Dear Everyone,

Bonnie is leading an all-day workshop on Irish harp for the Lewes Saturday Folk Club
on Saturday 18th. July 2009. She also performs at the club in the evening. Here are full details:

Lewes Elephant Workshop No 115

BONNIE SHALJEAN:IRISH HARP WORKSHOP

Saturday 18th. July 2009
10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m. Places £25

Elephant & Castle, White Hill, Lewes BN7 2DJ UK www.elephantandcastlelewes.co.uk

Bonnie is one of the most influential players of the Irish harp & has extensively studied the music & life of O'Carolan. She is also a fine singer & songwriter. Born in California, she worked and toured for many years with the legendary Packie Manus Byrne and now lives in Cork. She also formed a duo with distinguished singer & songwriter Anne Lister.

The workshop will cover the Irish traditional style of harp playing, focusing on ornamentation of the melody in airs and dance tunes; plus a look at some accompaniment patterns in backing other musicians/singers.

Applicants will need to have some harp-playing experience so they're familiar with basic playing techniques, and to bring a harp (of any size).

Ability to read music is useful but not essential.

For the benefit of harpers I should point out that access to the club-room in the Elephant & Castle is much easier than the steep stairs we had to contend with at the Lewes Arms. There is also an external fire escape with access from the street, which means that large instruments won't necessarily have to be carried through the bar. The new club-room is much larger, with a high ceiling and superb acoustics.

My only worry about bringing harps up the stairs is that the Angel of Death, who lives half-way up them, may ask for a quick twangle. Here, thanks to Will Fly, is a picture of her with Alan Day earlier this year.

Bonnie's delivery of beautiful irish harpwork has been appreciated for many years by those lucky enough to be in the same space. I hope this workshop inspires many others to emulate her and an evening's joyous entertainment from her on top ? Whew ! Enjoy your Sussex trip, Bonnie. Hope it goes superbly for all.   Lucky Lewes !

Bonnie will also be doing a workshop for Shammick Acoustic in N. Devon the following Saturday, 25th July. This one will not be a 'hands-on' workshop for harp players, but more of an instructional on the music of O'Carolan and other Irish harpers of the period, on which Bonnie is an acknowledged expert. More info. later via the Shammick Acoustic website.

Just a reminder that we have places for the workshop and evening tickets. So far ten people have booked firmly for the day, so there will be at least eleven harps in the room.

I'd like to get a picture of them with our resident angel, seen here with Alan Day and his concertina.

We've now got twelve people coming to the workshop, but we could manage a few more if anyone's hovering.

About the same for ours, too, Valmai - and we could take a few more.

I really wish I could come. Maybe do one in Kent sometime?

Guest, are you in a position to suggest that to the Tenterden Festival or Broadstairs for next year?

It's just a matter of getting someone who's willing to do the organisation; being realistic, you can't expect tutors and performers to do that themselves.

I'll probably be doing something similar for the Southeastern branch of the Clarsach Society at some point in the upcoming year - no date yet but I'll post details when I have some. Thanks Guest for your interest, and to Valmai & Barbara for the tireless support.

I'm not really, no, but I'm sure I could organise something? Having had two harp teachers in this area, I'm sure they;d be willing to advertise your workshop, seeing as they wouldn't be losing business (it's a one off workshop afterall). I also know quite a few "folkies", whether they'd be interested in the harp or not, I'm not sure, but I could certainly ask. I'm currently based in Maidstone, not far from Tenterden, so I could ask in their folk session, which is held in the Woolpack. Bonnie, I'm the same person who asked for your email on harpcolumn, regarding Billy Reily- frejyaathena. Because I'm not very forum savvy, I couldn't find the thread I'd asked for it in, and thus never saw if you replied or not, haha. However, my email is frejyaathena@hotmail.co.uk if you'd like to get in touch. :)
