Lyr Req: The Sky in the Pool (Williams, Dunhill)

Subject: I wish I could fly
From: GUEST,Fleabag

I have had enormous luck on here finding information about the bedtime songs handed down through my family, but theres one I'm really stuck on and I wondered if anyone could help out? It's a tune my Nan used to sing us to sleep with, and I remember her lyrics like this:

I wish I could fly
Way up to the sky
And bathe in its lovely blue
I am sure I should know
How my wings should go
But here from the beach
It's too far to reach,
The clouds..... that are floating by

But I've found a way
To be happy all day
And do what I like with the sun
I can see it here
In the water clear
I can keep it cool
In this little pool

It's nicer than flying so hi-gh
It's nicer than flying so high.

Nan said that she used to sing it at school when she was 8 or 9, I'd love to find out more about it.
Thanks!
Fi

Probably not the right one, but some of the same words are in This Song. (Scroll down a bit.)

I Wish I could fly right up to the Sky
But I Can't
You can
I Can't

I found this brief review in The Girl Reserve Movement: A Manual for Advisors. (New York: Y.W.C.A., 1918), page 563:

THE SKY IN A POOL
Words: Antonia R. Williams. Music: Thomas F. Dunhill
No. 57 in the Year Book Series.
A very pretty song for any little person who would "Like to fly up and down the sky and bathe in its lovely blue."

The British Library, and a few other libraries, have the sheet music, but it's catalogued as THE SKY IN THE POOL.

Hello there,
Years ago I was at school in the UK and this was the first song I learned. A song which I have always loved and still sing even in the shower ha !.   If you know Music, I'm going to write out the notes in A B C... in C major. If you don't know Music, get someone to decipher the letters, it's very easy. The tune is under each line.

I wish I could fly
C D   E F    G
Up and down the sky
E   G   AB   A   G
And bathe in its lovely blue
G    C+    G A    F ED C
I am sure I should know
D E F    E   F    D
How my wings would go
E    F G    FG   E
But here from the beach
E    A    G#   A    F#
It's too far to reach
C+   B    A   B   G
The clouds that are floating by
G    C+    G    A F    ED C

The C+ = an octave above middle C

I have been looking for the words of this song for ages, I was ten when I learned it and couldn't remember them all. But I remembered the tune, so I hope this helps you. Thanks for putting these words in the net, thanks for giving me the real name of this song too.

Great - my friend and myself who learnt this song in the school choir
60 years ago still sing it when we ring each other to identify ourselves.
I think the first line is actually 'I would like to fly', up and down the sky.

Well I have just come back on this site. I was able to buy the sheet music several months ago by chance from someone who was selling it online on Amazon. The music is written in E, starts in Minor then turns into Major.

E   F#    G A B   A B   C    D   B
I would like to fly up and down the sky
Up and down the sky

B    E⇡    B   C   A F# E
And bathe in its lovely blue

G   A    G   A    F# E    F# G    D⇣    E
I'm sure I would know how my wings would go

G    C   B   C B    A    F# D   E   D    G    E
But here on the beach it's too far to reach the clouds

B    C   A F#   E
THat are coming through

B⇣ E F# G# A B G# B C# D# C# B
So if I found a way to be happy all day

B    E⇡ B C# A   G#   F#   E
And do what I like with the sky

F# G# A A   F# G# A   B C# B
I can see it here in the water clear

G# E   C# C# F#   E   D# C# D# B
I can keep it cool in this little pool

B    E B   C#   A    G#   F# E
It's nicer than stretching so high

Thank you, oh thank you! My grandmother and Mother sang this song to me as a child and I couldn't find it anywhere (most unusual in this age of all answers immediately on the web!). I want to sing it to my daughter and now I can. So happy :)

We sang this song in competition and won a shield in Bath with the school choir, it was then Wesley school in Frome Somerset. BUT we sang different words.
I SHOULD LIKE TO FLY UP AND DOWN THE SKY AND BATHE IN ITS LOVELY BLUE.
I'M SURE I SHOULD KNOW HOW MY WINGS SHOULD GO BUT HERE FROM THE BEACH ITS TO FAR TO REACH THE CLOUDS THAT ARE COMING THROUGH.
SO I FOUND A WAY TO BE HAPPY ALL DAY ETC THE REST IS THE SAME.
WE ALSO SANG I WANT TO GO ABOARD MY SHIP AND SAIL AND SAIL AWAY. ETC.
Amazing I can still remember those songs and words after all this time and yet my friend from school who is still alive and well and sang it cannot remember a word. Brains can be amazing things, I am now 77 years young and still youthful and very active. Good UK genes.

Wonderful! I'm so happy to find my little song again. I sang it 60 years ago in an island schools competition in Port of Spain and was awarded a bronze medal!
Memorable. I still sing it. Imagine how so many more may have sung this song round the world....

Oh, I too am from Trinidad but learnt this song at the Convent of Notre Dame in Teignmouth Devon, when my sister and I arrived in the UK in 1953. I didn't know it was also sung in Port of Spain. I'm going to try and make a video of it and put it on Youtube, okay ? I play on keyboards so will accompany myself... Will come back on here to give the link.
