Looking for frailing tablature

I am wanting to learn some new frailing songs. Does anyone know of any books of frailing tabs? I am interested in Southern mountain songs if possible. Also if the book would have a recording with it, it would be great. Any Ideas

Fred

Ken Perlman's "Clawhammer Style Banjo" might be what you're looking for. I think there's a tape available for it; I know there's a two-video set in which he plays all the songs in the book, with transitions between the songs which make it easy to cue back to the beginning of the song you're working on. I can't remember what I paid for it, but it's well worth it. --seed

Well, I have a tab book -- a couple of Mudcatters are working from it now, so they can say whether it works or not -- but no recording. Contact me at

rjclayton@aol.com

if interested. It's cheap enough -- $6. ppd -- and has about 25 songs in it, most of 'em in fraililng style (the ones written for "up-picking" -- Pete Seeger style -- can be played in frailing style, too).

Bob Clayton

PS -- if anyone has recently ordered a book and hasn't gotten it, let me know. I responded to several e-mails, but had I think three snail-mail follow-ups. If I missed you, I need to know so. Thanks

I can vouch for the Clayton book - It's GREAT for both rank beginners and intermediates (I've had 2 different versions of it over the year and they were both great -different songs) If they are both still available I'd say get 'em both - they're an INCREDIBLE value. (I'd love to hear some of Bob's playing sometime....)

Fred ~~~ There is a rather nice sounding tune called "GILSAW" that a friend of mine worked out for clawhammer style banjo. It's not one of the more simple tunes, however its worth the effort once you get it worked out. You can find it at:

http://edcen.ehhs.cmich.edu/~dhavlena/gilsaw.htm

you have to scroll down through the fiddle tablature to get to the banjo section.

Have fun~~~~~
