BS: Penny boycotting M&S

This is really silly, and hitting me more than them. They have reintroduced a sweet which annoyed me last time they had it and some colleagues gave me a packet as a joke. Namely, Penny Pig gums - a name they have trademarked. It disappeared before I could write to them last time, and I thought they had seen sense about using a real person type name attached to an insult word, but it's back. So I've written to them, and now have to get the car out to go and get food (Bluewater being in walking distance).

I can just see this being used in the playground. There are still Pennys about in the world. I'm not sure about the Percy Pigs, but maybe I should have complained about them, too.

Penny

Well, as a child I managed to survive Bonnie Dog Food (and their nauseatingly-sung jungle, complete with "arf-arf"s at the end of every line) . . .

Well I don't see it as a problem - pigs can't read, so I doubt they'll be offended.

Every year I suffer the interminable "Mary Christmas"es. But I survive.

My brother and our sons quickly learned to ignore jokes about owning a farm. Mind you, I had to admire a colleague who invented a title for me that went something like Executive Information (and)External Intelligence Officer so that I could answer the phone as 'McDonald, E.I.E.I.O.'

I tried like heck, back when we got the Grant Center for the Library, to name it something like the "Eastern Idaho Economic Initiatives Opportunity" so we could call it the "EIEIO" but the staff overruled me and called it the "Eastern Idaho Funding Information Center" or "EIFIC" (pronounced "eye-fick").

Why, oh why, did I have to remember the old joke about the guy in Catholic confession..."Father, forgive me, I ate Candy"...

I've had all the usual Penny jokes from people who think they're the first - and don't they always with any name joke.

And I am schooled to ignore people calling at their little lapdogs. My nephews know a Felix. He'll be getting the catfood jokes.

Oh well, I've written to them now!

Isn't the piggy somehow associated with Piggy Banks hence Penny, the Pig?

I only point this out because we had a contest at work to name a glass pig used to collect money for charity. I thought Audrey worked (Feed me, Seymour!) but was out-voted by the Penny the Pig proponants.

My maiden name was Jacqueline Harrison. I lost half a front tooth when I was eight and, for some reason it couldn't be crowned until I was twelve. I got called Draculine Horrison by the kids at school.

I heard taunt after taunt about being "Henry" Hudson...no matter I was obviously a girl. I always thought it would be neat to trace our family back to him but haven't been able to though they were in the vicinity.

Good for you, for writing to them, Penny!

I did wonder about piggy banks - definitely positive. I wouldn't feel off about that. I think a feeling about the grins of those who gave me a packet is lurking. But these are adjuncts to Percy pig, who is also a lot of pink gums and hangs out by the checkout.

Well, if one must be named after a coin, better to be named "Penny" than "Krugerrand".

On the other hand, nobody ever named a chewing gum "Krugerrand Koala".

Wouldn't mind having a chest full of krugerrands. I would take the name if someone gave me a steamer chest full. Each contains one troy ounce of gold. There are over 55 million of them in circulation or in gold speculators storerooms. South Africa is now issuing these gold coins in several weights.

Closer ta home, Canada has issued one ounce gold coins.

Penny as a girl's name is a diminutive of Penelope (which in the schoolyard was rhymed with cantaloupe).

..who in turn was the constant wife of the ancient adventurer Odysseus, a patient wife, daughter of king Icarus of Sparta and mother of Telemachus. Helen was her cousin. She fooled the young bucks of ancient Ithaca who wanted her to remarry by undoing her weaving (a shroud for Laertes) at night, and redoing it by day.

From the first post:

Penny, why don't you compromise? Boycott the candy department. Why waste gas and lose exercise over this?

Pigs are so unappetizing that the candy will probably soon be dropped, anyway.

Percy Pig candy is a big seller for M&S. Google brings up many endorsements. Will Penny Pig also succeed?

See the Wikipedia article. This candy contains "real pork."

Go back to sleep, EB- it's a UK thing.
For a while they had stores in Canada, mostly clothing with some specialty food items, but sales were bad and they pulled out. This was some years ago, nothing to do with the present downturn. (Marks & Spencer)

Funny for a firm with the background it has, isn't it?

I did say it was silly, didn't I?

What was odd about the thing is that a previous version disappeared, while Percy kept on gambolling by the check out. I would be interested to know why the female has been reintroduced.

I feel for you, Penelope, having spent most of my youth with types singing at me, each thinking himself a sterling wit.

But how can you boycott Marks & Sparks - how can you do without their cosy little black jersey skirts, their delicious purple sprouting broccoli, their hummous, their chicken stock in a jar, their salmon mousse, their handy big pots of herbs that you can plant in the garden?

Boycott Amazon instead - the HSUS (equivalent to Britain's RSPCA) has a court case going for some years to stop them selling goods related to cockfighting and dogfighting.

Chill out, it's not aimed at you.
It's just a bit of frivolity intended to amuse.
If you can't see the joke, just back off for a while...

I've had two nice emails - two because mine seems to have duplicated itself.

I'll have to ask my niece how she feels about Katie the Kitten chocs from Lindt.

Have thought about an alternative use for both brands. Taking on demos to hand out to the police.

That should get them off the shelves.

Have read how the climate protestors were treated in the Steiner school - forced to stand for an hour and a half facing a wall, handcuffed. Bush's lawyers would say its OK.

At least Penny Pig gets a name. Percy Pigs 'pals' are just called 'Sheep' and 'Cow'.

Anyway it's only a bloody sweet. Imagine how my girlfriend Maggie felt when her name became synonymous with 'Thatcher'?

My mum, too. And then, to crown it, my obnoxious female neighbour was also a Margaret. And since she was born in Thatcher times, her background was obvious. Did you know Maggot was originally a short form for Margaret? (Mum was Moggy!)

Loads of other names now unusable. There must be Myra's and Posemary's who wish they weren't.

I was going to be Penelope if female! And Maggie isn't even a Margaret. And there's more girls than boys get my name these days. Just what is going on?
