BS: You don't mean that... (word game)

Subject: BS: You don't mean that...
From: Joe_F

This is a game that was played by graduate students at Caltech around 1960. It strikes me that it is well adapted to the Internet.

In conversation, someone happens to emphasize a certain word, and there is a lull afterward. Another participant starts the game by saying "You don't mean that; you mean..." and gives a definition, characterization, or synonym of another word that sounds like the given one, one way or another. Someone else (the first person or a third one) guesses (but does not mention) that word, thinks of one that sounds like that one, and continues "You don't mean that; you mean...". The game goes on until someone is stumped, and only then are the words in the chain revealed. It often turns out that the chain has gone several links beyond the first wrong guess.

For instance:

I will try to be concise.
You don't mean that; you mean repentant.
You don't mean that; you mean shorten.
You don't mean that; you mean a silly machine.
You don't mean that; you mean....

Spaw has it covered perfectly as far as I'm concerned.

Nothing more really needs to be said.

Which prompts the question I now ask myself: "Why did I even post here?"

God knows.

Or does He?

Or does She?

And if so, then what?

And should I apologize for even mentioning the word "God" at all, as it might offend someone?

Naw. I always like to quote Mick Jagger in these kind of situations:

"Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke."

gone several links beyond, indeed.

03 Jun 09 - 11:05 PM (#2647894)
Subject: RE: BS: You don't mean that...
From: heric

In the example given, the starting word is the simple two syllable word concise, with its common prefix. Ten people on acid or pot could take a round, and as long as the last guy says a "con" word, it doesn't matter if anybody guessed the interim hidden words. The only way to play accurately would be for everybody to write each hidden word for later scoring, and if you're stoned fat chance that's gonna happen.

But if you have a smart ass in the crowd, and in one of the early rounds uses the second syllable -ise/-ite/-act/-tion to craft his hidden word, then uses a "definition, characterization, or synonym" of that, it should fall apart right quick.

(Somebody could luck out in an interim round and get back in the groove.)

I'm not sure if I've been pissing you off, Joe, but I'm not trying to. The concept is interesting and it would have been nice to see it work on a thread but it didn't. Still I believe you had extended sessions where it went a surprsing number of rounds. I'm not saying you were just drunk or stoned and it wasn't working. All I'm doing after thinking on this (and to phrase it in a perhaps less obnoxious way), is conjecturing that extended successful rounds may be related to the group being subconciously attuned to a pattern. If someone is far away from the group mindset, the hidden words they dream up, and the huge source of material(definitions, characterizations, or synonyms) to choose clues from would probably knock the game out earlier.

This reminds me of Stick Quiz. It'splayed like this: One person gets to hold the stick, and asks each of the others a question. If they get it wrong, he gets to hit them with the stick.
Here's an example...
Stick man- "What number am I thinking of?"
Player- "Three?"
Stickman- "No". (whack)

This game is lots of fun if you have the stick, and is way simpler than You Don't Mean That.

SPB: No, the word (or phrase) you think of & characterize is supposed to *sound* like the word that the previous player characterized but did not say. See the example in my posting of 01 Jun.

However, it seems there are many people whose minds don't work that way. Maybe you have to have been a graduate student.

Joe F ... With some instruction this could be grand.

Work with me on this....given the example immediately above:
STick to STuck is correct?
Stuck to SMelled is correct?

My contribution ROUGH (connection being smooth ended sticks were used for cleaning up A-Hole poop when crapping in the woods before TP)has nothing to do with sounding like a previous word.

Therefore...a better contribution would have been my first choice....SMooth End of the Stick? Because it deals with a stick but is closer to the original sound.

Right?

Gargoyle
