Where to buy a small guitar in Yorkshire

I'm not a guitarist but I know a few tunes and like to play sometimes. The trouble is I always find it difficult because acoustic guitars always seem too big and the strings hurt my fingers! I may sound like a wuss but I think I'd get on with a smaller size guitar that has a nice low action. Could anyone advise me where to look for one? I don't mind travelling a bit to find one, though it'd be good to find a decent shop in Hull where I could get one of these.

Parlour size guitars are quite common now and less cumbersome than the Dreadnoughts and jumbos. Many manufacturers have a folk size which is small bodied with a well defined waist. Tanglewood do a baby traveller that is presumably like the baby taylor but less money.

Don't know what's in Hull but Music room at Cleckheaton are helpful as is Steve Noone at Eagle Music Huddersfield I think

Maggie from Hull has a nice little guitar she plays which I think is a Taylor - you could PM Les From Hull and he would no doubt give you some info as to where they got it. I've played hers and it's good to play but have no idea of cost etc.

Musicground in Doncaster used to be one of the best guitar shops around (bought mine there). I haven't been for a while so I don't know if it's still going - the had a resident luthier who would set it up for you. The lovely people at Hobgoblin in Leeds are always extremely helpful and have a great selection. If you go to festivals, that's also a great place to try different instruments. At Whitby a couple of years ago I came away with a Fylde cittern for me and a Buchanan mando for mrsleveller (both from The Music Room) - now that was a VERY expensive festival.

Musicground has long gone but the resident luthier did jump ship to work for Electro Music on Netherhall Road.

Actually Maggie got her Baby Taylor secondhand (another big thanks to Mudcat for enabling that!), but Antones on Beverley Road is certainly the shop to head for first. They usually have Baby Taylors, and Big Baby Taylors too.

Oh yes I forgot about Antones! I will head there. I'm planning on going to Eagle Music in Huddersfield to buy a banjo, so might find a guitar there if not in Hull.

Music Ground has moved to Leeds and is a shadow of its former self. There is a branch on Oxford Road in Manchester but their main outlet is in London where the owner, Rick, has been slowly trying to take over the rest of Denmark Street.

You will find the body of a parlour guitar more comfortable to hold but the neck will be little different to any other i.e. if a drednaught hurts your fingers so will a parlour. The only way is to stick at it - it will get easier!
