'The Villan' - THIS IS BRILLIANT!!!!!

You have been a very, very busy bee and you have produced exactly what I have always thought was sadly lacking on the 'Mudcat'forum -
- a clear, consise, well presented,at-a-glance format to promote and find a range of 'folk' events and happenings around the UK in a calendar/put it in your diary/regular weekly events, presentation.

I am particularly impressed by the amount of thought and attention to detail that you have put into this - especially the clear categorisation between differing types of events e.g - UK Concerts/Festivals/Sessions(musicians)/Singarounds/Ceilidhs and even the initial links to Local Diaries/Concert Venues.

I am sure that this list of categories could grow, but only slightly because you seem to have covered most of the bases, and these should hopefully be accomodated in the two blank threads you have cleverly included above to make sure that they will be at the top of the thread.

The only additional post I can think of at the moment is perhaps one dedicated just to 'Folk Clubs'. I know that these are also covered under the 'Concerts' category and also 'Singarounds' and to a lesser extent 'Sessions' but perhaps they could do with their own seperate identity.
I appreciate that there is always a danger of creating too many different 'categories' to try to please the traditionalists and non-traditionalists but you will never please all of the people all of the time!

So having said that I will leave it up to you.

What ever you do please do not go under a "Feral Folk" category which has recently been aired on Mudcat and which is attempting to present a "Whats On" kind of Permathread for 'wild/untamed' folk happenings outside of the conventional/'domesticated' Folk Festivals and Folk Concerts etc.
I think it's on a hiding to nowhere.
Who wants yet more new categories/pidgeon-holes/styles/sub-headings in a world that just wants'folk' to be 'folk'and does'nt want to be shoe-horned into anythig different and 'new' thank you very much!

Just keep doing what you are doing because I think you are on to a winner here.

And so long as you are willing and able to 'edit' the thread and add new submissions to the correct and prefered category and to delete all enteries once they are out of date to clear the decks then - good on ya!

I tried to suggest a very similar format to yours to 'management' about two years ago (I think!) but it was declined on the grounds of it could take up too much space and be a nightmare to edit and keep up to date etc etc.

So you have my full support my friend and my full respect.

Carry on and make it so.

Wow thank you for that. I agree about a table that gives just the links directly to Folk Club websites. I am including it with the Concert Venues Table. So it is now called UK Website Links to Folk Club/Concert Venues Cheers Les

Does anyone have any more information about a 'folk gathering' at The Literary Institute, Egham on Sunday 17.5.09?

I've tried e-mailing the organiser, Terry McGachy, but without success and I don't have any more details.

I posted a very polite request on 28 April for details to be shown for the Holmfirth Festival of Folk on 8/9/10 May on the 'Festival' notice board but nothing happened. It wasn't posted on this site.

Why so?

Did I do something wrong or not include blue clickety stuff or what ?( not that I would know how to anyway !)

Please advise so I can do it right next time.

FOLK TRAIN Sunday 31st May 2009

My band Halfe Pannikin is playing on the Folk Train leaving Chester station at 13:15 on Sunday 31st May travelling to Plumley (near Knutsford) and back. We will be playing on the train and for an hour or so in the Golden Pheasant at Plumley while everyone eats, then on the train again on the way back. The train leaves Plumley just after four o'clock and gets back to Chester about 40 minutes later.

It's part of the Mid Cheshire Rail Festival and should be a very enjoyable afternoon out.

Hope to see some of you there.

Hope everything's OK with you.

Oh, that's a shame, it's a wonderful creation, and I've just noticed it includes my MudGathers too!!

It looks like Les has done an incredible amount of work setting it up & perhaps it wouldn't take too much work to maintain, but I'm not sure I have the necessary skills. It would be great if someone would be able to take it on!!

Thanks for all your hard work Les, well done!

The Jon Hayward Memorial Trust was been set up in memory of a well known Shropshire folk musician who sadly died in November 2006. Jon was passionate about music and always enjoyed sharing this with others. He particularly loved to see children developing their musical ability. He was a true Shropshire man who was born in the county and spent most of his life here. Consequently family and friends felt the Trust to be a fitting memorial to him.

The Trust aims to give some financially disadvantaged children in Shropshire the opportunity to pursue an interest in music. This could be by helping parents with a up to 50% of the cost of musical instrument or singing lessons, by meeting part of the cost of instrument hire, or contributions towards the cost of other musical activities. We are now in our second year of funding students throughout the county.

"Rainbow Chasers" playing at The Greys pub in Brighton. Monday June 28th. 8.30pm. Tickets £13 from The Greys 01273 680734 or Rounder Records 01273 325440 (credit/debit cards).

Ashley Hutchings - a musician, singer, songwriter, producer, broadcaster, poet and most of all band leader. He is mainly known as a person who formed the three most successful British folk-rock groups - Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and The Albion Band, in its many forms. For four years he worked at London's National Theatre with his Albion Band as music director of a number of ground-breaking plays with music, including the phenomenally popular "Lark Rise" and "Candleford".

The Rainbow Chasers is a group formed by Ashley Hutchings. "The Guv'nor", as he is affectionately called, has gathered round him three highly talented musicians, Joe Topping (guitar and vocals), Jo Hamilton (Viola, guitar and vocals) and Ruth Angell (Fiddle, guitar and vocals).

Together they perform a repertoire of self-penned songs of the highest quality and sophistication, drawing from a broad range of ideas and influences. Skilful and sensitive musical arrangements are neatly counterbalanced with tremendous harmony singing and shared lead vocals.

Throughout his career Ashley has sought to inspire and nurture new talent. This acoustic group emphasises the fact that he remains one of English music's most influential figures.

please remember that this is a WORLD WIDE WEB site, so saying

so, where is Hightown ?

The Roaring Forties will be performing "Icebound" at the Grimsby Folk Club on Sun 19 Feb. Icebound is the story of the whalers stuck in the ice of Baffin bay over the winter of 1836/7 .The presentation consists of 13 original songs interspersed with extracts from the ships' logs and the diaries of the crew. Not to be missed!   The second half of the evening will be a normal Roaring Forties set of seasongs and shanties...with plenty of chorus singing.

Just come across this thread for the first time so two thoughts
1) Unless it happens to be a thread in current vogue all this info is invisible
2) Most of it is up to a decade out of date!

I'm singing at The SOC Clubhouse Richmond North Yorkshire tonight 3/3/2012 but who will ever know from this thread.
Perhaps it could be the other way up. Last item first?

There is a pretty complete list of what is happening in Gloucestershire (UK) and immediate environs at Glosfolk Click on 'Diary' at top of page. The diary is updated a couple of times a week, and you will also find a pretty complete directory of performers, including bands, morris sides, singers, teachers, and even folk clubs! There is also a resources section with advice on business issues, busking, St George etc
