There will be a deathiversary BBQ party on Sunday the 24th May at Dilligaf's, further to celebrate the lives of Slats (Pete Hicks, ex Skinner's Rats, ex-Slattery, and formerly of a well-known big jazz band) Dave Bryant (well known here) and my late wife Jacqui Walker.

Starting about 1pm. Bring it and burn it format. Also bring instruments and voices. There will be some beer provided (jury at present out on whether a barrel or bottles so that the surplus if any is left (hollow laugh) can go to Knockholt, but extra will not go amiss. Also provided will be rabbit food and usual accoutrements to accompany the items brought and burned, charcoal, and Val's marquees in case of rain.

Memorial Chinese lanterns will be flown (weather permitting) when dark.

Location: 2, Elmtree Cottages, The Street, Upper Stoke, Rochester, Kent, ME3 9RU

Hosts: Val (Dilligaf, for Pete), Linda (Essex Girl, for Dave) and I (for Jacqui)

Refresh. It seems that my other daughter Jo may also be able to make it, and if so, and if she and Royston do a little long distance practice over the telephone, you may get to hear the most amazing version of "Young Ned of the Hill".

What about unusual offenders? Those that didn't know the departed but have since become friends later with loved ones left behind.

I am not wrangling for an invite, because I think we already have been by RB during or after one of the recent Stoke sessions. I just have a lousy memory.

Ive found the Lyrics.

Come into my parlour said the Spider to the Fly.
Come into my Barber shop said Todd..... unto Toby.
For a roughness I detect about the throut I fear?
Me thinks it would be better.............When....Cut from ear to ear.

Sweeny Todd is my Name cutting throats is my.............Game.

Upon the secret pedle my foot I do depress.
Flung back into the dark abyss.....unto eternal rest.
For my mistress Lovett meat for her pies does need.
A busy shop aboiling pot.............And customers to feed.

Sweeny Todd is my name cutting throats is my..............game.

Any one is welcome whether you knew them or not it's just an excuse for folking (as if we needed one) would love to see you Tam, we need some one who can sing something cheerful as Mr Bridge's idea of a cheerful song is when only 1 person dies in it !! Hell me been too long with Kevin getting worried about apotstrofies ! how should I know where they go can't even spell it xx

But to perpetuate the miserable thing, it is actually a memory of three notable folkers, so not JUST an excuse for more folking (and drinking).

Pierre - I resemble that remark about leopards eating howler monkey. You are joking about it(and other bush meat) being on sale at Sainsburys I hope). I am an adoptive parent at Monkey World, and although those howlers are noisy creatures, I don't want to eat them thanks. Any trees anywhere are safe too, as we are definitely ground based leopards. Any kills will just be dragged to a safe spot and consumed privately.

Mosquito repellent, throat charmer other than beer if required, you may wish to bring a shooting stick or folding chair or two although between Val and me and her next door neighbours I think we probably have about 30 garden chairs at least.

I'm not sure what plot Val and Linda have hatched about puddings, men of course eat meat with chili sauce (and maybe jacket potatoes) and that's that.

Come to think of it, depending on the meat and the skill of the barbecuers, SHARP knife and forks could be useful although seriously I have many just down the road in my house.

Val, what is the plot about plates and napkins? Burnables? Are they in stock? I might have 20 or 30 in a cupboard somewhere...

I will be accompanying Essex Girl on Sunday. Re getting there.

I do not mind where I sleep or what I sleep in or on. I shall dress accordingly to sleep out at night and I will bring a sleeping bag. If I bring those incenses my friend brought back from
india they should send those pesky mozzies packing.

There again if someone is driving back past a station Rochester or Strood before 2100 Hrs I could sleep in me own bed. I really do not mind.

Key Limes ? They must open the culinary door to a good tart.

Bye the bye is it from eating Key Limes where we got the name Limeys from our friends across the pond. Something to do with skervi and having a good suck on a Lime?

Daturas root.
It is a Hindi thing? They give to there children and it sends them on some kind of " a visionary journey". Bit like me at Knockholt come Saturday night.

" Many a Shaman has stayed away after the use of Datura root. Yes I do not doubt it there probably still walking aimlessly somewhere?

I have not glued nowt down yet Richard infact I have now got some small G clamps that do the sealing of the Woks so messy flour and water is no longer necessary. I will do a sea bass in the top compartment with lemon coriander and lemon balm and I have got a sack of Chicken drumsticks for the top half I will throw some Chinese in with that and con-cocked some sauce to go with it at the time

All sounds fabulous if rather technical! If we're able to come along I'll try to do some brownies & possibly fresh ciabatta.

Just a thought, is next door's 'camping field' vaguely suitable for small caravan? Either way, I promise not to bring our foxes or their cubs but they seemed quite keen at the mention of chicken....

No. The nearest conceivable caravan space is the pub carpark (100 yards) by special arrangement only - you will need to ring Dilligaf. I could (for you) get ONE SMALL caravan (in addition to my own) on my drive, but it is about a mile walk away.

Val, is there any nickable van space at the top of Church Path? My guess is that the farmer would throw hand grenades!

Afraid we have no space for caravans only tents which is a shame can't think of anywhere you could stick one round here without upsetting the neighbours and the pub car park will be full on a sunday so not much hope there and don't know whats happening about the farm yard up the road as its no longer used as a farm yard xx
Anyway as far as I was told in South America its the seeds that you partake of and the more drugs you do the better you are able to communicate with the dead and travel to higher plains xx

If Richard can walk from Leatherhead to your house, he can walk from Dilligaf's to mine. AND there are no estate agent's signs in the path across the fields...

Ther eare some passing places in the lower road. You would probably be gone before the council could evict (40 foot trailer anyone?). I will drive the road tomorrow and seek warning-off signs...

There is also an area that it might be difficult to evict a van from near the fishing lake in Middle Stoke (a shorter walk).

However, given the forecast, I think Pete the Hat may have the right idea - two bivvi bags would crack it...

Having conned their way through the gates of paradise, I have no doubt they will already have carved an enormous swathe through the musical activities of that realm. Has anyone noticed a sudden upturn in the number of harps offered for sale?

You are welcome. You could present the argument that this is an affirmation of your respect for departed close friends, who are gone and cannot be revived, (and maybe even now wait suspended between heaven and earth for your prayers) whereas you will have frequent future opportunities to assist in the observance of the Christian duties of the new life.

The argument is of course spurious, but it might be specious (look it up).

Re bringing voices, I may be nattering quietly with folks in various corners throughout the event. I've been losing my voice after one song lately.

Bringing instruments to fiddle around with though. Maybe even the dulcimer.

Pierre - I suddenly remembered why I wanted those strings. Going to redtring little youth guitar to take to work and practice there on lunch hour. Since I cannot mudcat at least that is something constructive. I can hide out in the first aid room or one of the meeting rooms to practice.

It was an excellent event. We sent off 5 wish lanterns.

We also drank ALL the beer and MOST of the cider. There may be a "before" picture on someone's phone showing the garden shed looking like the beer shelves in a well-stocked specialist beer shop, and if so I hope it will eventually reach photobucket.

Some people were very very wrecked and there may be some sore heads this morning. You know who you are! I felt awful at 7 am, but managed to get back to sleep again for a couple of hours and now feel much better.

I caught a cider hangover. Ugghh! That Jacques fruit stuff is very sneaky.

TheSilentOne is still abed and he drank only a glass and a half of soemthing. But his is not sorehead. Sheer exhaustion from the past weeks of Osted, EdExcel verification, marking, visiting his parents and occasional folking.

I met and got to know more Catters - My guru always said, BillyBob and Dipsodeb. That Ben was amazing and I kept my eyes riveted to his fingers. Who was the fellow with the blues harp, next to Woodsie?

It was a top gathering. I wept on 3 separate occassions. No Worries caught me off guard with "THE" song. And the recording of Dave Bryant doing Grey Funnel Line. So sorry I missed meeting this man and then began thinking about the others I wished I'd known, etc. and wishing you all might of met Andie. She would have knocked your socks off, and not just musically. I can't remember what other song got to me.

Oddly enough I didn't cry when we sent the lanterns. Thank you for letting me dedicate one to Andie.

There were a couple of moments of chorus interrptus, which always makes me feel better when I flub up a song. Last half hour or so was fantastic with loads of rousing chorus songs. Always glad to hear Kev the Clogs sing the moving ones.

Thanks to all for inviting us. See you soon at Essex Girl's BBQ. Hope you all enjoy the Pig's Ear

Dipsodeb - I asked because he was stonking good at the blues harp and because I became confused (partly from cider) because I thought he was with you, when you left with Woodsie, he stayed.

I think I was introduced to him at the same time introduced to you? People and events are filtering slowly through the Jacques fogged brain.

I think that Big Pat and Pete the Hat saw the dawn in. Indeed I suspect each of them saw two or more dawns in since both were likely seeing double (or treble).

There was one wonderful blues with Pat's harp and another harpist (I cannot now place who) going round each other - I think Woodsie was doing the chugs on guitar. The one with Ben Little and Pat's harp was a real killer too.

John, my 4-man tent was in James and Emma's garden in case of need, but the catch-22 was that by the time of urgent need it could have been an increased challenge to make the tent stand up!

Poor Rachel was quite damaged this morning by the Double Vision and Treble Vision (both much more dangerous than the Jacques), and on my first arrival today at Val's Kev was NOT looking well!

I understand that Kev has a "before" picture of the beer shed on his phone and when he emails it to me I will try to get it up on photobucket.

VT, we don't know what THE song is - if you let me know, we'll not do it if you'd prefer. The last thing we want to do is upset people.

Sounds like we were right to make a move when we did - our "staying up to see the dawn" days are well behind us. Marion and i got home, had a spot of supper, retired at about 2.00 am, and woke up at 10.30 this morning both feeling fine, and have been gardening all day. Perhaps it was the double vision that nailed the people who felt a bit second hand this morning?

Thanks again Val, Linda, Richard and your helpers for the invite and a lovely time.

Hi James & Emma - thank you for your consideration in the face of us noisy lot.

If you can email the picture to me (Val has my email address) I will see if I can resurrect my photobucket account and put a link to it from here.

I will also see if I can run to earth the photos (they may be in Royston's camera) of Ginger happily co-existing with the BBQ.

I believe Royston also has the pix of the wish-lanterns threatening to burn down Upper Stoke.

I will talk to Cari about propagating from your tree.

Chapter !

First and foremost.
Thanks to all our hosts both here on earth and those departed for a terrific event.

I only played one song all night
I was completely preoccupied with my love of cooking. I did drag my self away from the Woks for "Ride On" Excellent well done every one.
I remember Richard,s remark directed at me in regards to "Hey Thats my bit' Very good I wish I could put my heart and soul into all I play song wise like I do with Ride on.
Thanks to John who hosted the song brilliant and Rchard who gets everyone going re Instruments and Rachel who excellent voice fills the Chorus with such great Charm.

I would like to Thank James and Emma for letting me camp in there wonderful garden its plain that both of you have very Green fingers, I did remember to let the Chickens out this morning has I promised Emma I would I made me mind up to leave the Tent pitched because it was very wet .
A Thank you to those who sampled me cooking and your kind remarks.

I can not imagine who the Very wrecked people were. I saw nothing out the ordinary I do not drink Cider so I stayed with beer and sank a half bottle of Vodka under the Light of the moon with Pat drinking Beer after every one had gone. When the Dawn came up I lay down.

Big Pat and Ben were talking in the Garden about the song Candy Man. I said to them if you wanna hear Candy Man ,come with me and I took them to Brian & Marion and asked Brian if he would Play Candy Man for both Ben Pat & Me which they played superbly ,Ben needs all the inspiration he can get he has come on in leaps and bounds and so has Pat with his Harp and who better then Brian and Marion doing Candy man to Inspire them.Thank you both very much.

Essex Girl you should get your Instrument out more often. You have a great voice But   You are also a Dark Horse Musically.. Well done.

Very well done to every one .

Chapter 2,

When everyone piled out on the road to watch The Remembrance Lanterns go up in the air I was some what moved by the whole thing , I was also honored to help support the Lanterns prior to lift off. Both my self and fellow supporters thought it was rib spit-tingly funny when the man in the car came down the road in the dead of night to see what must have been a site he will never forget. I loved the way his car-reversed iin haste and fled the scene after a moment of wondering What the Hell was going on.Mr Bridge made it quite clear" Parading in the road that you will "have to wait Mate.

Finally Thanks Val for the Bacon Betties Much Welcome this morning.
Thanks to Kev the Clogs who despite being worse for wear he insisted that all instruments placed in the shed should be taken in door at the end of a very long and unforgettable Day. Thanks Kev The Clogs
And of course Essex Girl who if it was not for her I would never have gotten there in the first place.
Light and Peace to all
Pierre.

I appear to have misplaced two Shubb capos, both the standard size, but one the deluxe model with the little roller on the back lever.

KtC says they are not among the debris.

Will all guitarist (especially the usual suspect) therefore please search their pockets (especially the usual left breast pocket)?

To ginge {next doors chicken} who having attend a semi mudcat gathering of her own free will, flying fences to get there should now be made an honary member. but I will understand if she doesn,t post !! Why has nobody mentioned I arranged the Red Arrow fly past as well. By the way it was 6 wish lanterns that went off, ME remained sober through out as is my way, not being the sort to drink.
Funny I can listen to recordings of Pete, remember him and smile but when Linda played the one of Dave all I could see was him standing there and got choked up, Thank you for the dvd Wendy and Bill of the old git playing, wasn,t he something.
BIG HUGS and love to all xx

A BRIEF LIFE

Away from the light of the day,
The night brings its gift to the eye
The far away fire of the stars
That turn on the wheel of the sky.
Some of those stars will go out
With each turn of the sun and the moon;
All of our lives have their ends;
All of our lives end too soon.
Some of them fade into dark
Before the first light of first dawn;
But all of the stars have their place
And tomorrow more stars will be born.
How long or how short? Any lifetime
May be gone in the blink of an eye;
Accept that a star has gone out;
But remember its place in the sky.

What a great time we had, a beautiful evening . Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to put it together, made us so welcome and cleared up when we had disappeared home. The food and drink company and the sentiments of the evening was smashing.
Tam, I do indeed know THE song you mean. It's a pleasure to sing it, especially with the swell of voices that joined in on Sunday - "Only Remembered" . We learnt it from Coope Boyes and Simpson. Thanks to Pete for the compliment re "Candyman" but again it is the back up of friends that makes it really go well.
Take care all.
Marion XXX
PS It was also quite a hair "raising" experience for me thanks to "Lantern Jackie". Glad they all made it into the skies.

Hello everyone. Thanks for a brilliant evening, if we didn't have to leave, we wouldn't have done, but 15 year old would be super stars need their beauty sleep. All I drunk was one bottle of Badgers, and I got a stinker of a headache, which is still nagging at me. Excellent music, great organising on your part, Val, Richard, and Linda. I found the lantern flying very moving, especially when Billybob stood with me, arms around each other in remeberence of Viva.. thanks for that guys. The entrance of Ginger to the circle was surreal. Can she come to future events, as a special guest please?

As to Ben, be extremely afraid!!! Not content with entering "The Dark Side" by the aquisition of a banjo, he now has an accordion!

What a Parlarva
I realize I think why my guitar sounded awful on Sunday The Tangle-wood?
I could not tune it properly the strings sound dull and I blamed my new Tuner My defense being the battery might be flat.

Richard tuned it for me and made it sound better and told me to

'Get some new strings"
I protested that they were new strings and that the guitar had been set up only a month prior to Sundays Event..

Richard then said I must have Acid hands which I cannot deny because I have.
And Brian did definably put new strings on with the set up because I took the Tanglewood to The Nags for the last session and she rang out lovely.

I realize now what has cause the problem. and I will learn from it.

I keep all my guitars in my bedroom and that day I throughly steamed cleaned the room it took hours to do everything and the guitars were on there stands in the room. I just moved them around the room. all that steam and all those exposed strings they have all gone bloody rusty and the wound strings have rusted from within.

I asking do you Guitar experts think this   possible I can see the top E and B are red with rust. The same on the Clarissa .

The other instruments were on stands in me wardrobe so they would not have been affected by the steam

New strings for Pigs Ear. Beware of steam Cleaners

Particularly if you have acid fingers, Elixirs are a wise investment, I would think 12-53 Nanowebs on your Tanglewood.

If you really can't hear pitch get someone to put them on for you - a tuner cannot tell one octave from another with any ease, so it is easy to break the strings.

I have a tuner exactly like yours, and I am about to bin it 'cos it is crap even with a new battery, and go back to using the old one. You can't go far wrong with the rather expensive Intelli (like Kev the Clogs has) but I prefer the ENO ET 3000 for its slightly faster needle - although it does eat batteries and those 2032 batteries are expensive. You can also get ones with a three-way colour change and Debs has one if you want to see how you get on with it.

I remembered last night, that a couple of days after the Wake, I heard on Beeb R4 that there had been an increase in reports of UFO sightings.

Turns out people were seeing clusters of floating orange lights.

There was a mention of Chinese lanterns.

Made me smile. Wonder if the guy in the car that turned and took off like a bat out of hell, thought we were aliens?

Want to thank those who arranged a special veggie grill. Very thoughtful.
