UK Festivals 31/7-2/8 & 7/8-9/8 ???

Can any one tell me what folk festivals they'd recommend I hit while I'm over in the UK during the last weekend of July & the first weekend of August. Trad fests would be just dandy but any folk would do in a pinch.

Thanks
Barry

That's a busy time for festivals, aswell as Sidmouth (highly recommended) there's also:

Stokes Bay 29 Jul - 2nd Aug

Broadstairs 7th - 14th August

Dartmoor 7th - 9th August

and a few days further on:

Bideford 10th - 16th August

You coming over early then Barry? Please visit if you get a chance!!

Personally I think Broadstairs is brilliant - link above

Warwick is my favourite festival. There is something for everyone, concerts, dances, workshops, sessions, singarounds, kids activities and as far as I know the swimming pool is still available to weekend ticket holders.

A nice flat site with good showers and a shuttle bus to towm which is only 10 minutes walk anyway. AND the music from the main marquee is not too loud!!

I'd recommend it.

Warwick has a castle and is close to Stratford on Avon...

Sidmouth, Dartmoor and Bideford are all in Devon, south west of Trowbridge.

Dartmoor follows on from Sidmouth and is close geographically - they're a wonderful contrast, because one is a large week-long festival in a generally unspoiled Regency seaside town, and the other is a small weekend village festival started by Bob Cann, with step-dancing and broom-dancing workshops followed by competitions, for children and adults.

Thanks all for your imput, please keep at it.
I'll be performing at the Scarborough Seafest July 24-26 with mudcatter Ken Schatz as "Finn & Haddie". If all goes well maybe Neil we'll make a plan with Neil for the 3 of us for next yr, provided you think well enough of us by then.
We'll most likely hit ground on Tues or Wed (22nd or 23rd) so we're looking for any singing clubs, venues or events post festival between then & Friday. Ken's heading back to the US right after the festival on either Mon or Tues, lack of getting booked anywhere else & he works, so time is money. Me, I'm retired & the family wants a vacation so I get to stay longer for reasons of their mental health.

"My guru always said", Thanks for the invite, I'd love to hook up & visit & sing with you.
My knowledge of the countryside is limited, I'll be meeting up with Carole & Andrew at the Seafest they'll be there performing too (as will my buddy Deb Cowen) & I haven't heard from Murray MacLeod recently but he has threatened to head south from Scotland to visit me at the Seafest, so that would be grand also. If other catters are going to the Seafest (2 Black Sheep & a Stallion???) a mudgather would be great. I might/hope to be hooking up with Andrew & Carole for a musical jaunt about the land, we'll have to see how that works out. So maybe with all your input we can lay out some kind of plan.

Thank you all for your well needed advise. Please continue, anywhere in the UK might be a possibility

Oh, Jacqui, are you still planning on being in the UK around the same time? When & where?

If you're into Old Time American string band stuff, the Foaotmad a week-long summer camp starts on Fri Aug 7 at Sacrewell Farm near Peterborough. Just pay camping fees direct to Foaotmad rep on site for a big discount. There'll be maybe 50-60 musicians getting together for lots of tune sessions - fiddles, banjos, guitars, mandolins, basses, the odd lap dulcimer. There'll be a campfire in the evening to sit around, and a barn if it rains. I've been going for 11 years and I'd come back from anywhere to avoid missing it.
Cheers
Ray

I forgot to mention that there's a singing & camping weekend at the Trout in Lechlade during the first weekend of August too. Wonder if Andrew & Carole might like to come along too, I'm sure that between us we could arrange a tent if you were able to go Barry.
