Show of Hands on BBC Jeremy Vine

If I weren't 'they who must not be mentioned' 'nightmare fan' I would have probably told you that just this week, Jeremy Vine played Show of Hands 'Country Life' on his primetime BBC Radio 2 show, then discussed the lyrics of it, relating it to our dying villages and way of life in the country.

I would even have put the link in, and told you that you could listen to it for just 4 more days on the BBC 'Listen Again'

Together with, of course, putting a link into Country Life - Myspace

However.....I ain't a nightmare 'fan' so....er....I wouldn't ever do that...

And now, if you'll excuse moi, I'm just off to polish my photos of those Gorgeous Oysters and listen to their latest 'The Oxford Girl & Other Stories' CD which came just the day!

;-P

Oh, and by the way...I am *stunned* that the new 'fans' of Show of Hands, from over on fRoots, those who are saying over there how much Steve and Phil have risen in their estimation, have NOT mentioned this either on here or on the BBC.

I'd suggest they take an NVQ exam in supporting the music of those musicians for whom they have respect.

Thank oo

Songs of Issues of the day transmittted in the media of the day?

Sounds like mainstream BBC has taken a great step forward.

Didn't it happen with The World Turnd Up Side Down (Loen Rosselson's musical interpretation of Gerald Winstanley's words?), when a BBC Radio One DJ liked he song and boosted the career of Billy Bragg?

Far better than "Lost my Lorv in LA" type songs the mainstream normally churns out!

Point of pedantry: NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are not exam-based qualifications. They are portfolio-based.

I think that's the only sensible comment I can add to this discussion.

Cheers,

"Lizzie: I know this is asking too much but please engage brain before placing foot in mouth. This was posted on Friday 5th June"

Talking of foot'n'mouth, if you actually read that, it's about something completely different. CountryFILE, not CountryLIFE. It's got nothing to do with the Jeremy Vine show at all.

Thank oo

"Songs of Issues of the day transmittted in the media of the day?

Hmmmmm...well, perhaps. Shame they told me to STOP associating SoH songs and social issues though, on their F&A board. Apparently, me talking about song and social issues upset the (IMO) Apathetic Moaning Minnies. Still, now they've all become SoH fans, they won't be feeling that way any longer. :0)

"Point of pedantry: NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are not exam-based qualifications. They are portfolio-based."

Yup, I knows that. My ex works in NVQ thingummyjigs. Where would we be without NVQs eh? Maybe we'd be back in the Olden Days when folks just learnt their jobs the old-fashioned way, without having to study, be watched and assessed all the time. But hey, don't get me started on all that daft paraphanalia again...

Good to see that Sofi, Ian's right hand left hand, is on the ball about Countryfile though. Well done, Sofi! :0)

"CountryFILE, not CountryLIFE"

Country Life ON Country File, but a completely different programme to Jeremy Vine....

And...Country File is on right now....but I can't get my ***** TV to work since they twiddled and dwiddled with it. WHY have they spent a fortune mucking up TVs across the nation?   There's a song in there....maybe a dozen.

Life used to be so easy. Ha! I's gettin' old..

I'm reminded of when Kenneth Williams and colleagues got things into mainstream BBC because the authorities and the socially closeted 'moaning minnies' didn't understand what they were really saying.

If the authorities thought that SoH refered to the one that authorised a General Strike the band would probably have to change its name to get another broadcast!

I saw Country File. Ermm guess it is pointless to say you didn't miss much. But then, if you had seen for yourself, maybe some of the shine would have been rubbed off for you.

They seemed a bit self-congratulatory under the guise of self- deprication. Maybe we should all be grateful that they are travelling around and writing unremarkable music that is meant to reflect the way of life in villages and market towns? I don't know that they are doing the genre (whatever that may be and even they wouldn't define it) any favours.

Sorry Lizzie - I just cannot see the sparkle that you do.

Whatever you think of SoH songwriting abilties, surely the fact that a real issue concerning lots of people is being expressed through folk genre song is welcome, and bodes well for the future.

Perhaps TOFFITV should start a campaign against Digital TV switchover. Or is that a thread I've missed?

Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but they were also on Country File (last Sunday, BBC), performing "Country Life" - for what it's worth, I really like their lyrics, with my only criticism being that they themselves have Americanised a tad with their acoustic mix.

It's called 'frustration' at having had 5 years of snotty little journalists, such as yourself, following me around, trying to get me to stop writing about the music that I love, in the way that I love...

It's about 5 years of having to have put up with the most appalling things being said about me, to me, having had people discussing me as if I'm an idiot.

Well, you condescending parrot, I've had about enough of you...and as for your "one quick google will tell you who I am" routine, I've no interest in your trumped up self-importance.

I don't give a flying duck WHO you are, for I was raised by a man who taught me that I am better than no man and no man is better than I...so stick that in your stuck up little attitude and go away and write some snotty article for your snotty paper.

Before this thread goes to bed (shame - some points here are worth developing....)

Rifleman - on comment from you:

"Your anti anything if it's not English is REALLY beginning to get up my nose"
comment on earlier posting from Walkabouts Verse: -

"my only criticism being that they themselves have Americanised a tad with their acoustic mix."......... hope this isn't too convoluted!!

A bit OTT I think. Walkabout's view was politely expressed and a valid comment as I understand.

I'm not really familiar with Show of Hands but Paul Downes dropped in to our Brighton Sunday singaround sometimes a few years back and sung songs I understand were written by Steve Knightley.

If the song he sung about English people rejecting (too strong a word?) their culture was from SK. then - a bit ironic if SoH are victims of the very phenomenon.

There seems to be a weak mindedness amongst a lot of English singers right across popular music, that, if you open your mouth to sing you have to immediately adopt an American accent.

If you're an Elvis impersonator then it's understandable - but a folky style singer singing an own composition about London - that gets really pathetic!

An American observer was quite bemused.

There's a debate to be had about the cultural inferiority suffered by a lot of (the vast majority of?) English popular music singers. I'm not starting it but will happily contribute if someone else gets it going.

So it's official, per madlizziecornish @ 05.55. I'm "allowed" to call her names.

Clearly I have been insufficiently specific before. In common with an ever-growing catalogue of artists and activists including Phil Beer himself who have called on her publicly time and time again to cease and desist, I need her twisted brand of adulation like I need an extra orifice.

Yes, it's like a big dog (or flock of giant seagulls, more like), crapping all over the Sidmouth prom. Unavoidable and very unpleasant. Enthusiasm is one thing, and to be encouraged. Scattergun fawning and blinkered insistence that everyone else joins in or else is quite another. Nor does it stop with pre-pubescent fantasies about over-rated boy bands and popped-up R2 fodder but spreads to the propagation of reactionary middle-England twaddle against the entire education system, glorification of imperialistic militarism and anti-liberal outpourings.

Take Countryfile, a Sunday p.m. telly programme for the smug, middle-class, Daily Mail reading nuclear family (since an item on it forms part of this ridiculous thread). I watched the opening titles on a wonky cable feed, its transferral to the iPlayer being mercifully delayed. Over a shot of the razor-shy dishevelled ones looking considerably more so, plonked uncomfortably in an open field in a howling gale, John Craven unwittingly intoned (the vid and soundtrack being transmitted out of sync): "Down on the farm here are some sheep lining up for their annual haircut". He was never that funny on Newsround.

Good Morning, Sweetums,

May I suggest that you take on the redundant journalist above, for your acerbic newspaper. I'm thrilled to see you've finally been given a job reporting again, in the Borchester Echo, albeit in a fictional capacity.

Perhaps you could do an issue on the hardships being suffered right now, in the countryside around Borchester, by those living the country life, who have no jobs, no means of *reliable* transport into the bigger towns or cities to *get* jobs, no money to afford taxis, no hope of ever living in the rural communities where their families may have lived for generations. Could you also be sure to mention about the loneliness of the elderly, who no longer even have their Post Office or Village Shop to go into each day, to get their money, buy their food and generally be amongst people, which used to give them a sense of community, of life, of having people around them.

And then, perhaps you could interview musicians who are writing songs about said subject. You'll find some informationn which may be helpful on some of the links above.

:0)

Diane, for those of us who live and work in the country, rather than the city (in particular - there are plenty of country towns), Countryfile is one of the few programmes that actually relate to life as we live it - it has nothing to do with the Countryside Alliance. Many of us in the country find it at least as hard to relate to city life as city people do to the countryside - please allow us this small sop to our way of life while it lasts.

My esteemed organ reflects the activities of the agrobarons while the radio soap portrays the social comedy side of it. The pretend squire presenter of Countryfile was inflicting his cosy, one-dimensional platitudes on Britain's children via Newsround two decades ago, listening fodder perhaps more suited to the Rifleperson who is making far too much racket shooting innocent furry and feathered creatures to comprehend that my criticisms of:

(a) said fake neo-country dweller and
(b) the pointlessness of the Countrylife rant

constitute a fervent wish for a more realistic assessment of the iniquities of land ownership and use, the true blight on our countryside.

I live in the city now (thank deity) but originate from a tiny hamlet where the stone cottages had water pumps in the kitchens, ranges for cooking and bogs way down past the orchard. My ancestors had paid a feu to the Prince Bishops of Durham for the "privilege" of living there since the dissolution of the monasteries when they lost their lands.

As a conclusive footnote, John Craven was anong those who attempted to block my booking Billy Bragg for a Newsround mock election special, yet he picks the muddled confusion of Countrylife for last Sunday's transmission. This will, it is to be hoped, clarify absolutely the stance of this programme and its presenter.

I've just seen the Show of Hands feature on the repeat of Countryfile.

It's not going to geneate queues of new folkies at every club in the land - but it certainly did no harm - probably neutral with regard to getting folk to new audiences.

Perhaps some researcher might think more readily of folk style music for future documentary type programmes as a result.

No, I don't listen to The Archers, nor listen to or watch any other soap opera.

Are you sure, Diane, that it was John Craven's doing that SoH were included - is he the director/editor of Countryfile as well as a presenter?

I'm not going to get nasty, however much some people seem to enjoy it, but I do find it sad that so many of your postings seem to be extremely negative, and so few in any way positive.

I don't mind as long as they're backed up with a bit of arguement.

Bad form is to say "This is what I think. It's true coz I said it"
