01 Jun 09 - 02:42 PM (#2645750) Subject: Good news for a Monday! From: GUEST,Museum of British Folklore I received a letter in the post today regarding the museum project. A very kindly gentleman from a small village in the Grampian Mountains heard about the project from his daughter and told me that as he is quite elderly and eager to avoid death duties, would I accept a donation of £500 towards the museums research facility. The only stipulation was that I use the money to buy books. Not just books dealing with customs and traditions but books about folk music. He joked and said that if there was a bias in favour of Scottish folk music all the better. So with that in mind, would anyone care to start me off before I start to research what's out there. Are there any seminal texts I should invest in? His only request to me was that I make him a CD with as many recordings of 'Blooming Heather' on it as possible! Thinking caps on please! Thank you |

From: Jack Campin The full Greig-Duncan is an absolutely basic source which any institution purporting to represent British musical folk culture has GOT to have. But 672 pounds is taking the piss, there must be cheaper copies available. The 1984 thing can't be a reprint, the last volume of the collection wasn't published until a couple of years ago. What I would suggest to do with that 500 quid: hand the cheque to Folkiedave and ask him to supply interesting stuff up to the value. Reasonable prices and he'll know what you want better than you do. |

There's a library thread around here somewhere that might be worth perusing. I'll have a look at my collection in a bit and come back with some references. |
