Better to concentrate on improving facilities in current location. As for virtual CSH. Great - virtual dancing, concerts, folk club and workshops ..... Digitise all the resources? Small matter of copyright in many of the books, recordings, etc. Manuscripts? Well, the Take Six project has been doing just that, and the m/s will be available to EVERYONE.... free very soon... watch this space. However, an EFDSS sponsored network of concerts, folk sessions and workshops around the UK would be interesting - and I believe some of this happens already. My "virtual resource" suggestion was indeed foolish as I said, because the large amount of money for such projects is never available when needed. But technically, it's not impossible, and copyrights can be negotiated. |

Getting the Roud index on line was a major achievement. Meanwhile, some of the library material is being digitised. For the reasons you state, it's a slow process, and the library is full of material that isn't indexed, sorted or catalogued in any way, and doing so requires a lot of time and expertise. Anahata |

The HLF has just provided a huge chunk a money for digitising manorial records at Essex Record Office. Hearth Tax project has just provided money for doctoral student to collate and digitise all Essex Tax records. We are in the process of digitising as much as possible (from photos and maps to will and Parish registers) at the ERO so it will be available via the all singing all dancing SEAX once it is all up an running. Huge expensive project. Funding is out there for digitising historical stuff. Copyright might be addressed by charging for access to those materials under copyright protection. |

I mentioned the difficulties surrounding such digitising projects because I know, from many years as a professional librarian at the BBC and in HE, just how complex and expensive these projects can be. Let's hope the EFDSS continues to get funding, such as Lottery money grants, to continue. |

Think of things like cost of rail, bus, etc fares. Can we all afford to run a car (I'm green in that respect out of poverty. It should stay where it is. If it got flogged off some rich bastard would use the land for financial gain rather for the benefit of those who wish to use it's resources. |

(Plus you can have a side trip to Hobgoblin, bookshops, Camden Lock market (OK, not what it was), Regent's Park - the list goes on - remember you came here to visit CSH!)
