I've probably listened to it a hundred times and it remains as fresh and as exciting as the first time I heard it. Shank was also a key player in Wst Coast Jazz in one of my favorite groups, Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars. Jerry |

07 Apr 09 - 07:27 PM (#2606933) Subject: RE: Obit: Bud Shank From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Laurindo Almeida and Bud Shank brought Brazilian music to the attention of jazz aficionados quite some time before Charlie Byrd helped create the Bossa Nova craze in the early 1960's. I have records and CD's of both pairings and still enjoy them immensely. The Lighthouse, in Hermosa Beach, was a west coast bastion of jazz for years. Bud Shank was a mainstay and very much a part of the "west coast sound." Sad. So many of the players I saw, heard and enjoyed have left the scene. By the way, both guitarists influenced a lot of players, including those in the folk scene who wanted to refine finger style playing and take it to another level. Still trying. |

I was not totally in love with West Coast cool jazz, but those two were brilliant. And didn't they play with Jim Hall too? A legendary guitarist. I would imagine a surprising number of folkies would like Bud Shank and his many and varied experiments: a great man. |
