BS: Severn Injured...Good thoughts, please

31 Mar 09 - 01:59 PM (#2601439)
Subject: BS: Severn Injured...Good thoughts, please
From: Fortunato

Dear Friends,

Today I was sent this message:
...learned that our fellow Mudcatter, Severn, had
burned himself badly in a kitchen accident and was in the Johns
Hopkins Burn Center. The burn happened on Wednesday evening, covering 30% of his body (left arm and torso) with third-degree burns before he managed to get his shirt and undershirt off. On Friday and Monday they did skin grafts, and he is expected to stay in the hospital for a month.

I'm sure he could use some cheering up by cards,
The address for cards is:

> Severn Savage
> Johns Hopkins Burn Center, Room 9
> Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
> 4940 Eastern Avenue
> Baltimore, MD 21224
>

...... it ain't fair, says I. I barely know what else to say.
If thoughts alone could heal, he would be well already. But I know no better place than Hopkins for medical treatment to add to what we all are sending.

Man,oh, man. It's not like Severn needs more bad crud falling in on him.
I've passed the info along to some folks in the local shanty community. Maybe we can be helpful in some way.
I am assuming that infection issues involved in skin grafting will put visits out of the question for a time.
Thanks for informing us about this, Chance.

One local friend spoke to him briefly this morning. She says he "hurts all over", but is coping and would be glad for cards. I think that a print-out of this thread might be a good tonic in a few days....perhaps with some 'tasteful' puns included. You know Severn...'tasteful'... ;>)

Sweet Jesus... I have been trying to get in here for over an hour since I was told... dunno what was wrong with my connection... but I finally got in...

Dearest Severn... one of the finest, kindest, most generous persons I have ever had the priviledge to know... dear and great friend... my eyes are filled with tears, and my heart filled with hope that you will recover from this quickly.

I'll stop before I say anything too sappy... I'll save that for when they stop cutting off phone calls. I got cut 4 times... Skarpi got cut too. I guess they are treating you like the celeb you are.

Take care... take your rest...

Love and hope,

Please let us know what we can do--for you, for your cat, for your house. We locals will help however we can, so don't worry about that part. Thanks, Chance, for sharing this news. Kath

Is this Severn of the horrible, rotten, stinky puns? One after another, without stop? Punishing puns, as it were?

I am willing to bet real money (payable to Mudcat) that those nurses will pull out all of the stops, those doctors will try every trick in the book, just to get some relief from the PUNS. I bet he's out of there in three weeks. :-)

Severn, we've never met, we've exchanged a couple of PMs. I think you were a contributor to a couple of projects supporting one of our other awful punsters, Art Thieme. (Geez, can you imagine if the two of them shared a hospital room? The medical staff would be the ones all in stitches. . . )

Take care, get well soon, and if I can find a reasonably suitable card, I will send one your way.

My great aunt, Evelyn McCullough, was for many years a private care nurse at Johns Hopkins. She had the most wonderful stories to tell about all of the years she worked for patients there. It does sound like a good place, if you have to go to the hospital, that is.

Don't you know there are enough people getting fired in this economy without you doing it to yourself? I don't want to needle you, but I hope the nurses are keeping you smiling with some good painkillers there in the Halls of I.V. Not to poke too much fun, but they do get behind in their work. (These jokes would be funnier with some rim shots)

Seriously, get well soon old buddy. All good thoughts directed your way!

The hospital website specifically asks that only one designated family member call the hospital daily for info. The care required in a burn unit is pretty intense and they prefer to spend their time with the patients.
Not a criticism - I found it when thinking of calling for an update. Severn is unlikely to be near a phone - infection being a real threat.
So where is Chance getting his info? And can we request an update?

But well meant in the Mainz

I will not crave his Mersey

Nor make Ribble-d commentary

But take my Tyne and Wear myself

In Turgid Poetry

Avon this Test, I'll do my best

And not Lagan behind

But give an Elbe to our cares

And Liffey them behind

Amazon that our waterways

have know his tread but not the Orinoco

But Taff and Shannon made no bed

On which to rest his boko

Tees often said Sev loves a Punt

On Isis or Thameside

Or Rhone on the Derwent

It cannot be deNiled

And, yes, thanks so much to Chance and Susette, Wincingdevil, Kathie Mack and your sister Emily for letting us know what's happening. And so glad that Molly The Cat is in purrfectly good hands.

Ok, this is mostly for Severn.

(1) King Ozymandias of Assyria was running low on cash after years of war with the Hittites. His last great possession was the Star of the Euphrates , the most valuable diamond in the ancient world. Desperate, he went to Croesus, the pawnbroker, to ask for a loan. Croesus said, "I'll give you 1000 dinars for it." "But I paid a million dinars for it" the King protested. "Don't you know who I am? I am the King!" Croesus replied, "When you wish to pawn a Star, makes no difference who you are."

(2) Evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were avid bowlers. However, all the Swiss bowling league records were unfortunately destroyed in a fire so we will never know for whom the Tells bowled.

(3) A man rushed into a busy doctor's office and shouted "Doctor! I think I'm shrinking!" The doctor calmly responded, "Now settle down, you'll just have to be a little patient."

(4) A marine biologist developed a race of genetically engineered dolphins that could live forever if they were fed a steady diet of seagulls. One day, his supply of the birds ran out so he had to go out and trap some more. On the way back, he spied two lions asleep on the road. Afraid to wake them, he gingerly stepped over them. Immediately, he was arrested and charged with transporting gulls across staid lions for immortal porpoises.

(5) Back in the 1800's the Tates Watch Company of Massachusetts wanted to produce other products and since they already made the cases for watches, they used them to produce compasses. The new compasses were so bad that people often ended up in Canada or Mexico rather than California . This of course is the origin of the expression, "He who has a Tates is lost!"

(6) A thief broke into the local police station and stole all the toilets and urinals, leaving no clues. A spokesperson was quoted as saying, "We have nothing to go on."

(7) An Indian chief was feeling very sick, so he summoned the medicine man. After a brief examination, the medicine man took out a long, thin strip of elk rawhide and gave it to the chief, telling him to bite off, chew and swallow one inch of the leather every day. After a month the medicine man returned to see how the chief was feeling. The chief shrugged and said "The thong is ended, but the malady lingers on."

(8) A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to the local civic official who apologized profusely saying "I must have taken Leif off my census"

(9) There were three Indian squaws. One slept on a deer skin, one slept on an elk skin, and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin. All three became pregnant, and the first two each had a baby boy. The one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

(10) A skeptical anthropologist was cataloging South American folk remedies with the assistance of a tribal brujo who indicated that the leaves of a particular fern were a sure cure for any case of constipation. When the anthropologist expressed his doubts, the brujo looked him in the eye and said, "Let me tell you, with fronds like these, who needs enemas."

By the way, the guy who wrote these 10 puns entered them in a contest. He figured with 10 entries, he couldn't lose. As they were reading the list of winners, he was really hoping one of his puns would win, but unfortunately, no pun in ten did

True story.

A young lad, just entering puberty, went to the Shoshone medicine man out here. The boy was getting embarrassed around the old guys because his...tool...was so small. The wise old man, knowing that time would fix things, told the boy to rub bear grease on his tool everyday and in a year it would be big and fine.

A year later the boy came to the old man in tears: the treatment didn't work.

"Did you rub it with bear grease every day, like I told you?" the wise old man asked.

"Well," the boy replied, "we didn't have any bear grease so I used Crisco instead."

"OY VEY!" said the medicine. "No wonder! That's shortening.

Can't we make this thread a bit more music related and educational? I've just been researching some info for one of our "Origin" threads, specifically the one about the song "Ode to Billie Joe." It is of particular interest since the Obama election showing the amount of change we've seen......finally! So at least let me preview it here and some of you can critique it before I move it to the thread. Plus it makes this thread more music and less BS. I doubt Severn considers his situation as BS!

The story of Billie Joe is based in truth but stylized to some degree. It is an old story, dating back to the the late 40's when the only daughter of John Hatch, a Mississippi Klansman of some note, was in love with the first black attorney in the state. Jubilee Simmons was the grandson of slaves and his parents had named him Jubilee because they had both been members of the famous Fisk Jubilee Singers, where they had actually first met and fallen in love. He had gone to law school at the University of Chicago and returned to his family's home state of Mississippi, taking up residence in Carroll county in 1948.

Klansman John Hatch's daughter was known to be a bit wild and young Kelli had already incurred her father's wrath on numerous occasions. Kelli was living with two other 22 year old women in the small town of Campton, Mississippi when she met and began dating Simmons. Her father learned of it a few weeks later and came into town drunk with some Klan buddies to hunt down and kill Simmons. Simmons law offices were across from the county courthouse and through an open window he could hear the drunken invectives hurled his way from across the square. He slipped out a back door and went to Kelli's house to take her away and save them both from the murderous rancor of her father and his equally violent "brethren."

Not finding Jubilee in his office the Klansmen split up to search for him and John Hatch went to his daughter's, presumably to beat her or possibly (and probably) worse. He arrived before the pair had left and headed in the back porch door adjoining the kitchen. Seeing him coming, Simmons grabbed a kitchen knife and jumped atop the counter and then onto the top of the refrigerator that stood by the door. As John Hatch passed, he didn't notice Simmons who then jumped him safely from behind and in the ensuing struggle, Hatch was stabbed with the knife. The lovers bagged his body and threw it off the bridge on their way out of town. They were on their way to Chicago when they were arrested in Clarksville, Tennessee and returned for trial in Mississippi. Jubilee represented both and thanks to the testimony of one of the roommates and Mrs. Hatch, the wife of the deceased and Kelli's mother, who had suffered abuse for years at the hands of her husband, both were acquitted and moved to Chicago where he established a moderately successful practice on the south side.

An original song about this was written in 1954 by a man named Wallace Adams and differed some from the later recorded version by Bobbi Gentry. The original song told the story as it was, but owing to legal considerations, the Gentry version was the only one allowed to recorded. The original was titled, "The Day that Jubilee the Barrister Jumped Off of Kelli Hatch's Fridge."

Sorry..............Told it 9 times before but I figure I can still hook someone.......

I'll vouch for the truth of whatever it was that Spaw just said. Folks from Ohio don't never tell nothin' but the Truth. Why, my very own wife is admitted to practice Law in Ohio and she tells of the time one of her clients was being sworn in.

"Do you swear to tell the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth, so help you God?" asked the Judge.

"Up to a point," said her client.

"And what point is that?" asked the Judge, bemused.

"Up to the point when I start lyin'," replied her client.

He confirmed he was NOT trying to iron a shirt while still wearing it.
He is in a fair amount of discomfort due to both the burns and also the areas the used for the skin-grafts so in the main progress is being made but it is slow and steady.

Hey! here's some burnt offerings ....

A man goes to a doctor because both of his ears are burnt. 'Sit down and tell me how it happened, says the doctor. Well,I was ironing my clothes when I received a call and instead of picking the phone I picked up the iron and burnt my ear.'But that's one ear - what about the other? She called again...

FACE BURN

A married couple was in a terrible accident where the woman's face
was severely burned. The doctor told the husband that they couldn't
graft any skin from her body because she was too skinny. So the
husband offered to donate some of his own skin.

However, the only skin on his body that the doctor felt was suitable
would have to come from his buttocks. The husband and wife agreed
that they would tell no one about where the skin came from, and
requested that the doctor also honor their secret. After all, this
was a very delicate matter.

After the surgery was completed, everyone was astounded at the
woman's new beauty. She looked more beautiful than she ever had
before! All her friends and relatives just went on and on about her
youthful beauty!

One day, she was alone with her husband, and she was overcome with
emotion at his sacrifice. She said, "Dear, I just want to thank you
for everything you did for me. There is no way I could ever repay
you."

"My darling," he replied, "I get all the thanks I need every time I
see your mother kiss you on the cheek.

.........................

best friends, Daryl and Gomer, were sent for.

Daryl went in, and the mortician pulled back the sheet. Daryl said, "Yup, he's burnt pretty bad. Roll him over." The mortician rolled him over, and Daryl said, "Nope, ain't Bubba."

The mortician thought that was rather strange, and brought in Gomer next to identify the body. Gomer took a look at him and said, "Yup, he's burnt real bad, roll him over." The mortician rolled him over, and Gomer said, "No, it ain't Bubba."

The mortician asked, "How can you tell?"

Gomer said, "Well, Bubba had two assholes."

"What? He had two assholes?" asked the mortician.

"Yup, everyone in town knew he had two assholes. Every time we went to town, folks would say, 'Here comes Bubba with them two assholes.'"

OK, Severn, here's more of yer just desserts:

There was this horse stable, see? One of the prize mares was a beautiful thoroughbred red horse named Tess. Not only was she swift as the wind and - to her owners' delight - very fecund, but she had such a strong maternal drive that she would nurture and care for anyone and anything that seemed in need of her care. So she would nurse orphaned calves, let stray cats sleep in her stall, and give love and comfort to small, bratty humans who were often rejected by their two-legged brethren. She even, on occasion, 'adopted' punk rockers, jazz musicians, and (shudder!) BANJO players!

One night, though, this lovely mare was abducted by a gang of black-leather clad teens with body piercings, black eyeliner, black lipstick -- the whole ghastly works. For weeks the owner and the cops tried to solve the crime, and finally one day they were amazed to find their beloved horse galloping back to the stable, with the black-leather-clad kids in hot pursuit.

The cops, of course, took the felonious brats into custody and tried to get a statement from them.   They finally admitted that they felt alienated by society and had kidnapped this legendary mare in the hopes of availing themselves of her renowned nurture -- but to their dismay, she totally rebuffed their pleas for attention and love.

The moral of the story, of course is
(Scroll waaaaay down -- to give Severn a chance to come up with the horribly bad punch line on his own --

I even set up an account at MediaFire so I could send people links to download those videos without seeing all the porno lure pics at the bottom of the page that you get when you use RapidShare. Here is a letter from my friend and Severn's cousin, Kathie Mack:

Dear Friends,
As you know, Severn Savage suffered severe burns in a kitchen accident on March 25 and is still recovering in the Johns Hopkins Burn Center. This is Severn's third health disaster in 18 months and he has exhausted his sick leave. This means that he is not only suffering from the burns and the skin grafts they require, but he is in financial difficulties.

Severn is a warm-hearted and generous person and a long-time member of FSGW and supporter of acoustic music. Many of us have been discussing ways to help him out in his time of need. He is my also my cousin, and so I want to write to you all to solicit your ideas and support.

A first need is moral support. Severn appreciates very much the get-well cards he has already received. Please continue to send cards to him at Hopkins:
> Severn Savage
> Johns Hopkins Burn Center, Room 312A
> Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
> 4940 Eastern Avenue
> Baltimore, MD 21224

A second need is financial support (utility bills keep piling up, even if he is not at home). A benefit concert and benefit chantey sing are being discussed, as well as direct donations. Please let me know if you have other ideas, and/or can help with any of ideas already on the table.

So far, the FSGW Open Sing on April 3 has passed the hat and I have deposited that money directly into Severn's checking account.
If you would like to contribute money directly to Severn, please make a check payable to him and mail it to me so that I can deposit it for him:
> Severn Savage c/o Kathie Mack
> 7208 Maple Avenue
> Takoma Park, MD 20912

With many thanks for the kindness and interest already shown to Severn,

Kathie Mack

Yup... class and beyond... that's why I said I had tears in my eyes.

Fact is, I still have not seen or listened to all the DVDs and CDs and tapes that Sev sent me. The man is generous and beyond. His love for the music is only outweighed by his love for fellow human beings.

Anyone who does not know Sev or has not read his treasure of posts at this Mudcat Café is missing out... missing out, period. Take a gander back at his posts... remarkable knowledge and humour... a treasure, indeed.

Sorry if that makes you uncomfortable or embarassed, Sev... it's only the truth.

Well Severn seems to be getting better and coming back and posting on a pun-ctual basis......with several real groaners already! I know that typing is tough but I'm confused as to which side was injured and what he's typing with.....and perhaps I don't want to know!. If his right side is injured and he's right handed, than he has very little left. But if his left side is injured, he's all right. I know its some long days for you Sev, but I used to borrow a copy of Gray's Anatomy from the Nursing Station. There's a lot of humerus things in it...................

On a more serious note (E-Flat will do).....Severn go do something else for a minute.....................

THE REST OF YOU NEED TO READ THIS

Over the ten years I've been here, I have on several occasions found myself in a situation similar to Severn's and the support of this place in ALL ways was not only unbelievable but needed as well. When I have been given the chance I have tried to repay those wonderful, generous, and caring, folks by supporting others when it became their turn in the barrel.

Chance (Fortunato), with a letter from Kathie Mack, Chance's friend and Severn's cousin, was kind enough to post an arrangement where we can contribute $$$ directly to Severn. I know that none of us here are well off and times are tough, but 10 or 20 bucks from a lot of 'Catters can really add up quickly. It doesn't take a lot when there a lot of us tossing in a few bucks. We've done it for others in the past and not so oddly, like myself they realize the only way to pay it back is to keep the circle intact. So here's the info once again:

If you would like to contribute money directly to Severn, please make a check payable to him and mail it to me so that I can deposit it for him:
> Severn Savage c/o Kathie Mack
> 7208 Maple Avenue
> Takoma Park, MD 20912

So get an envelope and your checkbook, put away the Easter candy and all those friggin' eggs, and stroke a check.......Do it by Monday and this time next week I'll bet we'll have helped out......at least a bit!

In battle, in forest,
At the precipice in the mountains,
On the dark, great sea,
In the midst of javelins and arrows,
In sleep, in confusion, in the depths of shame,
The good deeds a man has done before defend him.
.......from the Bhagavad Gita

Give yourself a little more defense against the curves of life!!!

A Golden Oldie for you -

Building the new hospital wing....

When a panel of doctors were asked to vote on adding a new wing to their hospital, the Allergists voted to scratch it and the Dermatologists preferred no rash moves.

The Gastro-enterologists had a Gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the administration had a lot of nerve, and the Obstetricians stated they were laboring under a miss-conception.

The Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted; the Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!", while the Pediatricians said, "Grow up!"

The Psychiatrists thought it was madness; the Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing, and the Radiologists could see right through it!

The Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow -but the Plastic Surgeon said, "This puts a whole new face on the matter."

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists felt the scheme wouldn't hold water.

The Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.

In the End, the Proctologists left the decision up to some jackass who didn't give a crap.

.... Another day nearer health
Lots of good thoughts
'Em'

I'd say - and not only because my wife works in rehab - that he'd probably be better off in a transitional care facility for a week or two. Home health is generally there for only an hour or two a day, and my (unfortunate) experience with them is that many don't have a super-high level of technical skills. Burn care is hard.

Stick him in a temporary "facility" and do it quickly, with facility. Right now he has all his faculties, or many of them, and a facile hand will help him keep what he has.

I'm with Art, Sev.   It's good news that you're healing fast enough for them to kick you out of that nasty ol' hospital with the germs and all (and people waking you up every hour or so, e.g., to give you a sleeping pill), but rehab at home can be difficult, especially without 24-hour care available. If they can't let you recoup in a rehab center for a while (given the way our US "health care system" works), I do hope you have lots of people who can come by as needed to help you out with things at home - including the PT and OT people.

Does Maryland allow medical marijuana? And would that help anyway?

I hope our horrible puns are making you feel right at home in the meantime.

Sev, the hospital (and more importantly the insurance company) have a responsibility to provide a safe discharge. For anyone who lives alone this means that they have the option to discharge to a temporary care facility to assist in the transition. Having friends stop in is not the same as care when you needed it. If you ask there is a good chance it can be provided.

Take care of yourself -- for you and for all of us as well...

I have debated posting my comments on "the move", and I have discussed same by PM with several Mudcatters. I have come to the conclusion that, even though it's none of my business, and even though I may be posting upsetting comments, it is better that I post. Not for Severn's sake in particular, but for all those who may find themselves in similar circumstances.

I will try to be as brief as possible, so many details will be left out.

SOMEtimes, medical care providers want to "move" a patient and they may have many and varied reasons.

The patient may be under the influence of drugs and/or, more importantly, under the influence of not wanting to upset the medical care givers. Not upsetting the apple cart extends to the advocate(s) for and to the family(s) of the patient.

My experiences indicate that a thorough discussion involving the patient, the patient's advocate(s) and family(s), transitional care facilty personnel or extramural care personnel, and the patient's doctor (GP, family doc) is needed.

Ya gotta make sure everyone is on the same page. I have seen screwups that should not have happened. I lost my business because of such a screwup.

Having said all that, my post and others are no more than conjecture as no details have been posted. I am sure Sev and his advocate(s) and family(s) will make sure he is okay.

I found this Oirish blessing on the web! - honest!

May the light always find you on a dreary day.
When you need to be home, may you find your way.
May you always have courage to take a chance
And never find frogs in your underpants.

and...   this little cautionary tale

Lura, the Countess of Killarney, was on a world tour with her husband, the Count. They were staying at an Intourist hotel on the edge of the Ural Mountains and were scheduled to begin an escorted horseback tour of the area early the next morning. Lura had developed a good tan a month earlier on the beach at Nice, but now she noticed that it was beginning to fade. Not having anything scheduled after lunch, she took a blanket and wandered off in search of a secluded spot where she could touch up the tan a bit.

Unfortunately, Lura failed to realize that at high attitudes the rays of the sun were much more damaging than at sea level. Even worse, she fell asleep. She awoke, feeling rather uncomfortable. Dressing gingerly, she limped back to the hotel to have her husband assess the damages and the prospects for the morrow.
After one look he delivered his verdict: ....
"Tour all Ural, Lura? Too raw, Lura. Lie."

well it's almost folksong! :)

Gnu, Spaw is just a normal, quiet, home-loving kind of guy. He mows the grass whether it needs it or not, barbecues in the backyards on weekends, watches Monday Night Football, drinks Bud Lite, eats extra-large pizza with double everything, votes Republican, wants to return to the gold standard, drives a big honkin' diesel pickup truck, hunts ducks and deer in the Fall, buys camouflage thong underwear for his wife and/or girlfriend, has 2.3 children, and is, in every possible way, an example par excellence of a typical Ohio pervert.

Susette and I went to see Master Severn at Our Lady of Dispassionate Motion R&R Center, and there he was, the picture of relaxation.   Fully reclined and waited on hand and foot, as it were. Why they even brought him his lunch in bed, he didn't have to move a muscle.

Kind man that he is, he offered to show us his grafts, but Susette declined. Believe it or not our good Severn was quite talkative as well and regaled us with stories of his adventures in health care.

We took himself an ipod so he could listen to some old time country music, and if you folks have Itune compatible recordings, why you could send him some and he could down load them on his 'puter when he gets home which may be in a few days.

All in all he seemed quite himself. I asked if they used all foreskins to graft his skin, as I was concerned about the effects of swimsuit season and miniskirts on his newfound epidermis, but he allowed as how he'd grown it all himself.

cheers, chance

Did you ever hear about Richard Nixon deciding during the Watergate hearings, that he 'might' be out of a job, and thought he should take a few college courses by correspondence?
So this stack of books arrived, and his secretary, Rosemary Woods, opened the parcels, and couldn't believe that all that stuff was going to do Nixon any good.

"Look at these, Mr. President", she said, "You will never get thru half of them! What do you expect to BE after reading them?"

"Oh," he replied, "Partially sage, Rosemary...in time."

Emmy Lou Tallifero (of THOSE Talliferos) was dating the VERY eligible Chance Lee (scion of Robert E.'s family). She, of course, was a member of a sorority and living with her sorority sisters; he was a member of the oldest and most prestigious fraternity on campus.

They were very, very smitten with each other. Emmy Lou, however, was "saving herself for marriage" (which included Chance, but not until after the ceremony united two of the First Families Of The South).

Chance was frustrated. He was young and full of testosterone and he room had become a veritable den of seminal odors.

Finally, his fraternity brothers decided they couldn't take it any longer and had to take matters into their own hands (so to speak).

That evening they gathered outside the sorority house and serenaded Emmy Lou with a Beatles' hit. All over campus you could hear them singing, "All we are sayyyying...is give Chance a piece."

Home last night. Waiting on calls from a physical therapist and a visiting nurse. Have not been able to access the cat for a week at the rehab Ctr. Was not able to get on line at the hospital, It's good to be home.

Somehow my shirts (button down cotton over a cotton tee) caught fire in my kitchen while putting away a dishwasher load.Stop, drop and roll didn't do the trick, but throwing cold water on my chest made it possible to tear off the two still burning shirts and throw them in the sink under cold water. Then 911 was called, and I was sent to Johns Hopkins Bayview burn center. I remained there for a month, where I could guest on mudcat one-handed but not get online. Then rehab with no Cat. Sorry I couldn't join in the fun here until now.

I still hurt (sometimes life itself hurts) but am mending well and the skin grafts took well. The left arm needs lots of therapy.

Nurses are gone, but they'll be back on Thursday.

All for now.

Welcome home! This is probably not one of those occasions of "Some day you'll look back at this and laugh" but it does sound like you are one lucky fella.

My father burned his leg from shin to knee once when he and my brother were burning out a yellow jacket nest in a field. He always said that he knew better than to do what he did: stick out his shoe and roll the "empty" gasoline can closer to the fire but found himself doing it anyway.

He doctored and dressed his leg for more than a year but except for permanent bad scars eventually everything came right. But it was a most exciting time.

Been googling... there have been some recalls on dishwashers... I have so many questions, but, I'll bet not as adamantly as you.

There is one report I cannot seem to find, about a fire hazard (explosion) that exists when a dishwasher is not used for a while, like when you are on vacation for a few weeks... I did post a link to it or at least discussed it in the past here at The Café.

Perhaps when you recoup, you may find some answers.

All above said assuming it WAS the dishwasher.

And, ah, er, well, ummm, I hope you don't mind me asking these burning questions.

More Pun-jabs later....

'til Mysore heals,

And promptly downed 3,000 mg. of metformin (twice the daily dose) all at once.

Called the poison control center, too. They said that I might experience mild nausea and diarrhea, but I didn't.

I don't suggest doing it, though.

Well, I did but I got the wrong number. Someone said, "Yessir, Mr. President! The warheads were armed by your call. Shall we begin the launch sequence now??"

I had to explain that I was calling the Poison Control Hot Line, not the Poseidon Control Hot Line and it was a wrong number and I was sorry. He seems awfully disappointed. Anyway, the Secret Service showed up a few minutes later and took away my telephone directory.

Take Care - eat well and rest.

Bruce, et al,

Physical therapist comes twice a week and I do the excercises each day without her. Sometimes pain pills are needed. The arm and left side are still bandaged and get changed every day when possible, every other when not. The arm is getting better and hanging straighter. I'm trying my best working at it.
