They are the mother of the very concept of a national pulic radio station. When they began there were virtually no FM radios and disbelief that anyone would pay for something they could get for free. KPFA is still on the air dispite numerous attempts to shut them down by the goverment and by greedy board members. You used to be able to hear live the the voices of Dylan Thomas, Ginsberg, Linus Pauling, Edward Teller, Joe McCarthy, Alan Watts, Dick Gregory and views expressed from all sides of an issue. They were there for HUAC, The Cuban Crisis, The Viet Nam War and always let us know that politicians would never tell us the truth but there were still sources we could trust. If you would like to know more the documentary 'KPFA on the air' should be able to be viewed online. |
