BOLD McCARTHY

1. Come all ye true-bred Irishmen; a story I will tell
Concerning bold McCarthy who in Liverpool did dwell.
Down by the western docks one day McCarthy chanced to stray,
And on board of a western packet ship he stowed himself away.

2. As we pulled down the river, my boys, to New York we were bound.
This Irish lad he came on board to leave his native ground.
This Irish lad he came on board to leave his native shore,
On board of a western packet ship, the City of Baltimore.

3. 'Twas early every morning the mate he called us to.
'Twas early every morning the sailors was put through,
Saying, "Where is that Irish stowaway? It's me he'll stand before.
He'll rue the day he stowed away on the City of Baltimore."

4. "I'm here," said bold McCarthy. "What do you want of me?"
"Oh, what in the mischief brought you here? What made you stow away?
If you're a man of courage bold, it's me you'll stand before.
I'll fight you fair all on the deck, the City of Baltimore."

5. The mate he being a cowardly lad, before him would not stand,
And with an iron b'laying pin at McCarthy then he ran.
McCarthy being a strong young man soon laid him in his gore,
Saying, "I'll fight you fair all on the deck of the City of Baltimore."

6. Our second mate and boatsman came to their mate's relief,
But McCarthy with a capstan bar soon caused them to retreat,
And when his Irish blood did boil, like a lion he did roar,
Saying, "I'll fight you both all on the deck of the City of Baltimore."

7. Our captain was a Scotchman. MacDonald was his name,
And when he saw what McCarthy had done, straight forward then he came.
He took McCarthy by the hand, saying, "Do not fight any more,
And I'll make you first mate on the ship, the City of Baltimore."
