FATHER'S SONG
(Ewan MacColl)

That's another day gone by, son, close your eyes
Now the moon is chasing clouds across the sky
Go to sleep and have no fear, son
For your mum and dad are near, son
And the giant is just a shadow on the wall

Go to sleep, and when you wake it will be light
There's no need to fear the darkness of the night
It's not like the dark you find, son
In the depth of some men's minds, son
That defies the daily coming of the dawn

Lie easy in your bed and grow up strong
You'll be needing all your strength before too long
For you'll soon be on your way, son
Fighting battles every day, son
With an enemy who thinks he owns the world

Stop your crying now; let daddy dry your tears
There's no bogeyman to get you, never fear
There's no ogres, wicked witches
Only greedy sons of bitches
Who are waiting to exploit your life away

Don't you let 'em buy you out or break your pride
Don't you let yourself be used then cast aside
If you listen to their lying
They will con you into dying
You won't even know that you were once alive

No more talking now, it's time to go to sleep
There are answers to your questions but they'll keep
Go on asking while you grow, son
Go on asking till you know, son
And then send the answers ringing through the world

There's an absolutely brilliant version of this on "Flat Earth" by Patterson Jordan Dipper.

Scraps of Paper

These days my life seems somehow like a tired old cliché
A bad movie scene that just goes on and on
With dialogue like " It's so sad how fast time slips away"
Or "You never really miss them until they're gone"
Funny how those old clichés come true
I never thought I'd miss him, but I do

Chorus:
My father died in summer, and all he left behind
Were little scraps of paper, little scraps of rhyme
I read them and felt something inside me break
And angrily cried out "Too late, too late!"
Surely there must be something better?
Surely there must be something better?

He and I were always strangers, searching for someone
I was looking for a hero, and he a friend
So while I searched for my father, he was looking for his son
So strangers we remained until the end
But the man who wrote his heart into those rhymes
I know he could have been a good friend of mine

So I sit here where he lived and died as the ghosts around me weave
And evening shadows lengthen on the wall
And in this dark and empty room, it's so easy to believe
That he never lived at all
But the little scraps of paper in my hand
Proved he lived to me - the father and the man

I think we have other threads on this topic, but here are a few that I do for Dad's Day (in addition to some that have already been listed):

My Guy
That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine
Daddy's Hands (Holly Dunn)
Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast
Don't Jump Off the Roof, Dad (Garrison Keillor's version)
When Father Papered the Parlour
My Heart Belongs to Daddy
Something Wonderful (From The King And I)
Love Without End, Amen (George Strait)
Oh, My Papa
Dance With My Father (sung by Luther Vandross)
Kids! (From 'Bye Bye Birdie')
Grandpa (Tell Me 'bout the Good Old Days) (The Judds)
Grandfather's Clock

PS, Isn't the song from The Fantasticks titled "Plant a Radish"?

There's another song the 2 fathers sing in that musical about their kids: (They Did It 'Cause) We Said No.

Then there's the lullaby that goes
"Hush, little baby, don't say a word.
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird ... "

I forgot these two schmaltzy ones:

Daddy's Little Girl
and
Daddy Dear (Little Child), which was recorded by Cab Calloway and his daughter Lael - among others)
Daughter:
Daddy dear, tell me please, is the world really round?
Tell me, where is the bluebird of happiness found?
Tell me, why can't I fly like the birds in the sky?
Daddy dear, tell me why are there tears in your eyes?

Dad:
Little one, yes, it's true, yes, the world's really round

A Father and a Son
Loudon Wainwright III

When I was your age I was just like you,
And just look at me now; I'm sure you do.
But your grandfather was just as bad
And you should have heard him trash his dad.
Life's no picnic, that's a given:
My mom's mom died when my mom was seven;
My mom's father was a tragic guy,
But he was so distant and nobody knows why.
Now, your mother's family, you know them:
Each and every one a gem,
Each and every one a gem.

When I was your age I was a mess;
On a bad day I still am, I guess.
I think I know what you're going through;
Everything changes but nothing is new.
And I know that I'm miserable; can't you see?
I just want you to be just like me.
Boys grow up to be grown men
And then men change back into boys again.
You're starting up and I'm winding down;
Ain't it big enough for us both in this town?
Say it's big enough for us both in this town.

When I was your age I thought I hated my dad
And that the feeling was a mutual one that we had;
We fought each other day and night:
I was always wrong; he was always right.
But he had the power and he needed to win;
His life half over, mine about to begin.
I'm not sure about that Oedipal stuff,
But when we were together it was always rough.
Hate is a strong word; I want to back-track;
The bigger the front, then the bigger the back;
The bigger the front, then the bigger the back.

Now you and me are me and you,
And it's a different ballgame though not brand-new.
I don't know what all of this fighting is for;
But we're having us a teenage/middle-age war.
I don't want to die and you want to live;
It takes a little bit of take and a whole lot of give.
It never really ends though each race is run,
This thing between a father and a son.
Maybe it's power and push and shove,
Maybe it's hate but probably it's love,
Maybe it's hate but probably it's love.

open mike asked, above, whether Father's Day is celebrated in countries other than the US. In Australia, it's celebrated in September. I'm not sure whether this is because there's more daylight in September, or because we already have the Queen's Birthday in June, or some other reason. My father being in the US, I used to buy a Father's Day card when they were in the stores in Australia in September and then mail it to him in June.

Anyway, Judy Collins wrote (and performed, and recorded) a song [My Father] which started, "My father always promised me/That we would live in France...."

Eric Bogle did No Use For Him, about his father losing his job when he (the father) was in his 50s (I think).

John Dengate does a very nice song about his father, but it's unlikely to be available outside Australia.

Anyone have the lyrics to a Father's Day Song by LOKI.   The tune is the Major General song from Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance.   One off the lines goes "He made me do my homework when I wanted to go out and play" I found the song on the Archive site, here:

Subject: Lyr Add: IF IT WASN'T FOR YOUR FATHER
From: Jim Dixon

Found this on Spotify.

IF IT WASN'T FOR YOUR FATHER
Written by Joan Edwards & Lynn Duddy.
As recorded by Arthur Godfrey, 1950.

Time's a-flyin'; now it's May.
In May, you know, comes Mother's Day.
But, mother, think of all the bother
You'd have missed without dear father.

Father! No one seems to realize
That fathers are the most neglected guys.
So do ev'rything you can.
You owe a lot to your old man.

You should always love your papa.
Treat him right and treat him proper,
'Cause without your papa, you would be nowhere. (You'd be nowhere.)
If he hadn't wed your mother,
Would your brother be your brother?
You can thank your lucky stars that pop was there. (That pop was there.)

If it wasn't for your father would your mother be your mother?
So remember dad on Mother's Day.
(Father! No one seems to realize
That fathers are the most neglected guys.)

Now if you look just like your father,
And you think that it's a bother,
'Cause he isn't handsome and he isn't tall, (He isn't tall.)
If your face makes you unhappy,
Do not blame it on your pappy,
'Cause without himm you'd 'a' had no face at all. (No face at all.)

If it wasn't for your father would your mother be your mother?
So remember dad on Mother's Day.
(Father! No one seems to realize
That fathers are the most neglected guys.)

If he'd been a little stronger,
And held out a little longer,
Then today he might have been a single guy. (A single guy.)
Then it's safe to be assumin'
That you wouldn't be a human;
You would only be a gleam in mother's eye. (In mother's eye.)

If it wasn't for your father would your mother be your mother?
So remember dad on Mother's Day.
(Father! No one seems to realize
That fathers are the most neglected guys.)

Now if your ma lived in Dakota,
And your pa in Minnesota,
And they both had wed but not to one another, (Heaven forbid!)
Then it's possible that, mister,
By today, you'd be your sister,
And the guy you think you are might be your brother. (What do you say?)

So be grateful to your pappy; make him happy.
Once again we'd like to say:
If it wasn't for your father would your mother be your mother?
So remember dad on Mother's Day.

[Also recorded by Dorothy Shay]

My Old Man

Ian Dury

My old man wore three piece whistles
He was never home for long
Drove a bus for London Transport
He knew where he belonged
Number 18 down to Euston
Double decker move along
Double decker move along
My old man

Later on he drove a Roller
Chauffeuring for foreign men
Dropped his aitches on occasion
Said "Cor Blimey!" now and then
Did the crossword in the Standard
At the airport in the rain
At the airport in the rain
My old man

Wouldn't never let his guv'nors
Call him 'Billy', he was proud
Personal reasons make a difference
His last boss was allowed
Perhaps he had to keep his distance
Made a racket when he rowed
Made a racker when he rowed
My old man
My old man

My old man was fairly han'some
He smoked too many cigs
Lived in one room in Victoria
He was tidy in his digs
Had to have an operation
When his ulcer got too big
When his ulcer got too big
My old man

Seven years went out the window
We met as one to one
Died before we'd done much talking
But relations had begun
All the while we thought about each other
All the best mate from your son
All the best mate from your son
My old man
My old man
