mississippi [I can spell Mississippi, I just don't know when to stop] Fred McDowall and Elmore James wouldn't be allowed to play a Spanish Guitar?

Speaking of pools, when I was married and owned a house, a 100 years ago, I had a large swimming pool in our yard. I put a sign up for my Grandchildren. It said:

"We call this an 'ool'. Do you know why? "'Cause there's no 'P' in it." "Let's keep it that way,OK?"

I eventually gave the pool (it was an above ground pool) to my daughter and her family. They still call it an "ool".

I realise I didn't write what "SANTMICHODEARCANGO" was suppose to represent. I don't know if this is true, it's pure speculation, but I think what may have happened was some well meaning missionaries came there and tried to teach the resident islanders about "Micheal the Arch Angel". Not speaking English, they misspelled the name on the statue.

I could be wrong, but I cannot think of another scenerio.

When we lived in Vermont, just up the village road from us there lived an elderly (75? doesn't seem so elderly to me now) retired farmer and his equally elderly wife. They thought they might take advantage of the passing tourist traffic and put up a crudely hand-lettered sign: "ANTICS." I tried to visualize them in the midst of such, but failed.

Well, it's not a misspelling story, but there's one sign that stands out in my memory:

A few years ago, upon entering Georgia just south of Chattanooga, we turned off for a bite to eat in Fort Oglethorpe (also the location of Chickamauga Battlefield).

We'd been noticing for some time the masses of kudzu vines covering everything--electric poles, trees, billboard stanchions, you name it--it was ubiquitous.

Driving along the little road leading to Ft. Oglethorpe, I noticed a small sign, itself a mass of vines, along the side of the road. Barely visible through the kudzu leaves was the legend Kudzu Control Area

Unless urban redevopment has removed it, there was an intersection in Rochester, New York, sort of between the main library and the Xerox Tower, of Stone Street and Climax Alley. This was immortalized on a tee shirt back in the early 1970's by a folkie photographer as part of a class assignment at Rochester Institute of Technology. In Greensboro NC - "Entrance up Frunt", and "Come on in, We Got Everthing". All over NJ - live bate, liv bait, knight crawlers,- apparently, bait advertisements are supposed to be misspelled.

In Edinburgh many years ago there was a shop at the bottom of Leith Walk with a beautiful gilded window sign reading "Videos for all ocassions". There were so many spelling mistakes in professionally made signs in Edinburgh in these days that I am convinced to this day that signwriting firms were pressured to hire dyslexics.

While installing cabinets in the new DHSS Centre in Livingston in the 70's , I witnessed a large plastic lettered sign being erected which read "Data Preperation Unit". Ten days later I was finishing up my work and the sign was still there. I asked the Clerk of Works when it would be changed, and he stared at it and asked what was wrong with it.

I am aware that some people consider spelling words correctly to be a sign of pedantry. If that is so, I am a pedant and proud of it.

John, with piss-poor construction like that, I have to leap to Murray's defence. Where it's sheer bloody laziness that is evident, I think it is a graphic insult. Genuine dyslexia notwithstanding, missed apostrophes (weve, youve), missed spaces (weve, youve) and missed commas (Murray weve)give Murray every reason to rail against sloppy scribbling.

As much as this may surprise Murray (as the pedant jibe was actually mine!), I am equally pedantic and proud of it. However, John, I don't want to upset you, so I apologise immediately for the harsh words above. This is a running sore in Mudcat, and I don't want to inflame it even more. This is a musical community, and poor command of grammar or the written word shouldn't bar any contributor, but, to me at least, laziness is much worse than ignorance.

I was taught the importance of the correct useage of commas through humour. Ceasar entered on his head, his helmet on his feet, his sandals in his hand, his sword in his eye, an angry glare.

On one it was called 'Cannard's Well Inn', on the other it was called 'Cannard's Grave Inn'. I always wondered what happened to the sign in between. The one that should read 'Cannard's Feeling Extremely Unwell Inn'. When they re-furbished the pub a while back, all the signs became 'Cannard's Grave Inn'.

Whenever I was particularly depressed about something I'd do a 'spelling bee' on him. Bless him, he can really cheer a girl up!!! You wouldn't believe the letters that ended up the word 'station'. It's now a 'tourist attraction' and hired out for parties etc. Someone hired it out just for himself over Christmas/New Year 1999/2000 to escape the Millennium celebrations.

In its days of real secrecy, it was very, very secret. The entrance to the vast underground network is through an assuming bungalow. The only thing slightly bizarre about it is that it is a typical suburban bungalow, normally found in the Acacia Avenues of this world, but all on its own in the middle of a wood.

Kinda funny that it was wrong on both sides yet in different ways! Made me giggle!

They don't teach spelling anymore in schools. That's what spell check is for. Sad.

Every school I've ever taught in has attempted to teach spelling. Maybe the schools in the US are different?

That's so Anne - and when I taught for 30 years 50s-80s we certainly did. But one of beefs I hear & read of these days is that spelling is scarcely if at all taken into account in all these far too many exams the poor young people are incessantly lumbered with these days. It was not so when Mike did reign and this old hat was new...

They have changed it since but at a parking lot (car park) near me there was a sign: 'State of Alaska Emplyee Parking Only'.

I am currently living in the heart of the downtown pub action; I see more nightlife than I need.

On the window of one bar is a sign announcing a trivia contest and wine tasting night. It says: Test your Brain and Your Pallet'.

When I was in school even your geography tests required proper spelling.

I see it as more "dumbing down" of America. People who say, "like" every three or four words, or "Nome sane" lose my interest very quickly. Language was created so we can understand each other so, without proper spelling and grammar we are left with a guessing game for which I have no time.

In my rebellious youth I decided to ostentasiously disobey all signs telling to do or not to something. Outside a neighbour's house there appeared a sign bearing the legend..'No Parking'. As I didn't have a car I was stymied in my attempts to disobey....until a brainwave. I painted the P into a B, then barked loudly, like a dog, every time I passed the house.

In NZ, they paint subsidiary signs on the road approaching things such as road junctions. They paint them in the order that you approach them, such as 'GIVE' followed by 'WAY." When the road has a slight incline so that you can see both messages, it reads 'WAY GIVE" in the normal way, top to bottom.

During the late '50s/early '60s in the Brighton/Hove (UK) area there were traffic signs, small blue rectangles with the wording "Police Notice. No parking". A large building in the Hove area, possibly a private hotel, had very similar home-made signs "Polite Notice. No parking".

I saw a sign this summer that read " Frig for sale"
I resisted the urge to go in...

There used to be a famous sign on a laundry on the way to West Ham United's ground - 'Don't Kill Your Wife - Let Us Do It For You'!

The late John Hillaby (walker/author) wrote that he saw a sign in a bathroom in a B & B, next to a river where a fishing contest was under way:

ANGLERS MUST NOT WET THEIR WORMS IN THE BATH

(From "Journey Through England" - excellent book, don't know if you can still get it but it'll be on Abebooks on the Web if it's out of print)

Sorry, I meant "Journey through Britain"; how could I forget Ben Mhor Assynt? It was a book about a walk from Lands End to John O'Groats avoiding motor roads where possible.

Just remembered one spotted outside a gate in County Mayo - 'No Parkin'. Presumably the owners had something against Yorkshire confections.
