Listening to "Rake" probably one of the most powerful songs I ever heard and another great one that died way too soon.

Townes Van Zandt Rake

                Rake By townes van zandt
Proofread and authorized by jeanene van zandt

I used to wake and run with the moon
I lived like a rake and a young man
I covered my lovers with flowers and wounds
My laughter the devil would frighten
The sun she would come and beat me back down
But every cruel day had it's nightfall
I'd welcome the stars with wine and guitars
Full of fire and forgetful

My body was sharp the dark air clean
And outrage my joyful companion
Whisperin' women how sweet did they seem
Kneelin' for me to command them
And time was like water but I was the sea
I'd have never noticed it passin'
Except for the turnin' of night into day
And the turnin' of day into cursin'

You look at me now, and don't think I don't know
What all your eyes are a sayin'
Does he want us to believe these ravings and lies
They're just tricks that his brains been a playin'?
A lover of women he can't hardly stand
He trembles he's bent and he's broken
I've fallen it's true but I say unto you
Hold your tongues until after I've spoken

I was takin' my pride in the pleasures I'd known
I laughed and thought I'd be forgiven
But my laughter turned 'round eyes blazing and
Said my friend, we're holdin' a wedding
I buried my face but it spoke once again
The night to the day we're a bindin'
And now the dark air is like fire on my skin
And even the moonlight is blinding

Dan, knowing your sense of humor, if you don't get a charge out of the thread I'm linking, I'll be surprised. Its long but keeps getting better and better as it goes along. So sit back and read some good and funny stuff about TVZ on the somewhat bizarre Pancho and Lefty thread.

OMG
I can't breathe, I am laughing too hard, that is priceless Spaw
... I have to take a break I am gong to fall over ...

Awesome, thank you ... awesome !!!
can't breathe

Death by laughter

on another note: I had to been living in a cave. It wasn't until 2 months ago that I heard my first song by him after someone commented to me that my stuff reminded them of Van Zandt ... then Spaw said the same thing ... the more of him I listen to him the more blown away I am by his work.

And on top of it all .. there is this priceless thread that makes me fall over with laughter

In opening for TVZ at the Earl of Old Town in Chicago 1979 I can't help but be reminded of a quote out of the book 'Learning To Fly. "You're just a mean drunk, Townes." That he was, that he was. Funny, how Blaze Foley who befriended me in Chicago around the same time was considered a loud, obnoxious hanger-on to TVZ's coattails. He taught me "Election Day' and gave me permission to write a 3d verse to it. I did and it's long forgotten. At the time Townes was considerd 'the real deal' and Blaze was a joke. Towns was a privledged, moneyed snot w/a great gift which he squaudered, mostly. Blaze was from the streets and came up hard. Ultimately, his songs are being discovered and he's taking his place among the greats of the era. Prine, Guy Clark, VanZant, Foley. Personally, wouldn't give ya $0.30 for Clark OR Van Zant as people. John's John and worth his weight in gold, but the diamond was undoubtedly Blaze Foley. Just took everybody else over 30 years to catch up. He lived every word because he had no options, TVZ lived every word as a response to his. THAT'S the difference between privledge and privation. Townes makes one think. Blaze makes one FEEL. And Tom Dundee was better, lesser known and more literate than ALL of 'em. Same w/Micheal Smith. Not to mention Al Day. Dig a little deeper.
