20 May 09 - 09:24 PM (#2637142) Subject: The New Cornish Songster From: Matthew Edwards To those of us who follow the adventures of Lizzie Cornish the opening of a Mudcat thread on the Cornish Nightingale seemed to offer a long overdue tribute. Especially so when it appeared that the bird in question has actually never been spotted in the Duchy. Disappointingly it seems that the original poster merely wanted information about a song. I believe that our Lizzie's selfless devotion to Show of Hands is so far over and beyond the call of duty, common sense, or the rules of English grammar that she deserves some kind of recognition. A song in her honour seems the very least we can offer. All the very best songs include a talking bird, so I hope Lizzie won't object to being depicted as a warbling songster. I sang this song at the Beech in Chorlton last night where I hoped it would be swiftly forgotten. However I was asked to post the words on Mudcat – but as it was clear that some of the words made no sense at all to the audience (or to me!) at the time this version differs somewhat from what they heard. The tune of course is the rousing anthem of 'Trelawny' (with most sincere apologies to the Reverend R S Hawker). Matthew wrote a clever, witty song that poked gentle and appropriate fun at LCs lengthy, many have said relentless, advocacy of S of H. I was flattered that Matthew brought it to our Singaround at The Beech. It's difficult to say how many people fully understood it, but that goes for a lot of songs. The chorus was sung with enthusiasm and a bit of harmony and we all look forward to more songs from Matthew. If you want to see a tyrade read all that was written on that thread before Matthew wrote and released his song. Many of us get beyond ourselves on here and many others relish the opportunity to tell us when. Cheers L in C |

It's very fitting that you used that term though Irene. I'll tell you for why. Way back, when Show of Hands CD, 'Witness' had come out, Diane and I were having our usual "It's GREAT!" "It's CRAP!" 'discussion' on the BBC. Shortly after that, SoH's manager came over to me on Myspace, to gently ask if I'd kindly lay low and stop talking about the CD, as they wanted others to judge it for themselves. I was only too pleased to help, and so I said for them not to worry, because from then on it would be 'all quiet on the South Western front' A short while later, I was sent a message from Steve, via a mutual friend, thanking me for keeping quiet (which he didn't have to do at all, bless him) and saying that those words had given him some thoughts about a new song... A few months after that, on Steve's first ever solo CD 'Cruel River' the song arrived..and you can read the words of 'All Quiet On The Western Front' right here, on a site which Sam and I made: 'Cruel River' Cool, the way that happened, huh? :0) Steve's myspace |
