Does anyone know these Peter Rabbit songs?

Subject: music: Does anyone know this song?
From: the lemonade lady

I think it was sung by Joan Plowright in the 1950's and was recorded onto red vinyl i believe:

Song number 1.

We're a happy family, we're a happy family, and we live at the foot of a big fir tree, Flopsy, Mopsy, nothing could be sweeter, and funny little Cotton Tail, and Peter.

Song number 2.

Why do i do it? What is the cure? My brothers and my sisters find it easy, I am sure. I'd give the world if only I could, Once in a while, be good.

I think a halo would suit me, dangling over my head. When they behold me, they wouldn't scold me, they'd say well done instead...

As you can see they are songs written about the Peter Rabbit stories.

Anyone else know these and who wrote them, and for what?

Sal

Not a Run Melbourne race report

I often get comments about getting up early, training out in the weather all the time, how I must be so 'disciplined', 'dedicated' etc. etc (ahem, LOL ROFL). As you know, this is far from the case. When I was little my Mum used to play us a bedtime story tape of Peter Rabbit. Peter sang a little song about why he got into such mischief. It pretty much explains everything, and goes like this:
Why do I do it?
What is the cure?
My brothers and my sisters find it easy I am sure
That's how I've been ever since I begun
Why do I do it?
Why do I do it?
Why DO I do it?
BECAUSE"

My brother, when a small boy, had a record of the Peter Rabbit story (with those songs), also a companion one with The Tale of Benjamin Bunny. I have always assumed that the songs were written specially for the two records.

Vivien Leigh was also a wife of Larry wasn't she? As was Joan Plowright, later on. Hence the confusion. (I wonder if there are people who think Joan Plowright played Scarlet O'Hara..).

Vivien Leigh is not likely to be confused with Joan Plowright.

Our kids grew up with this cassette, along with the stories of the Flopsy Bunnies, Benjamin Bunny and Mrs Tiggywinkle. Wonderfully singable songs and delightfully told stories. Each one a folk opera!

Just yesterday, we passed it on to our 4 year old grand-daughter Izzy. 'Tis a proper tradition now...

I came on this site after a google search about this very record. I have the original with the 3 other stories but it is very crackly after years of devoted playing as a child. I found myself singing the songs to my own children the other day and decided to see if I could find a better copy to put on CD. You are the answer to my prayers and I am transported back to the past. Thanks for the links. They will continue the legacy in my house. I had no idea so many people remember it like I do.
Cheers

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been searching for it for my younger sister, since our mother died last year and we have been reminicing. She had these records when she was small. Thank you again for adding to our trip down memory lane. We really enjoyed hearing it again as it took as back to that precious time.

WONDERFUL! WONDERFUL! Thank you so much! I have been looking for this for a year. Even writing to the BEatrix Potter people. They knew the record, but said there were no plans to make it into a CD.

Listening to Peter Rabbit, I realise that after 30 years I still know EVERY word!

If anyone can download the other 3 (?) stories from the LP...??

hi there! trying to see if anyone has heard of this song i used to have on vinyl with my little fischer price record player. i believe it was part of the peter rabbit arena, but the only lyrics i can remember are:
    "I climbed up a tree,
    mommy said i shouldn't.
i can do it here i go
oops i fell and bumped my toe.

    things sometimes happen
    when you do a "don't"

cuz when you do do a "don't"
    like Peter Rabbit
    It becomes a habit...."

and that's all i that i can assemble after 25yrs.
anything ring a bell???
thanks in advance!

The record covers credit muusic and lyrics to Cyril Ornadel and David Croft. Ornadel also conducts.

There are photographs of the backs of the covers at rarelibrary.com/book/Col-c/155/SET+OF+THREE+BEATRIX+POTTER+45+RPM+EXTENDED+PLAY+RECORDS+WITH+DUST+COVERS.html that usefully also list who sings which song.

My wife grew up on these, and so did our own kids!

I digitized the six tales I had on vinyl, and cleaned them up (they now sound very good). I then found a seventh story (Johnny Town-Mouse) on the web.

Finally, I joined them all together into a single audiobook, complete with artwork and chapter markings for each of the seven stories.

These recordings deserve to live on! Here's my audiobook version:

Peter Rabbit Stories, narrated by Vivien Leigh (41 MB)

Why do I do it?
What can it be?
There's naughtiness in everyone
But twice as much in me
I'd give the world if only I could,
Now and again, be good.

Why do I do it?
Am I to blame?
The others can be naughty
But it never seems the same.
No one believes I'd like to be good
Never the less I would

I think a halo would suit me,
Dangling over my head.
When they behold me,
They wouldn't scold me,
They'd say well done instead...

Why do I do it?
What is the cure?
My brothers and my sisters find it easy I am sure
That's how I've been ever since I begun
Why do I do it?
Why do I do it?
Why do I do it?
BECAUSE IT'S FUN!!!

Does anyone remember the song -

follow your heart,
follow it blindly,
and it will take you
on a journey to a star,
a million, million miles
need not seem very far,
so follow your heart,
and there you are.

I grew up listening to Peter Rabbit tales and for years now this song keeps on popping into my head. Where can I find the full song lyrics as I'm sure I have remembered parts wrong and I'm sure it must have been longer than that??
Also, does anyone know who sang it?

Thanks everyone x

Thank you so much for the files. I have been looking for these stories and songs for years. I had Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, the floppy bunnies and Ms. Tiggywinkle on cassette when I was a kid. My sister and I listened to them for hours and sang along to the songs. Now I have the songs for a whole new generation and can't wait to share them with my sister again :)

My wife has just retired after 27 years of child-minding, and we started going through all the equipment we had collected during those years. Amongst the things we found was the LP 'The Beatrix Potter Stories - 1', which are The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies and The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. I've not played it but it looks reasonable, and the sleeve is quite good apart from some child having underlined all the titles, without a ruler.
If anyone would like it and sends me their address they can have it for the cost of the postage, first come first served.

But I can't make out one of the words in the recording of Here's my Sitting and Thinking Place. These are the lyrics with the word I can't make out denoted by question marks - any ideas?

Here's my sitting and thinking place,
Hidden at the bottom of the hill;
Here I can wonder any time of day,
Thinking of this and that,
With the hen and the robin and the dear old cat.

Here's my sitting and thinking place,
Everything is beautifully still;
No one to ???? all my thoughts away.
They're welcome to have a chat,
With the hen and the robin and the dear old cat.

Mayb I am but who cares I can listen to them again x

Pull that doggie's tail
Mommy said I shouldn't
It got mad and snapped at me
I got scared and climbed a tree

Eating all the fudge
Mommy said I should't
It's so good 'cause it's so thick
Ooops my belly, I feel sick

Go in Mommy's purse
Mommy said I shouldn't
Got the lipstick out the case
Couldn't get it off my face

Pull that doggie's tail
Mommy said I shouldn't
It got mad and snapped at me
I got scared and climbed a tree
Then I feel and hurt my toe
That's the way the story goes

CHORUS:
Things sometimes happen when you do a don't
So, when you do do a don't
Like Peter Rabbit
It becomes a happen when you don't a don't
So when you do do a don't
You won't forget it
You'll soon regret it
Don't you do a don't

I would love a cassette tape / cd or way of downloading the songs from Peter Rabbit...I'm trying to arrange a surprise for my younger sister, as we used to listen to these in the 1970s & I would sing all the songs for her...she needs cheering up & would absolutely LOVE to have this again!

If anyone could help make her dream come true, that would be incredible

Many thanks!

I found the 45 and converted it to digital. It is the "When you do a don't song" and "The Story of Peter Rabbit"

If you's like a digital download email me with "When you do a don't" in the subject line and I will email a digital download!

Our Brownie troop performed this musical version for the Children's Guardian Home in 1965 or 1966. My mother arranged the piano accompaniment. I'm glad to discover that these songs are not figments of my imagination.
