I hadn't realised how old this song was. Written by Thomas Davis 1814 - 1835, one of the founders of the Young Ireland Movement. Not a bad song IMHO.

Thanks Mr O - I should have given the attribution which is Soodlum's 100 Irish Ballads. Clearly the two tunes are not the same. I respect that your information is impeccable, and would therefore refer to the version I posted as 'Modern version - Composer Unknown'.

For biographical details of almost all Irish poets and songwriters prior to 1900 see O'Donahue's 'The Poets of Ireland'. For copies of all Irish tunes known prior to 1856 (except "Gamiorum") see 'Sources of Irish Traditional Music', 2 vols., 1998.
