BS: What Meds Do You Take?

Subject: BS: What Meds Do You Take?
From: catspaw49

This kinda' came up on another thread and it reminded me of the old days when we were getting to know each other and ran a ton of this type of thread which culminated with Art Thieme (as a joke because he was disgusted) asking what condoms Mudcatters used.....It of course became a Mudcat Classic.

Here I'm just curious as a lot of us have had health problems or age problems or both!!! LOL............Don't get uptight and you don't have to play.....this is just for fun. You don't have to name them unless you want to and simply the number of prescription meds will do.

In my case, I don't care so I'll go first. I take 9 different prescription meds daily and some twice a day. Here's the list:

Nexium Caps 40MG (x2)
Lovastatin Tabs 40MG
Digoxin Tabs 0.125MG
Spironolactone Tabs (Aldactone) 25MG
Furosemide Tabs (Lasix) 40MG (x2)
Enalapril Mal Tabs (Vasotech) 20MG (x2)
Carvedilol Tabs (Coreg) 25MG (x2)
Potassium Chlor Er Tabs 20MEQ (x2)

Well, there are the medications I take, vs. the medications I'm supposed to take. I"m not supposed to take a whole slew, and would be in big trouble if I was, because I have a hard time making myself take medications on a regular basis, have problems with side effects and a lousy insurance plan with a $5000 deductible that makes me reluctant to go back to the good doctor when I have trouble tolerating side effects.

I'm supposed to take lovastatin 20 mg. qd
Aspirin 81 mg. qd
Zolpidem 10mg qhs prn
sertraline 50 mg qd
1500 mg. calcium citrate with magnesium qd.
Ibuprofen, 800mg, bid
glucosamine sulfate

The only pharmacoligical agents I seem to be sure to get into my body everyday are nicotine, caffeine, and vino.

At 72, I do not take any pharmaceuticals but I do take a number of supplements- type, brand and dose as determined by my trusty pendulum. I do not ask the pendulum about chocolate, which this woman runs on! I have been environmentally poisoned and detox frequently. I was recently termed "hyperactive" by a couple HS students who were helping me move.

Glyburide, Actos, Nephrocaps, Renegel, Plavix, I don't remember the rest, they're on the other side of the house and I'm too lazy to go look. The problems they cure are high blood sugar, cholesterol, and kidney related problems.

Gin counts doesn't it?

I'm experiencing a prescription drug free period again, having just finished amoxycillin for a chest infection and nurofen for the pulled muscle... been without the fluoxetine (the other name for Prozac) for some time now, which is a two edged sword... it means I'm not depressed but it also means I'm going to be at some point.

Nothing wrong with me that being 4" taller and 10 years younger might cure, except that 10 years ago I didn't know about the dicky ticker that got fixed 5 years ago.

Hm, it's the least I've taken in a longlonglong time. The industrial-sized pill-sorter, I've recently been thinking, looks so funny with only 4 little pills in it. 'Course that's the MAIN one. There are several others with "might-needs."

Gotta:
Diovan
Toprol
Norvasc
(generics thereof)

Might:
Tylenol
Diphenhydramine
Lomotil
Ultracet
Diuretic

Then there are the topicals as needed:
Witch hazel (swimmer's ear)
Cipro Otic (ditto)
Saline (nasal wash, eye wash)
Various anti-itchers

The big 90-day supplies live together against damp in a storage-size super-heavy Ziploc bag, from which I refill the sorters as needed.

If by a med you mean something recommended by a doctor, then 1 aspirin a day, because I had a couple of TIAs (I think they're called) a few years ago.

I have some Viagra, in case I meet someone who wants to get fucked.

Also I put some antibiotic in my ears every morning, to forestall lowgrade infections, and some antipruritic (but I scratch them anyway). And lotion on my fingers & feet.

The only psychotropic drugs I use are caffeine in the morning & alcohol in the evening. They happen to be legal & available without prescription. I suppose that won't last forever, but neither will I.

Meds?

None. I don't believe in taking meds.

I do take various vitamins and dietary supplements, though: Vitamin D, Magnesium Citramate, an anti-oxident, cod liver oil, stuff like that.

What most people need to have and maintain good health (in my opinion) is a complete diet, NOT overeating, getting enough excercise, sunlight, and fresh air, and drinking enough clean water. It also helps to have friends and activities that one finds interesting and enjoyable, of course. Having a Dachshund can help too...but it's a double-edged sword, because the little rascal can cause you a bit of stress now and then... ;-)

Regarding the Dachshund...you probably didn't take him in the recommended manner, Janie.... ;-D

Hey, look, just because I don't believe in taking meds, I'm not saying that belief has to apply to anyone else. We all have the right to our own belief systems.

I might have qualified it this way: I will take pharmaceuticals IF I can find no other way of dealing effectively with a health problem I have. Otherwise, I prefer other methods. I did take pharmaceuticals once, for example, to cure a mild eye infection, and I have taken aspirin on occasion to get rid of a headache.

It's just that in general...I tend to opt for other methods first rather than reaching for a drug of some kind...specially on a regular basis over a lengthy period of time. I do not in general tend to trust the overall effects of pharmaceuticals on bodily health.

I don't like taking meds either, but unfortunately the high blood pressure and non-stop acid reflux has put me on ramipril and bendroflumethiazide, and lanzoprazole. I'm up for a meds review in the next month, and I'll fight tooth and nail if he tries to put me on any more. Going onto daily meds about 5 years ago was the first sign of the onset of late middle age for me - my mum did too, and for the same reasons.

The BP is a bit higher than they would like, but it's up and down all the time anyway. I am sure it's nothing that losing a bit more weight, being more active, getting the house fixed up, sold, and moving to pastures new won't solve. Until then I just put up with the frustrations and angst that recent widowhood, and a house renovation that seems to have stalled have foisted on me!

It don't help when you have a pharmacist for a daughter, either!

Add a one gram dose of vitamin C, a goodly dose of Vitamin B complex (for the nerves, dear) and a multivitamin and mineral tablet - belt, braces and baler twine ? Oh, and let's not forget the cod liver oil

capsule.

This is nothing as compared with the meds. my beloved Erica is on.

Apart from the above, large doese of caffeine at regular intervals.

I used to get terrible weather induced headaches but not since I started drinking GREEN tea. Black tea gives me a migraine.
I detox to keep the environmental chemicals from building up in my bod; if they do, I get tired first and almost a couch potato next. I prefer being hyperactive.
Used Glucosamine to heal the "shin splints" resulting from 11 hours of Bulgarian dancing and a couple months later a sore knee from another 11 hours of Bulgarian dancing. MAGIC! Yeah - the dancing! Also the Glucosamine - but I did not mess with "recommended dose"; I took what the pendulum said to take - lots! And now down to none and the knee is fine.

This statement betrays a lack of knowledge of the process involved in getting drugs out on the market, but then that's why there is no shortage of snake oil peddlers out there getting rich off the public's ignorance.

LH: again we are on the same page. I have something akin to contempt for most of mainstream medicine and pharmaceuticals. Work with seniors who take one med for A and two more to counter the effects of the first one and maybe a couple more to.....
Other than the so called "anti cancer" drugs which might cause.....- even worse thing (I quit that when I read the info) I have not had a pharmaceutical in about 20 years. But I LISTEN to my bod and even my physician in PA did not doubt me. He gave an excellent lecture on reasons for the high costs of (alleged) health care and how the pharmaceutical companies screw the public. With all due respect to Dorothy and Little Hawk I think you are both confusing the marketing practices of "Big Pharma" with the efficacy of modern pharmaceuticals. The advancement of therapeutic agents in recent years has been nothing short of remarkable and many millions, if not billions, of people are enjoying a quality of life that was unavailable to them just a few years ago. It is research scientists who do the heavy lifting in the field, the pharmaceutical companies are the agents for the product, much like agents who manage and exploit musicians, and like them should all be put up against a wall and shot.

The marketing practices of the pharmaceuticals are costly - they cost the consumer. The efficacy is in serious doubt. What do they actually cure? Think about it. Then, really think about it.

The humungous costs of "health" care could be reduced to broken bones and the very few curable illnesses. If the money were spent on cleaning up the environment and teaching people preventive self care, we would still have money left over.

When the nurse practitioner at the cancer clinic responded to my query, "why the increasing incidence of breast cancer" with and immediate, "it's the environment", I started looking at that concept. Sure enough, there is ever increasing evidence.

Money spent on pharmaceuticals when the environment is the cause....

It's the lazy and stupid approach to dealing with public health. Let them live a bad lifestyle...let them get fat, lazy, unhealthy, and sick. Then rush in with the medical fire brigage of drugs, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy...AFTER the damage has been done.

" Let them live a bad lifestyle...let them get fat, lazy, unhealthy, and sick..."

What it really comes down to is this: you can't make people do anything they don't want to do. If you accept that fact, you may live a happier life.

Everything wrong with people is from environmental pollution?

No, the food we eat is safer now than it ever has been. In the past, food spoiled because of poor refrigeration. Until the 1930s we still had ice boxes in cities and damp canvass boxes in the rural areas.

Water? In years gone by, wells were unfiltered and people got whatever amount of lead, arsenic and other minerals that happened to be dissolved in the water. Also no cholorination to kill microbes.

Air pollution? Maybe, but it is not responsible for all of man's ills. Besides, people out here in the rural boonies have exactly the same problems and ailment as everyone else.

Now is a great time to live except for one problem: people. There are too many people and too many of them are violent and antisocial.

Dont ask me the names but:

morning - 1 white and two pink
teatime - two pink
bedtime - two pink two blue

The consultant said last week I have a choice, stay on them and stay healthy (and I feel better at the moment than I have done in years) or, as the 'problem' seems to be going shall 'we'(I had no idea he was taking them too!) come off them and 'see how we go?'.

As much as I like to feel well, I dont like the idea of filling my body with chemicals that I may not need. But the other side of the coin is being chemical free but the possible return to pain, hospital visits, proding and poking.

I didnt believe in taking meds - until there was no choice.

Calcium and Vitamin D to counteract the side effects of Depo-Provera

Albuterol (though when I went to refill my scrip the last time I was told they have taken Albuterol off the market because the propellant is "bad for the environment". Been breathing the shit in since I was about 4, thanksverymuch!)

It's quite true, pdq, that "you can't make people do anything they don't want to do".

Agreed! I am not suggesting making people do anything (except obey the civil laws).

But what I am suggesting is a society and a medical fraternity that would spend a lot more effort in advising people as to what they might do to be healthy....and would provide more incentives and facilities for them to do what is healthy...and would educate them better in that respect...and would provide far better leadership and far better role models for them to aspire to in that respect.

I am suggesting the encouragement of people, not control or regimentation of people.

The present social order actively encourages people to overeat, to eat junk food, to drink soft drinks, to sit on their asses all day long, to indulge themselves in every way possible...and why?

So some business can make money on their physical and behavioural addictions, that's why.

Well, that's what happens in a decadent society, isn't it? And things deteriorate.

****

You are quite right about the overpopulation problem. Again, what is needed to deal with that is better education, a better standard of living and education for the poor (it is the poorest and most ignorant people in a society who always have the highest birthrate), better role models for the young.

If you demonstrate high ideals and self-discipline in front of young children, they will understand and respond in kind. If you demonstrate greed, irresponsibility, carelessness, violence, and waste in front of young children, they will imitate it and they will get lost in it.

As you say, "now is a great time to live". Agreed. There have been many advances. However, there is much we can do to continue improving certain things in society. I'm not suggesting turning the clock back to 1900. That just isn't possible.

Just who were these class of drugs designed for, DARPA, the Pentagon, the Defense Department?

If screwing with people's serotonin is so dangerous they should try a different approach.

GREEN WELLIES, I agree...until there was no alternative but dying, I loathed putting any kind of chemical in my body, though I did have to cope with a heart valve which was either broken from birth or injured by a childhood illness. Those one or two drugs kept me alive while technology grew by leaps and bounds and I was able to get a new valve.

Now, I take drugs to be sure I stay as healthy as possible. I KNOW that sounds like anathema to some. Back when I was writing my op/ed column I wrote a humdinger against letting drug companies advertise (they were not allowed to at the time, remember those days?)...it didn't do any good...they were given the green light and that, to me, is a horrible disservice to all of us.

I used to be like Dorothy and Little Hawk, all natural tinctures, teas, etc. Now I have to be much more careful about what goes in the mix. I am thinking about getting back to making my own kombucha tea and maybe trying some glucosamine.

LH and I are still on the same page.
Since being environmentally poisoned almost ten years ago - walking up one flight of stairs which had just been carpeted; yep, that's all. I almost passed out; I turned white, so I'm told. four and a half years later, I got my health back, by de-toxing. The doctors at occupational health did not have a clue, nor did any other doctors I tried. Staff member at the EPA said, "If you can find help, let me know, my wife has the same problem.

I have read voraciously on the subject. Believe what you like guys. The doctors were hard put to find a cause for my breast cancer (all gone now) due to my life-long healthy life style (I was indignant!); how bout living 17 years in an area of high radiation from uranium mines? Highest incidence of cancer in Canada. OR the study by the U of Texas showing that wherever there is a high level of mercury in the environment, there is a high incidence of autism.

Talk to me about glucosamine, kat. It does me a world of good when I need it.

But every body is different. I know a 90 year old in incredible health who all but lives on sugar and has all her life. No diabetes. She LOVES Sara Lee! Half a piece of her birthday cake and I was stuffing potato chips in me to counteract the sugar.

Hi Kids: So I ask my Doctor(s), "Do I really have to take these?, they're expensive...) Response..."If you don't take these, you will die..." Heartwarming(pardon the pun)

So...
Apo-Carvedilol(25mg)
Apo-Furosemide(40mg)
Coumadin(4mg)
Lanoxin(0.25mg)
Zestril(10mg)
Euro-K(1500mg)
Advair 125 2 puffs per day

This has been going on for nearly a year, but as we say over here, "every day above grass is a good day..." I go back for a check-up and my Doctor(s) tell me, "I'm doing fine"
Q.Well then, how long do I have to keep taking these?
A."Until you die"

Doc says, "see, it's like this, after going through what YOU went through, we find that
1 in 3 die if they don't take the Meds. And if you TAKE the Meds, it's 1 in 20,,,"Yikki Yikki Yay!

So it's "The Breakfast of Champions" for me...Coffee, doughnut, Meds...

Q. Or, As Myron Cohen(I think) said when asked, "How's the job!?
A. "It's a living. If you call this living..."

Now, where's my water so my little pill can make me pee....?
Sorta like having a car, to get to the job, to pay for the car, but what the hey,

I don't do recreactional drinking or drugs, don't think I don't want to. Reading this thread makes me think I should & that I'm missing out on a big secret. Reading this thread through is like being on drugs

I do believe in modern medicine - and prevention.

I grew up with herbs..I understood herbs before understanding the configuration of a western chord.

Before they could be copyrighted (perhaps in the UK they already are) the medicinal qualities of various plants were catalogued in writing - and passed on through oral history. I would say - my current home library - is balanced even between musical-folk-history and folk- herbal-history....the music I purchased and the herb books are legacy.

I am currently blessed with an active, vibrant, disease free life:
Perhaps, it is genetic
Perhaps, it is diet and exercise.
Perhaps, it is prevention and prudently applied herbal cures at needed times

Upon HEED - these are the herbs I grow (and pluck wild in the fields) and most commonly use when in medical distress.

Comfrey
Catnip
Malva
St John's ( in olive oil - basked two weeks in the summer sun - harvest the flowers late June in NA - healing salve)
Wintergreen
Peppermint
Licorice Root
Horehound
Hops
Wormwood
Vallarium
Yarrow,, yarrow and yarrow - all parts and all kinds...flowers, leaves, shoots and roots...depending on need.

In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Friear Lawernce is well versed in plants

O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies
In herbs, plants, stones and their true qualities:
For nought so vile that on the earth doth live
But to the earth some special good doth give,...
Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied;
And vice sometimes by action dignified.
Within the infant rind of this small flower
Poison hath residence and medicine power:

For those that require THC - I consider your situation legit if it is 6 months until verified terminal....for you tortured poor souls ...what can we say???....4:20 comes more than twice a day...

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

I've now got four very vigorous yarrow plants which have been growing for the past five years. Last year, two of them grew to over six feet tall. The other two are doing much better this year than ever before and are already three feet with many buds. In New England, a friend and I went out on St. John's Day to gather St. John's Wort. Put it up in olive oil which it made a beautiful ruby red. Very strong aroma...very good for bruises and such.

Dorothy, you've sparked some memories...I used motherwort, hawthorn berry, and dandelion root tinctures for menopausal symptoms. It got to where I craved the tiny sip of pure water with a few drops of each in it...definitely good for my body at the time.:-)
