Song Circle at SINSULL's June 27

01 Jun 09 - 09:16 AM (#2645513)
Subject: Song Circle at SINSULL's June 27
From: SINSULL

It's been forever since we all just sat around and sang. So plan on June 27.
I will provide wine and beer, beds, and assorted goodies. Who's in? What are you bringing to the feast?

You will be required to sing one song we haven't heard before FROM YOU. So get busy.

A July Song Circle with Chance and Suzette will be on the 18th - it conflicts with the Press Room shanty sing but maybe some of you can come up to Maine afterwards.

Haven't cleared it with Linn, but I'm quite sure we'll be there.

I actually just finished learning a song I started on forty five years ago. But maybe I'll try to come up with several songs you haven't heard yet from me - Tom

Just mark me horribly confused in Portland. I see references to the 18th--the 18th is a Thursday and we don't usually do things on a Thursday? I might be able to be there but will be in Portsmouth all day that day for a course, so might not.........; and there is to be a regular song circle on the 27th at Sins - correct -- we will certainly try and attend that....

Note to all - be afraid. Be very afraid. I have been "organizing". Each of you will go home with a lovely memento of the evening - maybe a grab bag.

No ma'am, thank you anyway. I'll just sit out in the apple orchard where it's safe.

I'm thinking a Maine seafood dinner before the Song Circle on 7/18. Any ideas?

Dunstan School Restaurant, RT. 1, west Scarborough.Full menu. Baked on the spot turkey, ham, roast beef, shrimp, fried clams, baked haddock or sole, and you may have a lobster for another $8.00.
Don't go there unless you are famished. The last time we were there the price was $12.00 each, but they may have raised the price for the summer.
It's still my favorite restaurant.

If all you want is seafood, The Clam Bake, in Pine Point, Scarborough.

Subject: RE: Song Circle at SINSULL's June 27
From: Bat Goddess

Let's clarify the thread creep a bit -- June 27 is the date of Mary's song circle; July 18 is the date the Shivers will be in lobster-land.

Alas, neither Tom nor I can attend the July 18th evening date -- it's the regular third Saturday of the month sea music singaround at The Press Room in Portsmouth -- to come up afterwards (especially with me having to work the next day) is just too much -- and Tom's heart gets cranky about it (as evidenced by the quarterly read-outs of his defibrillator).

But...if Chance and Suzette are around FRIDAY evening (July 17th), I will forego the regular weekly Press Room session (Tom doesn't have that luxury as he has to maintain discipline at the session) and come to South Portland after work. I haven't seen the Shivers in four years and have been looking forward to it.

All that being said, Tom and I will be there on the 27th, despite Mary's threats of gifts to beware of. (As if it hasn't happened before...but wait til she she's what I've found for HER birthday!) We'll have to take off somewhat early the next morning as I have to open Sears Optical at noon.

John - I LOVE your singing and am truly sorry to miss......hope you make it to Maine again this year......

Verdict is still out on us for the 27th -- shutting down my entire operations for a week to party with family in early July is going to take some real planing for.....

Just to add confusion to this thread, Alison Freeman and I have booked Barry and Neil(Finn & Haddie) for a concert at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath on Saturday, July 11, unfortunately the same evening as John Roberts. But we generally don't get anyone from the Portland area to the concerts we have at the Maritime Museum anyway. It's just that we'll be missing John Roberts.

Most sad to say that Linn and I will be unable to join the illustrious company tonight after all.

An exceptionally vicious onslaught of allergies have left my sinuses stuffed and my voice on holiday. Dr. gave me expensive nasal spray and advice to avoid talking. I could not maintain a vow of silence were I to be with you good people; it was difficult at last night's session with some not-so-good people.

Have a great time, sing one for us. See you at the John Roberts HC - Tom & Linn

I guess Jacqui and I will just have to drink this champagne (Yup! Shaw's did the half price thing and I got it for $25 from 50+)all by ourselves. It doesn't keep well, you know. And Jacqui is driving so I will have to limit her consumption...

Champagne!!! And GOOD stuff, too! And I won't be able to bring the stuffed squirrel for possible identification from the knowledgeable company as well.

(I KNOW the birthday gifts are probably unescapable.)

Besides the soaker hose for Maeve, the insulated coffee pot (so the first pot of Sunday morning's coffee can be kept warm while a second pot is immediately set to brew) and the book (Monsignor Quixote) is also in the car. Well, they'll all keep until July 11th, I suppose.

Tom and I will also grab today to celebrate our wedding anniversary (yesterday -- 27 years), since otherwise it wouldn't have been celebrated because of commitments until Wednesday. We usually celebrate with a bottle of champagne -- but this year it sure won't be a 50 buck bottle!

Tom's napping...being grumpy about not having a voice is exhausting.

I just came in from yanking weeds in the flower beds (what's left of them after several years of neglect) up and down the driveway. Some of 'em were bigger than the plants that were SUPPOSED to be there! Still need to get up on the bank of the rockery and work down from there.

I'm sweaty, caked with dirt (but it's nice garden dirt!), I've prolly just washed off all the bug stuff, and I could start another garden with the dirt under my nails. Sigh. Haven't come near to touching the beds, etc. out back.

At least it's not raining...

Now I'm going back out with the spray cleaner and a handful of paper towels and clean the rain gunge and residue off the table on the deck. THEN I'm gonna mix myself a Campari and soda and maybe relax a bit (while looking around and feeling guilty about all the yard work that still needs to be done; sigh).

Oh, and I better find the anniversary card that I haven't written out yet (or rubberstamped) and the bottle of Flag Hill (the local winery) Marechal Foch I picked up for Tom.

Linn

Surprisingly, the mosquitoes are all biting other people this year. Lot's of mud, and I'm a wimp, but otherwise, it's fine here in Altamont/Albany. I hope y'all are having fun.

(The free breakfast buffet had cheesy eggs, sausage, waffles, cereal, fruit and other stuff--WHOO-HOO!)

SINSULL got to sleep in and make her own coffee - no overnight guests if you don't count Seamus.
We had a lovely evening that ended early but included a great meal and some wonderful music.
Charlie passed around a preliminary copy of a book he is readying for publishing - and it is not all sea music! LOL He and Judy started a Tramp theme that took off led to a Barbara Allen medley and what else???
Nice, simple, fun evening. Made up for the crappy champagne.

Sinsull-

It really was a nice relaxing evening, and excellent food!

Loved your Appalachian Barbara Allen, which provoked Lady Margaret from me. It was Jacqui, wasn't it, who began the "tramp medley" with Tramp on the Street?

I also led Evening Shadows Fall, inspired by my Ethiopia revisit.

The closest song to nautical was when JudyB led Port o' Dreams. She also led History Man by Les Barker. And Jacqui led The Sun is Burning.

We didn't do any Michael Jackson songs.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Micca,
I foolishly took your advice re: cheap wine and bought (at half price) a $50 bottle of champagne. I should have bought the cheap stuff. This wasn't Brut; it was Brutal. I swear to you, aside from the two - three sips taken to taste it, it went down the drain.

I sang Tramp On the Street. What started the Tramp theme?

Charley started the tramp theme with the C Fox Smith song about the tramp. I followed with Room For The Poor.
