Anyone going to Gateway to Southwell?

We're intending to go to the Gateway to Southwell festival this weekend.
Anyone else likely to be there? It's a good line up and not outrageously priced.

Mary and I will be there playing for Pig Dyke Molly.
We're not booked to sing - just as well, as the Molly will keep us pretty busy...

Might have known you would be in the Beer Tent :-)

Pig Dyke Molly - one of my favourites.

I might make it for part of the weekend, but not sure yet when that will be.

Unfortunately I won't be there - I was working in the box office last year and it was a blast. Wish I could be there again this year.

Have fun everyone,

Deirdre

Great festival. Everyone who goes is likely to be impressed.

Se the craft fair for a great selection of previously-cherished books on folk music, folk song, folklore, folklife.

End of plug.

Yes I will be there.

First time for me. I'll be dancing with Rattlejag Morris which will keep me busy in the daytime.

Am I likely to find any singing going on - I dont mean concerts. The website does make one mention of 'singers welcome' at the Bramley Apple, but even that looked more like a concert. Does any singing go on informally anywhere?

Good to see a few friends and acquaintances going, and performing too! Have a good 'un Sooz & Mr. Sooz, Goldengob and His Mardy-Bugger Mate (LOL!), Muppitz, Villan, Acorn4.

I'll be boring the arses off some folks in Buckinghamshire.

We've just got home and scraped the thick of the mud off after a wonderful weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed playing to a full marquee on Friday and then experienced some stunning performances, saw old friends and made new ones - what could be better?

And can I add a tribute to the organisation. It takes good organisation to survive rain like that.

(An absorbant campsite helps). I did my "Help Moor and Coast" bit with two fish and chips and an egg sandwich and some tea.

And I do like the "Spinach, Mushroom and Blue Cheese" pizza from Pan de Mania.

We only went on the Sunday - it rained and rained and rained. The concerts were brilliant, as were the stewards, the food was OK, the toilets were awful.

But - we were not allowed to stay in the main marquee between concerts but had to go outside to stand in the wet and cold. It was totally miserable.

If Cambridge can let people stay in the main marquee all day, why can't other festivals?

i understand your' point as to why couldn't you stay in the marquee all day, i would like to say that ron would have probably been asked to kick you out by either the comitee or the artists tht were soundchecking. although he would have PROBABLY found it funny he also would want to do his best by the festival, which is to keep you safe as well as happy.it is much easier to clean upi after a concert if the mrquee is empty rather than sitting on peoples laps as you fall over.

I get your point - but it was pretty miserable having to stand in the rain for 2 hours.

Well there were alternatives.

The traders tent was empty in the afternoon and the traders spent most of their time selling to each other. I know I was one.

Some people spent time in the beer tent. A stage had been put up there and sessions both arranged and impromptu seemed to be going on.

There were events in the kids tent - I know I saw them busy as I went past.

There was a second stage with events all afternoon. And I looked outside a few times and saw very few people standing around.

It was one of the best beer tents I've been to. Saturday afternoon listening to Steamchicken doing their New Orleans style Jazz was tremendous.

What a great place Southwell is, good pubs, great architecture and a festival well worth going to.

Great atmosphere at our gig on Saturday night.

It was a great atmosphere and the Festival has made enormous strides in the few years it's been running.

Just a mention for Keith Donnelly and Flossie Malavialle who worked their socks off and seemed to be absolutely everywhere keeping people in good spirits.

It was a good festival - one of the best I've been to.

I did go into the traders' tent for at least 10 minutes. You just feel that everyone's eyes are on you when it's empty. I spent a long time deliberating over whether or not to buy a pair of shoes.

I was one of those 'very few' people. We were the dripping dejected couple standing under the small canopy by the smoothie stall. They did a very nice warming cup of coffee there. Eventually we managed to squeeze into the area with tables. I didn't know that there were seats in the bar, though we enjoyed the music coming from the tent.

I don't mean to nit pick. It's just that festival organisers ask for feedback - and then get narky when some of the feedback is not to their liking. I know that most festival organisers make you leave the marquee in between concerts - I don't know what the answer is. How do they manage to do all the tuning up at Cambridge?

At the same time, I wish they had seats in the marquees at Cambridge!

We'll come again - even though it was a 2-hour 80+ mile journey.

I agree about Keith Donnelly. I always enjoy his contribution to festivals.

I think most folk festivals in this country offer artists "audience free" sound checks. It does mean a 2 - hour gap.

Sorry if I mislead you - there were only a few seats in the bar, though a great space and a huge selection of quality ales. Indeed they were in three alphabetical sections. Great!

But what had intended to be the kids tent and was given over to what seemed like an overspill concert had seats.

And Steamchicken seemed to be everywhere too!! Great band.

Agree 100% about Keith Donnelly and Flossie. One of the highlights was standing in the French Market in torrential rain, having just seen Keith getting ready to compere the outdoor concert in a totally deserted market square. The band were under a little gazebo, looking fed up, when Keith got on the microphone and announced, to no-one at all, that there was 'still some room down here at the front!' Irrepressible doesn't begin to cover it. Well done that man!
