Thought for the Day (July 6)

Notes from Fogeydom --

On Sunday, July 4, in Bethel, New York, on Max Yasgur's farm, site of the original Woodstock Festival, a new series of festival/concerts was inaugurated called "A Day in the Garden" (after Joni Mitchell's song). The opening concert featured Britney Spears, current teen pop sensation, and other groups -- Michael Fredo, C Note, Third Storee, and The Sugar Hill Gang.
None of the acts had any musical instruments or backup singers on stage, but lipsynched to tape with occasional live vocals. Ms. Spears sang 5 songs, including her recent hit "Baby One More Time" twice. None of the acts made any reference to Woodstock's history.
According to Richard Schlar, who had been at the original Woodstock festival, and got a free ticket to the show, "Spears ' act wasn't as long as your average Grateful Dead song."

I suppose that it is nice to have such a venue for current music. But as to references to the original "Woodstock", I have to say that you can never really go home again. The "first time" for anything that felt especially good can rarely, if ever, be adequately mimicked to equal the memory of it. So I say, "Good for them," they found a place to play. The same stuff could be done at any other location without lessening the effect.
