Lyr Req: The One I Love (David Grey)

Subject: Lyr Req: David Grey (gray
From: Dave Wynn

I have been looking at this song for a while and a freind of mine does it. I like the tune and the lyrics but I am confused by the Chorus.

Gonna close my eyes
Girl and watch you go
Running through this life darling
Like a field of snow
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc
Send a little prayer out to ya
'cross the falling dark

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love

see sample of first verse and chorus. What is the Repo Man. What is a repo man and what the blazes is a repo man doing in amongst these lyrics. Why should anyone tell the repo man anything etc etc.

I would appreciate any comments or insight.

He's dying. Sounds like 'the repo man' (repossessions man) is a personification of death claiming him.

Ta Rosie,

Wonder if it could mean the Reaper Man. Big scythe, black cloak etc etc.

Is David Gray/Grey the name of the song? Or the name of the person who sings it? Has anyone recorded it?

If I had a bit more information, I'd try to find a recording online or maybe lyrics.

David Grey is the singer. The song is generally known as "The One I Love" Google (David Grey Lyrics) will present you with some lyrics but I have always been a little suspicious of lyric sites as I have found some bloopers in the past.

It was released on an album (Life In Slow Motion 2005) and a single (30th August 2005).

I suppose these are the definitive lyrics because they come from David Gray's web site:

(You're right; there were lots of mistakes in some of the versions I saw on other web sites. You can hear a complete MP3 file on this page.)

THE ONE I LOVE
David Gray

Gonna close my eyes,
Girl, and watch you go,
Running through this life, darling,
Like a field of snow.
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc,
Send a little prayer out to ya
'Cross the falling dark.

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love.

Perfect summer's night,
Not a wind that breathes,
Just the bullets whispering gentle
'Mongst the new green leaves.
There's things I might have said,
Only wish I could,
Now I'm leaking life faster
Then I'm leaking blood.

Tell the repo man
And the stars above,
You're the one I love.
You're the one I love,
The one I love.

Don't see Elysium.
Don't see no fiery hell,
Just the lights up bright, baby,
In the bay hotel.
Next wave coming in
Like an ocean roar,
Won't you take my hand, darling,
On that old dance floor?

We can twist and shout,
Do the turtle dove,
And you're the one I love.
You're the one I love,
The one I love.

I was involved in what has become known as "the Iraq War". I think that "the repo man " refers the the "reposession man", i.e. the guy who will want to take your family's TV away, just as soon as your national government stops paying you as you are dead and thus no longer on the payroll of the Empire.

Yes, I've often seen "repo man" meaning "repossession man". But I agree with Sleepy Rosie (21 Mar 09) that "'the repo man' (repossessions man) is a personification of death claiming him."
