07 Jul 99 - 07:58 PM (#93255) Subject: New whistles in the house From: Dave Swan Two new pennywhistles came yesterday and boy are my lips chapped. I glommed onto the Alba in D, and it is sweet. Really a lovely sound, biddable and reliable over its entire range. It's a pricey thing, but oh my, what a sound. One wouldn't think that machined aluminum would yield such a tone, but it does. Meanwhile PJ has taken the Sweetheart in D, made of blackwood. The Sweetheart tastes like a pencil and is a bit thick through the fipple for me, but PJ makes it sing. I find it cranky in its low range, but it pays off in the top end. It's got two good octaves at the top--more for all I know, the dog seems to come alert when there's nothing for us to hear.
