07 May 09 - 03:19 PM (#2626491) Subject: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Rapparee This coming Monday, May 11th, KISU-FM will air an interview with the one and only Bruce Murdoch (you many have heard of him). The interview will be simulcast over the Internet at www.kisu.org. The broadcast will be at 8 p.m. EDT, 7 p.m. CDT, 6 p.m. MDT, and 5 p.m. PDT. You folks living Elsewhere will have to adjust for your own time zone. Bruce will occupy the first half of the program; the second half will be an interview with another musician named Peter Schickele. |
07 May 09 - 03:46 PM (#2626518) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Bruce/Bro: Don't start any trouble while you're over there O.K.? 07 May 09 - 03:52 PM (#2626525) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Rapparee Oh, he's recorded. You don't think he'd leave AB at this time of year, do you? |

07 May 09 - 04:11 PM (#2626546) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: gnu I thought he was an International Man of Hystery. |
07 May 09 - 05:42 PM (#2626619) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Rapparee Yes, that's Peter Schickele of PDQ Bach fame. He's not as famous as Bruce, but he does have a following of sorts. |

When your new CD comes out Bruce I am going to ask my doc buddie for sleeping pills cause I am sure the same thing will happen ... I love the music too much and end up poping in the player at 2AM |

08 May 09 - 08:23 AM (#2627006) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Azizi Rapaire, thanks for reminding us about this interview. If your interview with Bruce is anything like Mike Regenstrief's "Folk Roots/Folk Branches" on CKUT/Montreal 's radio interview with Bruce in July 2007, it'll be not only informative but enjoyable. I'm assuming that Bruce will be singing as well as talking about his music and answering questions posed to him, right? ** Also, Rapaire, will you have transcripts online of all your interviews for those who are deaf and for those who miss the shows? I hope so-for the historical record and just for those who'd like to read them now. I don't think that there's a transcript of Bruce's "Folk Roots/Folk Branches" on CKUT/Montreal interview. But if not, there should have been. It was a gem. Bruce came across as being relaxed and witty (that's no surprise), And he shared some really interesting anecdotes about his past experiences as a singer/songwriter in New York and in Montreal. Those stories should be documented somewhere. |
08 May 09 - 08:26 AM (#2627012) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Rapparee Well, maybe........ |
08 May 09 - 10:34 PM (#2627477) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Neil D Transcripts would be great, especially if available a week after the fact. I'll be in hospital all next week and they don't have internet access. |
09 May 09 - 07:14 AM (#2627625) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: maeve Rapaire, I'm on a slow 56K connection. Is there any way for me to access Monday's program? Streaming radio is frustratingly disjointed, but could I somehow download it and listen to it in its entirety later? maeve |
09 May 09 - 08:57 AM (#2627648) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: bobad maeve: if you go to the KISU radio site http://www.isu.edu/kisufm/ and mouse over Listen Live, you will see that there is a dial-up option. Having lived with dial-up for five years I am familiar with the frustrations of trying to listen to streaming content with constant buffering interruptions so I wish you luck (sometimes it works OK though) |
10 May 09 - 07:29 AM (#2628192) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: maeve Thank you, bobad. I appreciate your help. I'll give it a try. maeve |

Can't wait to listen. Going back to Azizi's post, is there any way that Mike Regenstrief could get that interview with Bruce on line somehow, as I think it's expired now..(bit like the old gropies)...but hopefully, it's somewhere in the archives. It'd be great for others to listen to, if they missed it back then. Mike! Are you OUT THERE??? |
10 May 09 - 08:32 AM (#2628218) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Tim Leaning Thanks for the link Bobad I was really askin how to find Bruce on there I guess I just missed it eh? |
10 May 09 - 08:37 AM (#2628222) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Tim, you could go over to Mike's myspace page and ask him. The more requests he gets, the more he may think about doing it, (if he can, that is) I just posted mine.. Mike Regenstrief's Myspace |
10 May 09 - 08:50 AM (#2628228) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: maeve Tim Leaning- Bruce's interview will air tomorrow night (Monday). You haven't missed it. 11 May 09 - 08:24 AM (#2628928) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Rapparee Seven hours earlier, I think. That is, noon here is 7 p.m. for UKers -- I think. By the way, the intent is to eventually have all of these interviews available on the Library's website. Eventually, not now. We'll also keep a copy in the Library's "archives". Transcripts? Well, if I can find someone to volunteer to make a typescript, yes. But I don't have the ca$h to hire anyone. Trust me, library budgets are tight right now. |
11 May 09 - 08:26 AM (#2628930) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: maeve Tim Leaning, You are 5 hours ahead of us here in Maine. I'm thinking it would be around 3 pm UK BST. I hope we can each catch the broadcast. maeve |

11 May 09 - 07:36 PM (#2629375) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Peace I have never understood how to access radio shows. Could someone send me a link to it? ???? That is, a link to that very show, NOT the radio station. That I can find. What I can't figure out is how to find a darned thing after that. |
11 May 09 - 07:47 PM (#2629382) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Jeri They have to record and archive the live broadcasts if people are to listen to them later. 11 May 09 - 07:58 PM (#2629397) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Azizi I clicked the Listen Life option. The radio station I have on says that NPR will be on for another hour. The news is on now. Is this the right station or should I be clicking on local programming?. |

11 May 09 - 08:07 PM (#2629412) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Jeri All Things Considered just finished up, so the expected schedule might not reflect reality. I'll listen for a bit yet and see if the interview comes on. |

11 May 09 - 08:49 PM (#2629448) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Jeri I think the station screwed Rap too. I can't find the interview on the schedule because I don't know what the name of the show is, but what's being broadcast isn't what's on the schedule anyway. They aren't too good at dealing with their audience. If it comes on, somebody please post. I have NPR here. I do NOT have the Bruce interview. |
11 May 09 - 08:50 PM (#2629449) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: maeve Same here, gnu. I really wanted to listen to it, but if I don't get some sleep I'll turn into a pumpkin. maeve |

Rapaire has been wonderful in all this. He's a gem of a friend, although I'm aware that John, another gem of friend is joking around. As my grandfather would have said when a deacon of the church accidentally swallowed a small part of a radio he was repairing back in the mid 1950s: This too shall pass, my son. |
11 May 09 - 08:59 PM (#2629455) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Azizi Given Bruce's posting on this thread asking about how to access the radio station, I'm assuming that the interview was already recorded. 11 May 09 - 09:24 PM (#2629494) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Rapparee It ain't the first screw up. We had Dana Stabenow first, she was pre-empted by Obama and was delayed for a week. Then an hour of local poets (and they aren't bad at all!) -- half were broadcast, and then an interview with Baxter Black which was supposed to be broadcast next month. This pissed off a bunch of local poets and that's scary, because they're here and they can get me. Now this. I'm going to ask a few questions tomorrow and I'll report back. Of course, the station IS run mostly by students.... Sorry, folks. |
11 May 09 - 09:29 PM (#2629496) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: gnu I like fuzzy bunnies too.... with big ears. All the better to hear you with. 12 May 09 - 12:27 PM (#2629999) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Rapparee I only live in the present tense, even in the future and past tense. In fact, I'm tense because I don't get presents. Anyway, here's what happened: The young man running the station last night never got the word to broadcast the show. The guy who's the engineer said that he would see that it was broadcast next Monday at 6 p.m. MDT. Me, I'm gonna talk to the station manager and insure that it is. In the meantime -- we're going to putting ALL of the interviews on our website, which is in the process of being completely redesigned. "In what was a see-saw struggle that extended beyond regulation, David Steckel of the Capitals scored in overtime for a 5-4 victory that forces a seventh game tomorrow at Verizon Center in Washington, where the Penguins won in overtime Saturday. The winner will go to the Eastern Conference final. The other berth will be filled by the winner of the series between the Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes, which resumes tonight with Carolina holding a 3-2 lead." http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09132/969474-61.stm Penguins, Capitals take series to the hilt Tuesday, May 12, 2009 By Robert Dvorchak, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette -snip- Also "for the record" (if you will pardon that pun), here's this informational snippet: Monday night Pens game most-watched hockey game in FSN history Tuesday, May 12, 2009 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Monday night's telecast of the 2009 NHL Round Two Game 6 between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins registered a 24.2 average rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. The telecast, viewed by more than 277,800 households in the Pittsburgh DMA, was the most-watched NHL game ever on FSN Pittsburgh and the highest rated NHL game for any FSN regional sports network. The game was the most-watched program in the Pittsburgh market on Monday night, beating out such programs as ABC's Dancing with the Stars and CBS's CSI: Miami. 15 May 09 - 08:51 AM (#2632480) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Azizi Adrien, I'm sure that you didn't mean to imply that I would ever engage in "back stabbing, blows below the belt and so on". But just for the record, let me say this: I posted the information about the hockey games because in a couple of earlier posts to this thread Ken had mentioned watching one of these games while waiting for Bruce's radio show to air. I'm always mindful of the fact that Mudcat threads are archived and that members and guests can read these discussions (and can even add new comments to these discussions) weeks, and months, and years from now. As I mentioned in one of my posts, I'm not a hockey fan. But since I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (home of one of the competing hockey teams), I felt that I should share this information since that game had been mentioned. Otherwise, some reader might maybe in a trivia pursuits kind of way, or maybe because he or she is really in to hockey "Who ended up winning that hockey game that was mentioned in this thread". Again, Adrien, I'm sure you weren't referring to me when you wrote that comment about no back stabbing. But because future readers might not know that, I thought I should set the record straight. ** Moving right along, I'm looking forward to hearing Bruce's interview and I'm curious if he has composed any new songs since his Matters Of The Heart CD was produced last year. |
15 May 09 - 09:02 AM (#2632493) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Rapparee Azizi, hockey IS backstabbing, hitting below the belt...it's kind like figure skating combined with the sort of dirty fighting you'd find in some Pittsburgh bars that cops only enter in platoons. 18 May 09 - 09:11 PM (#2635316) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Azizi Bruce, that was a great interview! You were bodacious*! *For those who didn't have the opportunity to hear that interview, one of the two women interviewers shared that someone had described Bruce Murdoch as "the Canadian Bob Dylan". Bruce graciously declined that comparison and strongly complimented Dylan, saying that the one word for that singer/song writer is "bodacious." "Bodacious Prodominately used during the 80's and early 90's, bodacious is a combination of the words bold and audacious. To be bodacious is to be: impressive, awesome, brave in action, remarkable, prodigious". http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bodacious -snip- That definition fits you too, Bruce. ** The radio interview covered so many facets of Bruce's life. What I found most interesting was hearing about how Bruce traveled throughout the United States singing a song he had written for the Presidential campaign of anti-war Senator Eugene McCarthy. And even the serious subject about being a first responder/fire fighter included some lighthearted moments when Bruce shared how one of the firefighters rescued a turtle from a home fire after the residents of that house had gotten out. The conversation between Bruce and the two women interviewers flowed without any gaps and there was a very comfortable feel to the interview-it seemed like a conversation more than a radio interview. Bruce's sense of humor (humour) was interspersed with informative comments about how CDs are made nowadays and how he returned to composing songs, singing, and playing the guitar after two decades or more away from those forms of creative expressions. Two other discussion points that I hope aren't forgotten was Bruce mentioning that he wrote (writes?) short stories, and the question by one of the interviewers about Bruce composing a song about firefighters. Not surprisingly, in the interview, Bruce thanked those who had encouraged him to return to song writing and singing/guitar playing. Bruce mentioned Ron (Bankley) , Amos and his wife, and Mike (Rapaire) by name. Thanks Rapaire and thanks to the Marshall Public Library of Pocatello, Idaho and its radio program. I hope that a transcript of that interview is transcribed and posted online for those who didn't have the opportunity to hear it. It was well worth the wait. |

They are by no stretch professional interviewers. This afternoon, this very afternoon, they recorded the one and only Kendall Morse. Last Friday they recorded Bob Nelson. By the way, wish Kendall good things on Wednesday when he gets his throat cut. And yes, the interview will (soon, I hope) be on the Library's website and possibly also as a transcription. |
18 May 09 - 09:27 PM (#2635325) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Deckman You know something ... technology is simply amazing. We heard Bruce interviewed by telephone several weeks ago, then later broadcast on radio, and carried live through the internet. Simply amazing. I just read a blurb about a new and young upstart named something like.... hmmm ... let me try to remember ... Oh yes ... Tesla. Will wonders never cease. CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson |
18 May 09 - 09:28 PM (#2635327) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Azizi Well, Ann and Kath Ann didn't appear to be scared at all. As I wrote, it seemed much more like a conversation than an interview. The sense I got was that the women sincerely loved Bruce's music and found him to be an interesting person. I started to write "an interesting character". That too. :o) |

18 May 09 - 10:17 PM (#2635349) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Beer I gave up. Bruce would be on for a few minutes then loose connection. Then try all over again get a few more seconds than gone again. I got pissed off and went fishing instead. I'm sure it was great. Adrien |

19 May 09 - 12:03 AM (#2635395) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Peace I wish to thank you all for your comments. The gals on the show were great. Period. I felt at ease and quite welcomed by them. We talked about a gang of stuff, and they indicated that they were a bit nervous. I replied, "OK then, that's three of us." Thanks very much to Rapaire for having me on the show. Now, I'm looking forward to hearing the Morse/Deckman interviews. Those guys have LOTS of tales to tell. Rapaire is gonna send me a copy of the show, and if a few folks want a copy I'll tend to that. I want a copy, because it'd be cool to have one. I dislike the sound of my speaking voice--always have. But I'm curious to know what the hell I said. Bundle of nerves: that's me. As to mentioning some folks who made the CD possible, if I'd said everyone's name we still be on the show. The folks who meant so much to it were named on the liner notes, and so far I haven't been told I forgot anyone. Whew! Thanks again, all. Bruce |
19 May 09 - 03:44 AM (#2635444) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Azizi, thank you for your in-depth details of the interview. I got so carried away listening last night...(and trying to stay awake because of the time difference)...that I couldn't write much. Your eloquent post says it all though. Great interview, Bruce. You put those lassies completely at ease. Well done. And, as others have said above, thanks to Rappy for organising it in the first place. |

19 May 09 - 08:11 AM (#2635592) Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch on the Radio/Internet From: Azizi You're welcome, Lizzie. When I write summaries of programs I'm channelling my Virgo "love of detail" Rising sign and Mars (astrological) energy. But when I make cut & paste, typos, and other proof reading mistakes that's my impatient, look at the big picture, love to share knowledge Sagittarius energy coming into play. Given that interplay of energy, I'm prone to make mistakes in my writing (as my Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter Sagittarius energy doesn't like using the Preview feature). I think that I made only made one mistake in that post-I meant to write that "I hope that interview is transcribed and posted online for those who didn't have the opportunity to hear it." In addition to the astrological explanation, my interest in summarizing radio (or television) programs is heavily influenced by my daughter's love of sign language. My daughter isn't deaf but became interested in learning American Sign Language when she was one of a group of children in her performing arts elementary school who were selected to be part of an onstage singing/signing choir. My daughter took two sign language courses at the University of Pittsburgh and incorporates signing as part of her conversation and class room lessons with her kindergarten students. I regret that I only learned a few sign language words, but her experiences have raised my awareness about the need to have online transcripts and summaries of radio and television programs for those persons who are deaf or who have difficulty hearing, or for those who can hear but missed that program or for people who caught that program but want to read it for one reason or another. I want to also note that there were a number of things that Bruce shared in his interview that I didn't include in my summary. As a storyteller, I really like how Bruce uses anecdotes and quotes that help people experience what he says. For instance, when Bruce was asked why he stopped performing he shared how he was tired of eating hot dogs, hamburger in town after town when he was touring. Bruce talked about being in motels or hotels that all looked the same and sometimes having to call the clerk at the motel's front desk the next morning after a performance to ask him or her which town he was in. Those kinds of make the experience real to listeners. When Bruce talked about touring with the anti-Vietnam war Presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy campaign, he prefaced his remarks by saying that he wasn't going to talk about US politics but he then kinda talked about it anyway (I love that ploy) by sharing a quote about war and soldiers. I've been trying to remember that quote because I thought it was so profound. If Bruce or anyone else remembers what he said, would you please post it? Thanks. |

We're holding back the really good stuff for when he's famous and fabulously wealthy so we can blackmail him. Nobody listened to the second half?
