Anyone own a Travis Bean guitar?

I met up recently with a country guitarist who I'd played with briefly around 1981 or '82 - and he still had his Travis Bean guitar, with which he used to make a lot of noise. I had another crack at it when I met him and, like the first time, found it "interesting". Quite heavy to hold - not surprising with a machined aluminium neck - and with a huge amount of sustain.

Not my cup of tea, but it was good to see one again. I believe they're quite rare and wondered if any 'Catters own one and, if so, what your opinion of them is. Their selling price, when you see one for sale, reflects their rarity.

Hi Will

My son has one. He's not a country guitarist - his band plays ska-punk. He says the Bean is good for tuning down and playing blues. There's an unofficial site where the enthusiasts post their photos, etc. You're right - it is a very heavy guitar, you have to be fit to play long gigs. It's a lovely piece of work, very well crafted.

I used to play in a band with a guy who had one. God, was it heavy, but great sound. Very unique. He was after that 1974 "Jerry sound" (Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead). Garcia played one for about a year I think.
