Scared me. I have a friend named Bill Day, a cartoonist, who couldn't possibly be that old. Happy birthday to yours, anyway.

Just after #60 Bill said he wasn't celebrating the years anymore, just the decades. So when # 61 came around I made the following post where I said I'd wait til 2009. Now2009 has arrived and I think the last line of that post still works and like "folk" music, has stood the test of time.............

Subject: BILL D.'s 'Sorta' BIRTHDAY -late
From: catspaw49 - PM
Date: 22 May 00 - 07:55 PM

Now I know the ol' poop only celebrates at ten year intervals now, but its only because he's too cheap to go out to dinner. PLUS...WE missed it by a couple of days here gang...it was May 20 (I think?). Anyway.........
HAPPY BIRFUSDAY from Cletus, Paw, Buford, and the Reg boys...AND Cleigh O'Possum............I'll wait til 2009 to say it myself. I won't sing Happy Birthday either, but we'll do some song in your honor....Lessee here......hmmmm..................HEY!!!! I got it!!! How about, "When the Parade Passes By."

I would like to say something nice about you, but nothing comes to mind except, "Geez, what a piece of work that boy is!"

That you were, that you are, and that may you remain, for additional decades to come! I'd also wish you "many happy returns of the day" but I have no idea what that means................

awwww.. shucks, folks! I thought I had sneaked by....and this wasn't even started by any of the "usual suspects", but by Michele of our local Open Sing....(didn't know you read Mudcat, Michele!)

I have already celebrated this sterling occasion in fine style...by going to the dentist for a reconstruction of one of my remaining teeth! (Too durned old to throw all the $$$$ he says I oughta at 'em.)

EJ...wore the shirt 3 days LAST week. It's 'resting'...(I can taste Connie's burritos every time I see it)

'Spaw... gee, you make a feller feel SO....ummmm... bemused. Cletus & the Reg boys don't do special stuff for just anyone - I think I am honored.

To everSong? "When the Parade Passes By"?...naawwww.. "Old & Gray & Only in the Way" or "Too Old to Cut the Mustard"

Amos... getting ahead of you? Just blazing a trail of prime examples for you 'young' whippersnappers to follow. Do note that several others have praised my logic & good sense. I'll remind you at odd times...

WSI/Susan.. my basic wisdom is enhanced by age. A couple other things may suffer, but.....

Emma... I think I am close to photographing the bottles and getting rid of the bulk...*grin*... the contents are more important now..

Ranger1.... turn that picture to the wall..now!

Leadfingers/Terry... I DO hope you get back.

To all who say you can't believe my age.... wait till I see you and forget your name!

To everyone I have already forgotten and all those who share this strange journey thru the world in Virtual Mudcat Chaos.... thanks for being here and becoming part of it all.

and by the way...this is a day of strange serendipitous facts.

I had to go to the dentist today, as I said. I had to write them a check. The # on the check was 1939 - do the arithmetic.   Yep, I had to date my check with my birthday!

Also, today is the 35th anniversary of the day I was wakened at 5:30 AM by the telephone. When I stumbled out of bed to answer it, my Mother's voice said, "Happy Birthday!"
I said.."Hunnmm? Mom? What...it's...uhh,,,"
She said...."Well, 35 years ago, you got ME up at 5:30 in the morning. I figgered it was time I returned the favor."

I'm starting to get the point...

I remember a Saturday Night Live piece that came out in the 70s, and it was a pseudo-documentary called The Acid Generation! It featured interviews with several 80 year olds talking about their experiences in the sixties, and I remember one old geezer saying "Hendrix was amazing that day! But of course I was ripped on four tabs of blotter." Hilarious at the time. Now...maybe getting a little too close for comfort.

Happy birthday to Bill, Mudcat's William F. Buckley, standing athwart History (and music), shouting :"Stop!"'--as the perfect gentleman.

On second thought, scratch the part about William F. Buckley--unless you can be a moderate to left-leaning WFB--- but don't scratch the "perfect gentleman" part.   The only time Bill pushes back is if you ask him to sing "Key of R" more than once a year.

I 'spects so.... 31 years straight now. I'll take many UN-birthday songs...

"Pshaw, Bill, you're just getting broken in."

Ahhh.. I KNEW there was a reason some parts weren't woring right.

"...scratch the part about William F. Buckley-"

Yes...that's best. I used to sit and complain how Buckley was smart enough to NOT have been conservative. How about Solomon?
Or Euripides --"The wisest men follow their own direction."

Or Alfred North Whitehead? who said: "Strive for simplicity, but learn to mistrust it."

Yeah...I'll be them. All at once... *giggle*
