BS: Hockey: Stanley Cup 2009 (08-09 Season)

OK, the other hockey thread for the year got a bit full-- would someone kindly add links to old hockey threads-- so here's a fresh one for this year's Cup run.

My TEAM is the Pens but that ain't my PICK, if ya knowhaddeyemeen. (My PICK is our ECHL team to get into the second round of THEIR cup run!) :~)

You?

BTW I noted a new NHL.com feature this year-- I don't much like the "improved" site otherwise-- a playoffs-if-they-were today screen that shows all the matchups. I imagine it will morph to this year's playoff updates.

I still don't know the Western Conference as well as the East-- what looks realistic, to Catters, about the West shake-outs to toward the Cup?

I pick the Wings, too. They've returned to last year's form. Osgood is posting better numbers. And now that Downey is back in the lineup to grind, the bigger teams aren't as much of a threat.

Looking for teams to peak at the right time you can't discount the Canucks! 11 in a row at home and Luongo is playing great!

And when I come back to earth, it's a Boston-Detroit final!

Some day I'll get to say "GO LEAFS GO"!(then I'll have to add "Honky The Christmas Goose and "Clear the track, here comes Shack" to my i-pod!

I always enjoy the "Buy Penguins Tickets Now" ads that run during game the Pens are losing. Apparently they kick this strategy up a notch at the end of the season: Last night we watched a losing double-header. The ads featured playoff tix going on sale Tuesday.... fire sale? ;~)

My son and a friend of his(the kid I went and refereed with in Niagara Falls two weekends ago)travelled to Pittsburgh for a game just before his birthday in October(not a Leaf game). Got their first real taste of the sometimes not so subtle differences between American and Canadian hockey fans. I don't think I'll elaborate too much on their experiences. The exception I'll make is to say that they thought like in the movie "The Untouchables" when the Judge exchanged the jury in his court with the courtroom next door, the fans they were surrounded by had been exchanged for fans of ping pong. They figure they were amongst about 100 Japanese tourists. From the guy sitting behind them; "Why whistle?".....Offside! "What offside?"....Player crossed that blueline before the puck did! This went on for almost every whistle during the first period. During intermission, my son went and purchased a small, cartoon like, rule book for dummies type pamflet, from one of the souvenir stands. He got a pen and wrote a little blap in it. "From a Canadian Hockey Fan, Pittsburgh U.S.A. October 16/08". The guy said "Thank-You. We here on Tuesday, guy tell me to shut-up! This same thing...EH!".

O.k., o.k., so I'm over here now and will let my thread die. I swear I looked for this thread but couldn't find it, so...

Well, in the first round my guys will be taking on the Blue Jackets; which leads me to ask a question: has anyone been getting emails pushing tickets from a team that they do not support? I have been getting them from the Blue Jackets and I LIVE IN TEXAS! I have never been to their website, nor have I contacted them for anything -
go figure. I just keep deleting the Blue Jackets stuff; which, by-the-way, is what the RED WINGS will be doing to them starting Thursday evening.

Let's have some fun and see where this year goes.
Cheers from Hockeytown South. GO RED WINGS!

A couple of questions here about hockey on t.v. Are there any Catters who subscribe to the Hockey Channel, and if so, what are your thoughts on it pro and con; and, are there any Catters who get a cable or satellite service that feature stations like FSN Detroit, or FSN Southwest, etc. I am thinking of getting a service that offers FSN Detroit as one of it's channels but I'm told by a friend that I will not be able to get the Red Wings games, but only the pre-game and post-game shows, etc. Any knowledge about that anyone?
Thanks for any feedback.

I like the Sharks for the West. They've had a strong team for a few years. They've been very good all this year. But of course the Wings will be strong.

I don't think the Bruins have the experience for a long run in the playoffs. The East really seems up for grabs. Of course I'll be cheering for the Carolina team. But I'll enjoy watching the young guns in Pittsburgh and Washington.

As well, I mentioned this a few years ago that for a sport that has lots of fighting, this is about the only thread since it's inception that no bickering has taken place. Respect is great.

Beer, thanks for the civility reminder I forgot to insert in the first post. I have found over the several years we've been doing thse here that informal, friendly PMs to people new to that dynamic have been received well and I hope those of y'all who have enjoyed that dynamic will feel free to sending them as well rather than getting drawn into any "serious" trash-talk.

My own model, here, is the civility that allows fans of opposing teams to enjoy a game along the glass, in person. You don't stop cheering your own team on, just because a seat-mate may be wearing the WORST team jersey in the WORLD, but you try not to spark an alcoholically-inspired "chat" with the security personnel! :~)

And I renew the invitation to Gather at our place at any point in the playoffs. Camping space, beer fridge, and pub dog available.

Playoff schedule (Looks like the first two games didn't go so well for Montreal.)
There are also pictures of skinny (not all parts) women in small bathing suits there. I was pretty sure you wouldn't want to look at that sort of thing, though.

For the record, I haven't ever really recognized the existence of hockey until this thread. I think I might have issues stemming from trying to have some fun skating with friends while some numb-nuts guys (who we went there with) were whacking a puck around at the public rink, and I suspect they were aiming at us.

Hey Beer - you're right, they are your Wings too, and we're happy about that. Hey, here's a "heads up" for all the Catters here.
I may be behind everyone in "tech knowledge," but I went ballistic yesterday when I saw that Versus was not televising game two of the
Wings/Blue Jackets series; I checked my entire cable line-up and found - NO RED WINGS. Out of frustration I called a Detroit radio station and was told where I could listen to the game on-line and then the guy told me that I could "watch" the game on-line as it was streamed in. Bingo - it worked. No, it's not like watching it on TV, but you get the audio broadcast clear as a bell with the streaming video, plus replays, interviews and post-game shows.

I'm not certain because I was only looking for the RED WINGS, but I would believe that every hockey game is available to be viewed. At any rate, the web-site is: justintv.com, and it's a God-send when the bozo's don't carry your team. How can you not show every game that the defending champions are playing? Sure, I'm biased, but
come on now. Try out the site and let us know what you think, and...GO RED WINGS - KEEP THE CUP!          mwh - Hockeytown South

Thanks for the tip Michael, I will try and see if it works better than what I use from the Red Wing Home Page. Which is: TV: FS-D (HD), Radio: 97.1 FM
However, when I'm listening to the game I loose connection to often and have to start again. Pain in the butt. It is better than no wings though as I don't have all those sports stations that most sport fans have.

Beer - I have a cousin who lives down here and he gets "FSN Detroit"
as one of the channels on his "Direct TV," satellite package; but, he says that he gets everything but the games. I'm wondering if that is universal or what. Given that the strike of a few years ago drove away a lot of potential fans (as well as ESPN broadcasting) wouldn't you think that Bozo Bettman would be giving games away as opposed locking them up on the NFL network. Go figure.

Yes, I too listen on 97.1 when all else fails, but it tears me apart to know they're playing and I can neither see, nor hear the action.

I may have mentioned this if a by gone post. When I was living in Nova Scotia I use to pick up WJR Detroit and listen to their games on a.m radio. About 10 years ago I was traveling in Newfoundland and was listening to a Detroit hockey game on WJR. Wish the hell they had of kept it going. The think about Hockey (maybe all sports)is that you can be doing other things while listening to and picturing in your mind the game.
Love it.

Beer, I think you're right. I think the Wings came out tonight and there just wasn't any pressure on them, but they came through in the end. A fluke penalty? Maybe, but the Versus commentators all agreed that it had to be called. Besides, the Stanley Cup playoffs are often about fluke goals and other flukey stuff; in the end though, the guys still had to score the last goal - and they did.
Right now the Ducks are giving the Sharks hell. See you all in the second round - GO RED WINGS, KEEP THE CUP! Cheers,.........mwh

Van vs St L! I think was a no-brainer! Det vs Colum was too! As was Bos vs Mon! (No bleu and blanc, no bleu, blanc en rouge! Next year!)

Pitt, advanced as they should have. But been a Philly fan since 1973!

Cal vs Chi, "Don't make me angry! You won't like me when I'm angry!" Could be decider!

Wash vs NY, The Avery-Tortorella factor! If %$#&^%# Avery plays, they win!

NJ vs Car, he ain't heavy, he's my Brodeur!

SanJ vs Ana, scares me!

Capitals and Hurricanes win

As the top seed, Boston gets to face the lowest seed remaining--Carolina. That sets up a second-round showdown between Washington and Pittsburgh.

Matchups:

No. 2 Washington vs. No. 4 Pittsburgh

Vancouver vs Chicago WAS wild, last night. Vancouver was running off with a shutout till the Hawks made a 2nd-intermission adjustment and roared back to a 3-3 tie. One little booboo though and Vancouver scored on them right at the end,m plus an empty-netter. Bet they'd been scared shitless by the near miss!

If one was to look it up, you'd see that most of his minutes spent in the "sin bin" were for retaliatory type penalties. In his early years, he was no Jean Beliveau. Well, the NHL is still a useless enforcer. No suspension for Brown?
Nonsense, simply nonsense. That was a cheap-shot, gutless hit he put on Hudler and the league needs to stop this shit from happening again and again,...and why in the hell is Bertuzzi still playing?
He should have been permanently suspended years ago.

Now I'm going to be a real ass____ and say that someone needs to deck Brown in tomorrows game. What the hell, if the league won't stop it then the players need to take it to the next level to where the suits cannot ignore it any longer. Of course, you could fire Bettman, too, and bring in a real hockey guy to run the league; maybe a guy with a name like Yzerman, or Gretzky, you know, someone who might have PLAYED the game!

I must stop my bitching about Crosby, Crosby, Crosby and Ovechkin.
It seems that the Versus folks ran a poll asking about the second round match-up that will be most appealing - Pens/Caps won out over the Wings/Ducks 41% to 27%, so give the people what they want and I'll find my guys on-line somewhere - or the radio.

The Wings have got their hands full with the Ducks and I don't much care for Rafalski being out - a major player for the Wings. Nick is picking up any slack that appears and continuing to prove his greatness time after time. God, I love this game, and the Red Wings.

Yeah, Susan & Beer, that was as fine a game as it gets; but, I have to ask the question - are Crosby and Ovechkin the only scorers on those teams? Also, when in the third period it was tied at two apice, Ovechkin scored twice on two shots that Fleury had a clear sight line on; Kelly and I just sat there and looked at each other in disbelief. Are we on another planet? Shouldn't Fleury have had one or both of those?

Ovechkin is entertaining to watch as he often gets as excited as a child on Christmas morning. And Crosby, in that third period when he scored his hat-trick goal - his tenacity on that play where he whacked that puppy three, four or five times before it finally went in, was really on the money; great stuff.

Two questions about hat-tricks: is this the first game where two players have scored hat-tricks; and, if so, how common is it? And, I thought that hats were thrown regardless of who scored the trick, your player, or theirs; however, there was only one hat launched in honor of Crosby's third goal. You know, about the time I think that I know a little something about the game, I realize that I do know - a little,...and a little ain't much. Two more tomorrow. Cheers, and,...GO RED WINGS GO!..........................mwh

1. Away hat tricks are always less hatful, but the record book is the record book.

2. We talk in terms of shoe tricks at our ECHL games-- toss shoes if the trick is an opponent's.

3. The Crosby thing. I have a lot to say there. Work with me here--

What bothers me most about Sid-worship is that it leaves a young kid without proper coaching. You cannot mold what you worship.

Specifically, Sid and his linemates. The established pattern is that potential linemates do great the first week or two, with Sid. Then their scoring drops off sharply and a schneid develops. This morning, I think I know why and how.

When they first arrive they are inspired and Sid is hopeful. They elevate their game without quite knowing how. He simplifies his. They meet in the middle. Magic happens. The coach is thrilled.

Then Sid quite naturally gets itchy to have even more fun, more magic-- he's a kid! He starts to fancy up his game. He has the talent for it, and the youth. They don't. The scoring begins to drop off.

This freaks out everyone. They all TRY HARDER.

The downward spiral accelerates-- everyone tried harder and it works less and less, as confidence plummets. Eventually that affects Sid's playing as well, and his goals vanish, too.

During the whole thing you hear the exact same things from Sid. His comments, while appearing to be reasonable and mature, are less and less accurate and relevant as this spiral descends.

How can you have a kid as the Team Captain if he cannot fathom the world of the skilled journeyman, because he has never been one?

He would need to simplify his own game, and then raise his expectations of the linemates and stop making allowances for what he must logically know is a talent gap.

He needs to be able to assess what they might actually be able to do, and then expect one level above that.

I think your assessment is very good Susan. The one thing I cannot understand is why they made him Captain. I think if they had waited a few years first would have made a difference. As you say and others, he is still a kid. He also shows his emotions way to much. In a negative way. Not when he scores but when he is not playing or the team is not playing well. He was very obvious in last years match up with Detroit. If I was Washington I would go after the kid and get him really upset. I think that this would work in the Caps favor.IMHO.

Again, I want to emphasize-- I do not blame him for all this, but the coach, GM, and OWNER/landlord for sublimating their own hockey dreams into Sid-worship such that a really good kid is left to carry the weight he cannot, in fact, carry.

It's also not Sid who seeks the NHL-marketing spotlight, the Ovechkin rivalry, etc.

He's like a child movie star who will not quite see how this has hurt him until later.

Susan - I think we are much closer to agreement about hockey than we are apart; and, I agree with Beer - Sid should not be the captain, it would've been better to have a solid veteran wear the "C" for several reasons that have been mentioned here.

I blame "hockey" for putting Sid where he is, and by that I mean mostly Bettman. I think he was looking for an NHL version of Kobe, but for me - I don't like it. There are too many excellent players in the NHL and fans, and potential fans, need to know that there are more than one or two teams to watch for excitement.

I'll miss a lot of players here but I'll start with my guys: Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Hossa, Lidstrom; then Campbell and Taews; then Luongo; then Pronger, Getzlaf; then Thornton; then Iginla and CheeChoo, and on, and on, and on. Finally, IMHO, if the league were going to put it's success on the shoulders of one guy, I would rather see them do it with Ovechkin because he's already "out there," and personally, I think he can handle it - probably better than anyone else in the league; but again, the league should be giving away games on television and talking about how great the whole league is and not just one or two players.

Hey - time to get ready for tonight. GO RED WINGS - EAT DUCKS!

Yes, yes.

Here is one aspect of how it is so DUMB: that Versus poll, where Crosby/Ovie was said to be the most-wanted matchup? So then they market that MORE, and so of course it polls higher and then they market it some more and then it polls higher-- gimme a break!

I mean, Little Hawk proved THAT strategy with his Shatner threads. Just the constant mention created an "icon" (LH's stated goal) out of someone we mostly don't even actually WATCH.....

So I say make Shatner the poster boy for hockey! :~) Or LH-- serve him right! :~)

"Well folks, again, it shows how little I know of hockey rules; I mean, if the referee blows his whistle after the puck has already gone over the goal line - why is that not a goal? I don't get it?"

As an on-ice-official, I can answer that question!

First of all, having to make a split-second decision in the fastest game on the planet, is not as easy as it sounds! We don't skate around with our whistles in our mouths(or anywhere else). On any given play, an official must determine whether or not the whistle should be blown. Then they have to put the whistle in their mouth without chipping a tooth(happened to me). Finally blowing the whistle and make the right signal(wave off frantically)!

In this case, the referee has lost sight of the puck and has made the decision to blow his whistle for that reason.

So, what do you think the new team in Halifax should be called? I say The Halifax Privateers will be the name that wins, if they have a contest, if they get a team.

There is talk about town that Moncton would be a great location for a CFL or NHL team, but I doubt it. Maybe a CFL team... maybe... nah. People yap it up because of the crowds we get for concerts like The Stones, ACDC, Bon Jovi, Elton John... But those are oneoffs. Not gonna draw a regular crowd big enough for the CFL or NHL.

threefer,

OK, here are a couple of older threads that focused specifically on questions. Can you take a look (and answer there not here) anything that warn't covered right?

BS: Hockey - Plus and Minus?

BS: NHL: help on hockey stick rules

There MIGHT have been some questions in other hockey threads, but we have been running one each year for the regular season (that gets really long), and then one for the playoffs. I don't have time today to go comb through the older ones and I would not dream of imposing on your time to ask you to do it and then, on top of that, answer them.

In general, I think it would be best to keep questions in other threads, and keep this one for Cup-talk.

Anyway-- only answer what you feel comfortable tackling. This should still be a place of recreation for you, and not a place to answer for every hockey policy people like to argue over.

Thanks! I think I can see now why you might have appreciated the reduction in trash talk-- I am sure I know what you more usually hear through the glass-- but gosh, doesn't that leave you with no place to express it yourself?!?!?! (PM trash anytime, any team, mine several included.)

Cool. I guess I just grew up with it so I know the rules. Of course, this is playoff time, so the rules can actually ebb and flow a bit. Up to the Refs. And, DEFINITELY not an easy job to "feel" the situation... let em play or call everything? Tough stuff.

I think it would be GREAT to have a permanent hockey "question and answer, discussion" thread that would be separate from the "regular season" and "cup" threads. Having said that, I just don't have time for it now because the Red Wings won last nite in fine fashion; and, since they (NBC nor Versus) are not to be televising Game 5 of the Red Wings game on Sunday (well, not down in Hockeytown South, anyway)
I've got to spend all my time finding a satellite bar that will be showing the game; or, just going nuts until Sunday when I can go on line and scramble to find a streaming video broadcast or a radio station that is carrying the game. Life is tough for hockey fans.

I gotta stop going to nhl.com early in the morning. This morning, I read that one series is tied at 2 to 1 after the last game in which the score was 7 to 5 in the first OT. Methinks the admins are enjoying too many brown pops whilst watching the games. Oh... next game in that series is scheduled for last night.

I watched the Ducks Wings t'other night. Great hockey! Real hockey.... skating, strategy, finesse... like I said, some chippy but it was minor and behind the play.

Last night I watched the Penguins Caps... thuggery, penalties, chippy crap over and over... I mean, cross checking a guy trying to get up off the ice in front of the net when the puck is 30' away?? And, no penalty??? Does anyone else find such offensive?

I know I asked about the Bing Cherry thing, but the officiating and the play and the coaching I saw last night were ludicrous to me. It was a waste of my time to watch it. Piss poor!

The Bing comment was actually a tasty treat here, gnu, but may I say somehting else.... and yes I saw a lotta crap last night, hard to sort out.... I responded to your no-nhl-mornings idea below, myself, by going over to Hockey Canada's website to see just what 3refs' frame of reference is.... I came to the conclusion that it's important we remember that 3refs is a hockey pal, here at Mudcat hockey threads, first and foremost, and I hope we can all agree that he's not responsible for NHL decision-making, policies, etc.... we need to be sure we do not put a fellow hockey-pal in an awkward situation.

This may be one of few places where a ref in any league can just "be," eh, and there may be some questions he might not address.

Agreed.... hey... everyone is human. BUT, it still pisses me off that cross checking a man in the short ribs while he is on the ice in plain view of a ref is not called. Matter of fact, if I had been reffing, there would have been a double penalty with interference added. And that was not the only incident... on both sides.

Sorry for the rant, but, I'm just sayin.... PLAY hockey!

Sigh... Canucks play at 11:30PM my time tonight.

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey: Stanley Cup 2009 (08-09 Season)
From: wysiwyg

Yes, I know.... I like to try to keep in mind that the league reviews it ALL. It's not just up to the refs on the ice. At the War Room they can add their own little opportunities for justice. Sometimes we even get to hear about them.

One example-- take the Ovechkin/Gonchar knee hit. If OvieWanGoalobie had hit Gonchar's healing shoulder, that would have been one clear intent to injure. If he had done a hit like he did on either of the D-men assigned to impede his availability to receive passes, same conclusion. From one camera angle of what he did, same conclusion.

From another angle.... uh.... I love my Pens, but I have to admit it was too fast, at that angle, even with slo-mo (over and over), to be sure.... and I dunno what the refs' angles of view were, or what each ref's eyes were actualy looking at in that instant.....

The mind boggles. So I have to say that using the camera to support or overturn the on-ice officials' view seems, to me, the only practical way to go about it.

After an hour of intermission-time, I came to think that the best league decision would be a stiff fine to Ovechkin (and maybe the coach) with a strongly-crafted and legally-delivered warning. He IS a marquee player. Is any league REALLY going to rush to totally change the marketing imnage of a marquee player, with a hasty decision?

Could a ref have been unsure what to do? Might cooler heads prevail after a morning meeting wrestling with it? I look forward to updates-- and another game, tonight.

Try it this way-- can you really see fans understanding how, overnight, Alexander Ovechkin becomes Sean Avery?

That's just ONE of a million or more "moments" the on-ice officials had to address. I would not want their job for ANY money. And without their willingness to attempt the job, we would not have our beloved sport to enjoy.

Checks and balances are a bitch, eh.

Understood... but, re, "If OvieWanGoalobie had hit Gonchar's healing shoulder..."... ya can't expect a player in the heat of the game to let up on a check bcause someone has a "healing injury". If they are that fragile, they should not be playing.

The secret is being consistent! You can put the hammer down and wreck a really good hockey game because you end up calling what is referred to as "The Standard". I get alot of "You let em play" whenever I get supervised. What they mean is "You could have filled the box up all night long with little shit, but no majors where missed or needed to be called".

Ovetchkin's knee! Glad I didn't have to make that decision. The fact that it was unitentional would have been a consideration in deciding how many games I would have suspended him. 1 for sure!

I heard about Datsyuk's "over the net" pass but didn't see it until today on YouTube. I've never seen anything like it - anyone see it when it happened? Did the announcers go nuts over it? The replay is just amazing and I'm certain it will be a new color, not only on Pavel's palette, but across the NHL. What a fantastic move! I'm really looking forward to game six tomorrow night and hope we can close it out. Looks like there might be a rematch - Pens & Wings; of course, the Bruins may have something to say about that. There are some health concerns with beer I will not go into, but recently we were able to reintroduce it in small quantities. Hardi bought porter. Being too tired to fetch it last night for the half=glass each we can have, we comforted ourselves thus: the new tradition will be "no beer till they get into the playoffs, and then one ritual six-pack of very good stuff per series."

= No new sixpack till they earn their way into the next series. So no beer unless they win #7 and start the next. Hardi will buy.

Thanks, Boberino, but....

The problem is.... that as an "RCF," (recovering Chicago fan, all sports), I know that the flipside of your reassuring mindset is part of my path to sure, hoodwinked destruction. "We can still win this thing" is the mantra of many a heart-crushed Chicagoan as we go down to the dust. Even as the Bulls and the Bears celebrated the championship wins they DID finally achieve, that was still the mantra, with its "maybe next year" echo in counterpoint.

So I cannot, as a RCF, if I really want to aim for total wellness, allow myself the start thinking that the Pens/Caps record means a damn thing. The TVblatters were FULL of assurances last night that no game-6-elimination-game had even been won by the Caps, and then, of course, they DID.

See our struggle? And beerlessly.

I sure hope they come out storming in the third or it's back to the Joe on Thursday; which, really stinks for me (selfishness here, to be sure)as I've got a show that day at 5pm, my daughter's senior choir dinner at 6:30pm, senior choir performance (her solo) at 7:30pm - and the Red Wings will be playing elimination game #7 at the same time. Well, I'm just going to have to leave the choir performance early enough to catch the third period. Damn it! It's not fair! Of course, in a few minutes the guys could come out storming, sustain it for twenty minutes, and kick hell out of the Ducks. GO RED WINGS! Cheers,..........mwh

Game 7 can be new territory for many!

"I've watched a lot of Game 7s, but this will be my first one," Crosby said before his team headed off to Washington where it will meet the Capitals tonight at the Verizon Center.

"I've never played one in juniors -- or any level."

Hockey Night in Canada's Ron MacLean once described Game 7 as "the two most exciting words in sport."

"There are few sporting events as compelling as a Game 7 in the N.H.L. playoffs. Maybe the final round of a golf major, but that depends who's in the running. Certainly not do-or-die games in the baseball postseason, many of which end around sunrise EST. Super Bowls amount to corporate schmaltz, with the continuity of the contest destroyed by the glut of advertising. Some prefer the N.B.A. playoffs. But, no, not me. Give me a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs, any round, any teams, with the season hanging on every rush up ice, every goalmouth scrum."
Stu Hakcel

Vegas odds on the Caps winning tonight: 1 in 3...

I'd say that it very optomistic for the Caps...

WYSuzie,

Ain't no jinx on yer beloved Penguins, who BTW had beaten the Caps every playoff series, except 1 (that's one) going back to the days of Columbus and the flat earth...

I'm not watching the game 'cause it's a Washington, D.C> sports team in a playoff... That means that 99.99999% of the time the Washington sports team looses...

Talk about a jinx...

Try growin' up around here!!!

Watch baseball steal not one, but 2, of yer teams... Watch 30 years of crappy basketball teams... 20 years and counting of crappy football teams...

The only good news is that we went 30 years without a crappy baseball team 'cuase we didn't have baseball for 30 years... Or was it 40 years... Prolly closer to 40...

So ya'll gloat about how great the mighty Penguins are...

Who cares???

I told ya'll that it was gonna go like this... Believe me... We folks 'round D.C. know the deal...

The Caps would have lost to Helen Keller... lol...

Well, there is a silver lining about being a Washington, DC sprts fan and that is alot more time to rake leaves, mow grass, shovel snow or just watch "I LOve Lucy" reruns... Ya see, when yer homies never ever make it to the finals of anything then you just don't get that "final's" mindset so for us, when the last regular season game is over, and usually well before, we have lost interest in that particualr sport...

Then we get all hyped up about the next looser and root for it until it craps out and then back to raking leaves, mowing shoveling snow or Lucy and Ethel...

Only folks in DC understand this... Actually, it's kinda a blessing... Frees up alot of time...

A-Each Team shall be permitted to take one thirty-second time-out during the course of any game, regular-season or playoffs.

B-This time-out must be taken during a normal stoppage of play. Only one time-out, commercial or Team, shall be permitted at any one stoppage of play.
(NOTE) For the purpose of this Rule, a commercial stoppage in play is deemed to be an "official time-out" and not charged to either Team.

C-Any player designated by the Coach will indicate to the Referee (prior to the drop of the puck) that his Team is exercising its option and the Referee will report the time-out to the Game

D-Timekeeper who shall be responsible for signaling the termination of the time-out.

E-No time-out shall be granted following a face-off violation.
(NEW for 2005-06) When a penalty shot has been awarded to either Team by the Referee, no time-out will be granted once instructions have been given to the player taking the shot and the goalkeeper defending the shot. No time-out will be granted during the shootout.

Whats the call?

An attacking player strips the defenseman of the puck at the defenceman's blueline. Attacking player is clearly on a breakaway when he is tripped by the defenseman. The attacking player is able to return to his skates, still in possession of the puck and continues towards the net. As the attacking player continues towards the goal, still on a breakaway, he is clearly hooked from behind by the other defenceman!

No peaking.....what's yer call?

Tripping penalty to be called if defending team touches the puck. Ref's hand is up. However the player gets up and takes off again but is hooked. Ref calls a penalty shot. Man in box for tripping even if the goalie is scored upon on the penalty shot.

And a GREAT pub-dog dog (according to Leadfingers) who hears goals being scored and celebrates with us. Several boxes of treats so each person can reward him for their own teams' goals. Lapcats indoors and out....

Porches.... campers to sleep in for the highly-allergic, not to mention the kingbed in the MuDDorm if any spously fan-pairs attend.....

A whole fridge just for beer! A smoker, ready to load..... a grill or two.... at least a gallon and a half of BBQ sauce (two kinds) and wasabi...... aw, come on over!

Before it gets lost!

Two penelty shots would be awarded.
If on the first attempt, a goal is scored, the second penelty (shot) would revert to a time penelty. If no goal is scored on the first attemp, a second penelty shot would be awarded. If no goal is scored on the second attempt, play would resume and no time penelties would need to be served.
Reasoning is that you can only score 1 goal at a time during the normal coarse of play, but you can assess more than one penelty at any time during the hockey game!

Yeah! Fact is, you said he HAD a breakaway but was tripped... penalty shot. Then, he had a second breakaway and was hooked... penalty shot.

Now, I did not know that the second penalty would revert to a time penalty if the first penalty shot resulted in a goal. But, since you clearly explained the logic behind the decision, it makes perfect sense... which I sometimes have a lack of.

Okay... here's one for yas... if Eddy Shack wakes up in a bed without any floral prints on the sheets, did the "opposing" player clear the track?

Just got back form an evening of blues. Next week it is Celtic music featuring none other and my sidekick accordion player from the Rock(Newfoundland that is.).
Gnu, Eddy was one heck of an entertainer, although it was not fake like wrestling back in those younger years of our imagination. If I recall correctly there was a big media build up in a game that was going to take place between Montreal and Toronto featuring a great fight that would involve John Ferguson and Eddy. I think Eddy got punched in the nose that night or he took off on a run and Fergie chasing him into the dressing room.

3refs, that was a great quiz and as Gnu said, the explanation makes sense. Well thought out ruling.

I think both series will be nail-biting toss-ups. It will not surprise me if the teams with more experience eventually spot weaknesses to exploit-- and exploit them ruthlessly. But I think it will come down to coaching strategic adjustments, as I have said in past years, in the end-- and depth of bench.

On that note, look out for the Pens' bench. Their farm team is scary-good and, because of injuries earlier in the season, a number of their best have logged bigtime playing minutes with the Pens. Bylsma didn't see them in P'burgh.... but he coached them. :~) Chemistry plus skill.... scary good.

No need, Beer. I was gonna cheer for Chicago just to piss you off for fun, BUT.... I CANNOT abide dirty play. That crap at the end of the game was nasty and... dirty... DIRTY! I spit on the Blackhawks and hope the bastards never win a cup again! The fact that they won a cup in the 60s pisses me off at the moment.

What is wrong with these kids? and their coaches and management? This is 2009! This is not pond hockey for beer. It's not about... oooo... I am so pissed off... I wanna watch hockey and that does not include who you can injure after you know you are gonna lose a game... assholes.

Don't go away Gnu. There is some crap that takes place like at the end of the game but the quickness of the game, the precise pin point passing to set up plays are amazing to watch. Detroit in the past few years have been known as a controlled team and not to get into the fighting type that you still find and they have been criticized for it. But I want to see fast skating hockey like last year's finalist. One of the greatest series I have ever witnessed. It helped that the Wings won but man what a final. There will be lots more penalties up coming but lets hope it is not for spearing or cross checking.

I had said: It will not surprise me if the teams with more experience eventually spot weaknesses to exploit-- and exploit them ruthlessly. But I think it will come down to coaching strategic adjustments, as I have said in past years, in the end-- and depth of bench.

We all saw the former. I hope to see the latter in Game 2.

Sorry, hut submit too soon.

I have a question for anyone who has seen more hockey than I have. :~) I noticed, in the faceoffs, that at least one of the Hawks was doing a wiggly thing with his stick blade. I know that the visiting team has to put stick down first, but I suspect that what I saw was not nerves, but a tactic to distract the home-team's face-off opponent. Being from Chicago and all, I can see that emanating from there... :~)

I did not see the jersey name/number each time to see if it was one guy (nerves) or two (purposeful).

So did anyone see more than one guy doing that, and is it legal, and what do you think about it? Keep an eye out in the next Hawks game and you should see what I saw if you have not already.

Take any two teams; any game; Stanley Cup playoffs; five minutes left in 3rd period; tied or one goal difference - and you will be in for some excitement - guaranteed.

Yesterday's game was so nice to watch from my perspective because the game was mostly very well played, and, I don't dislike the Chicago Blackhawks. I do, however, hate the Ducks BIG TIME and was very glad to have watched Cleary (11) slip that puck in with about three minutes left to take them out in round two.

Very nice game today. Could be wrong, but I doubt if the 'Canes will take the Pens in this series and it seems likely there'll be a repeat of last year's final round. This is great stuff for hockey fans. Cheers to all. GO RED WINGS GO!

I think the 'Canes unconsciously assumed that once they'd whipped the Broons, they'd be able to whip anybody. When they found out otherwise, THEN they went to work and but for Fleury they'd have gotten us. Next game will show who really wants this.

Seeing as this is not too much of a limb to go out on, I'll make an early prediction and say Wings-Pens final. I'll make another that says Crosby will win the Maple Leaf Gardens Trophy!
"Out of Gas" will be the phrase used by both Chicago and Carolina. You have to role out 4 lines not 3 to win at this time of year.
Just for giggles, I'd like to see team pictures taken before and after the playoffs. No doubt about(not a boot)it, these hockey players take a "shit kickin" like no other sport!

This AM I think I know.

Did any of you see the TV ad at the beginning of the season where Crosby gets up and steps out of a photo taken at his most discouraged, at the end of last year's final? He sez, "I don't ever want to feel that way again." That is PART of how and why they won. They all remember-- those who were there, and those who came later but have been there before.

Another part of it is Geno's parents being here this year. The Russian soul can be a dark soul. Depression can be a bad bear. 'Nuff said? When he lights up and his legs get that odd spidery-configuration, he IS going to score several goals. Try to hurt him when you hit, and that is what you will get. Especially now that the folks are there to see it. Last night I saw his dad weeping with joy. No big, bad-ass hockey player is gonna spell out why he wants his mommy and daddy there, but there it is. Geno has momma's face and enthusiasm... and poppa's soul.

Another part is that our coaching change is going better than their coaching change. The 'Canes have forgotten one of LaViolettes' biggest messages to them as a team, and they need to get it back-- I am not going to tell them! LV's angle was, "win every period." Period. Win the first one, and then wipe it out. Win the 2nd. Then win the 3rd. If you do that, you win the game, without overtime. Saves gas, discourages opponents. I think they also miss his defensive-end coaching and his ability to change strategy mid-game. Bylsma came in at the time the Pens were ready to graduate Therrien's bachelor's program and start their doctorates. Maurice has some team development yet to do. His guys are older pro's. They're a little harder to "motivate."

===

But I still don't effin' believe it. 'Canes will take next two with home ice line-changes. Then we have to win the two home games or one at their place to get it in 6. I think the 'Canes will smarten up quicker than that. Iffen we do pull it off, it's what I said before-- depth plus coaching.

Some how I get the impression that a whole lot of people are cheering for Chicago - especially the NHL big suits. There are those Detroit "haters" out there who always like to see them lose; and, Chicago is a bigger market than Detroit, so the NHL would love to have them in the finals. Never-the-less, I'm still convinced that the Red Wings are the best team in hockey and they should prevail; I also think that Pittsburgh is the best in the east and they're proving it. That said, when you have your top defensive player break his stick, in his own end, in overtime - well, there are some things you just cannot control; and, if you're on the other side, why,...you capitalize - unless, of course, you're the Capitals.
We're looking forward to tomorrow. GO RED WINGS GO!          mwh

We were having an interesting chat yesterday on the way home from a GREAT Memorial Day picnic, about what happens behind the scenes during the playoffs as each team's whole organization may or may not get involved in the preparation. We opined that the way I like to look at the whole game is much more from the GM-side than the coaching side.

So I looked back to the start of this thread to see what I said about our ECHL team, and bingo-- we made it exactly as far as I had predicted.

Now, for the Stanley Cup, I don't have a prediction at this point about the Pens. All I can really say for sure is that I hope-- given what we have been told about the Final scheduling-- that this series continues to be a helpful learning laboratory for the Pens and that they win the series but without incurring TOO much rest time till the Final starts.

The start date for the Final was set in stone, I believe, and planned to start earlier ONLY if both of the current series "swept." So anyone finishing too early is gonna have some rust time. I want the Pens to keep learning and working out. A few days to heal up, fine, but only a very few, IMO, will work.

Of course that assumes the Canes don't find out how to beat them. And that gets back to the GM side. Hope their's ain't any too swift. :~)

GO PENS!

Adrien, there is a game tonight-- not your team, but I'm off beer for the evening so please consider mine, yours.

Pitt is going to be tough to beat! I thought 4 straight would be a bit of a stretch against Carolina, but they did it! I wouldn't dare consider it against Detroit, but stranger things have happened. My apologies to Chicago fans for already counting them out, but youth and enthusiasm isn't quite enough at this point in the playoffs. Out of Gas. I'll take Pittsburgh in 6 and like I said before, Crosby gets a trophy of Maple Leaf Gardens!
I know it's getting a little ahead of things, but I see Pitt and Chicago with lots of potential for years to come if they can keep it together. It all depends on how greedy the players are, and how stupid the GM's throughout the league are willing to get!

?!?!?!?

People have said much the same thing in past years, and I still do not get it. Yes, it's GREAT when one has a team in the hunt, but even when we don't, hockey's still the most entertaining off-work interest, at our house.

If for no other reason that that half the players on other teams will eventually end up on ours, and that till they do it's good to know what kind of sh*t they can pull when they play us next year. The Tour de France is like that too-- the peloton is the peloton, regardless of which team jerseys a guy happens to be wearing at any one point in time.

Five Reasons the Pens are Headed Back to the Final
Shawn P. Roarke | NHL.com Senior Writer
May 26, 2009, 10:17 PM EDT

RALEIGH, N.C. -- There are a number of reasons why the Pittsburgh Penguins virtually lapped a very good -- and very game -- Carolina Hurricanes team in a stunning four-game ouster in what many expected to be a much more evenly balanced Eastern Conference Finals.

But here are the five most telling reasons why the Penguins are making plans to face either the Detroit Red Wings or the Chicago Blackhawks -- Detroit leads the Western Conference Finals 3-1 -- in the Stanley Cup Final.

Experience -- Losing to Detroit in the Stanley Cup Final last June was painful but necessary. It is a rite of passage most teams must go through before they are worthy of being called champions. The lessons learned in falling just short of your lifelong dream -- particularly on the mental side of the ledger -- are invaluable the next time around. All of Pittsburgh's key players -- Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury -- lived through the tempest of last year's Final, a six-game defeat to an experienced Detroit club, and came out the other side with a lot more mental toughness.

Health -- Pittsburgh had few injury worries in the Eastern Conference Finals. Yes, Sergei Gonchar hurt his knee in the previous round, but he was able to play in every game of the Eastern Conference Finals, getting better with each contest. How hurt could a player who saw close to 20 minutes a game really be? Carolina, meanwhile, saw Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole get injured in Game 1 and never fully recover. Plus, there were rather loud whispers that goalie Cam Ward was playing with an unannounced injury. Grueling seven-game series against New Jersey and Boston in the previous two rounds seemed to empty Carolina's tank before Round 3 even got under way.

Depth -- Because they dressed a seventh defenseman, the Penguins dressed just 11 forwards in each game. But that alignment allowed Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma to construct a stunning fourth line, which featured Miroslav Satan and veteran Craig Adams flanking Crosby, Malkin or Jordan Staal. Needless to say, such a luxury proved very hard for Carolina coach Paul Maurice and his players to handle when it came to game planning and matchups on the ice. But it wasn't just a revamped fourth line. Malkin leads the League in playoff points, yet he is only the second-line center behind Crosby, who's tops in goals.

Defense -- This isn't usually the first word that pops into the old cranium when you think about the run-and-gun Penguins, but Pittsburgh's defense might have been more important in this series than its top line. Eric Staal is Carolina's main threat and had earned the respect of everyone for almost singlehandedly dismantling the Devils and the Bruins. But he never got on track in the conference finals. Staal had one measly assist through three games and was minus-6 (he did score in Game 4). So how did Pittsburgh hold down the same Staal who had put up 9 goals and 13 points in Carolina's first 14 games? It boiled down to a steady dose of defensemen Hal Gill and Rob Scuderi hopping over the boards every time Staal stepped on the ice. Oh yeah, Eric Staal also saw a fair amount of Pittsburgh's Jordan Staal, the Penguins' checking-line center and Eric's younger brother.

Star Power -- Nobody in the East could deny this Pittsburgh team if it got A-plus games out of its two superstars -- Crosby and Malkin -- and that's exactly what the two stars brought to the plate in the Eastern Conference Finals. Malkin was otherworldly, scoring 6 goals in the first three games -- including a dynamic Game 2 hat trick that turned the tide of that back-and-forth game permanently in Pittsburgh's favor. Crosby was all over the ice, contributing in every zone. Yet his production -- 2 goals and 3 assists in the first three games, plus a backbreaking assist in the second period of Game 4 -- was considered merely pedestrian when compared to Malkin's. By the same token, Carolina's top line didn't manage five points for the entire series. Yes, Pittsburgh's victory was the proverbial 20-man effort, but there was no denying that Crosby and Malkin were in the vanguard of the march to the Stanley Cup Final.

Well, the road to the Stanley Cup still goes right through Detroit. The boys may lose tonight but they will not lose the series being up now by 3-1; they will, therefore, play the Pens again this year for the final - and it should be great.

I have to believe that folks are simply tired of the Red Wings like baseball fans who don't like the Yankees and are tired of them, too.

I honestly feel, however, that the Wings are simply the best team in the NHL and should win the cup again this year. Heck, I'm expecting them to win it next year, too - I really think they're that good.
Nuts I am? Maybe, but I will write that there is not another team in the NHL that can lose (arguably) it's top two players and remain so strong that they can come out and win a road game 6-1, such as was played the other night in the conference finals - amazing, simply amazing.

Nuff said; there's a game in a few hours that includes pizza and beer down here in Hockeytown South - wish ya'all could join us. The winged-wheel needs to move with all deliberate speed tonight in order to wrap this thing up and prepare for the Pens. GO RED WINGS!
Cheers,...............mwh

Don't forget to order "Little Cesar's" Susan.
I agree Michael, the Wings are more than just good. They are great and not just three lines but all four. And the line up for next year will have them right in the thick of things as well. Their rookies look great and will soon have to be filling in some big shoes.
Go Wings.

Bobad, I know it hurts when your team loses or are not in the playoffs. I, and my Wing partners have been there. Especially through the Ned Harkness years. But tell me, who did you cheer for before the Ottawa Senators came into play? And I can't believe your statement, "Here's hoping the run for the cup will provide a little more excitement". I'm sure you don't believe what you just posted. The best hockey last year was the playoff final. The best I have ever witnessed. The speed, precession passing and the Wings winning was great as well. But you know what? If Pittsburgh had won I would have felt a little bad but not to much. The reason is because even though I love my Wings, I also love the play of other teams. As an example, I'm very happy that Detroit won tonight. That is not to say that they were the better team but it was a great game no matter who won. I also believe that the two best teams in the NHL this year have made it to the cup. The only disappointment I have is that of Carolina. Not that they should have won against Pits., but they should not have won against Boston. That in my opinion was the only upset in this year's playoffs.

Obviously, I'm thrilled that "my" Wings won tonight (Go Wings!). But, if not the Wings, I'd have thrown my support to Pittsburgh. After all, the Steelers are my football team, at least until the Lions win me back after their 16-0 season. (My dad was from western PA.)

Here we go folks - strap 'em on! Yes, that was a good game tonight and either team COULD have won - surely, we are thrilled down here in Hockeytown South. Being "old school," if the Wings were not in the hunt I would throw my octopus onto the rink of an "Original Six"
team; after that, it would be a team with one or more players that I like, or a team with some former Golden Domers on it.

This Chicago series was nice because I don't "hate" them and there is such a long history between the two teams. In fact, Kane's goal, as much as I didn't like it, was an excellent shot; I could never say anything like that about a shot off one of the Ducks sticks.

So, Saturday it is. Cheers, everyone, and,...GO RED WINGS!.....mwh

I'm looking forward to a more competitive series than the blowouts that were the finals. The Cup series starts this Saturday, much better than the June 5 start date that was originally scheduled.

Well, I just hope that the chippy shit takes a back seat to what these teams are capable of. However, I am not naive enough to think that if the score is two or more apart in the middle of the third that the orders won't come down to "get chippy with it." Big money yells loudly.

GO PENGWINGS!

Of course, like Beer, I wanna see good skating and stick handling. I really don't have a dog in this fight, but, I gotta cheer for the Pens on accounta that there Crosby fellah comes from a small coastal hamlet a few hours drive from me.

I'm thinking that defence vs offence is going to be the deciding factor in the final. I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but it could be like the Oilers of the 80's who didn't care if you scored 6 goals, because they'd score 7. Which brings us to the Crosby-Malkin factor. Aside from their skills, the one thing that I've really noticed is their willingness to take it as well as give it during this years playoffs. Detroit is going to have their hands full and maybe their net at well. I predict a long series with Pitt taking it in...............6 games!

GO PENS!

The talk at brekky with some strangers (fellow Pen-fans) was, Pens in 6 or Wings in 7. If it goes to 7 the Wings will nab it. Dunno why this feels right but it does.

But, in future, when someone searches the threads, there may be confusion. Why do we need two threads when one will do?

Any Canucks notice the price of potatoe chips, nachos, salsa and such has been knocked down? I was at two grocery stores today.... every second cart was rife with snacks and pop and ice and such.

When I came to the USA Wal-Mart Brand (Great Value) Frozen concentrated Orange juice was 82 cents a container. Yesterday it was 1.72. Chips, Corn chips and salsa hasn't really changed, in spite of increases in the per bushel price of corn.

Just got in from playing a little music Gnu. I heard that it was a great game by the Wing goalie. Up two and still calling a 4-0 win for the Wings. Call me nuts but I like what i see and they are not at their top as yet. Injuries still on the team. Paval will be back and will give the Wings an even more advantage.
